The fertile 5% seized political power and began a systematized program of oppression against men, who were seen as having nearly exterminated the species. By the early 23rd century, natural childbirth was totally supplanted by laboratory birthing, and men were bred only as servants, entertainers, and breeding stock. The major concerns of the United Sisterhood Republic, one of the leading nations of the new world, were exterminating the renegade bands of roving free men and preventing incursions from foreign nations and powers. Thundra was born in the Central Birthing Center of Greater Milago (Milwaukee-Chicago), a government-run laboratory where fetuses are brought to term in artificial wombs. Genetically engineered for strength and endurance, Thundra was sent to military school when she was eight years old. By the age of eighteen, she had distinguished herself as the finest warrior in the Midwestern Republic and became an officer in the militia. She led assaults against roving bands of renegades and the armies of the Central American Empire. In the middle of Thundra's military career, the USR faced an invasion from soldiers from another alternate timeline, a world known as Machus. Men from this alternate Earth hadmanaged to overthrow their female oppressors generations previously, and used their technology for inter-dimensional travel to journey to Thundra's Earth to liberate the men of that world. In an attempt to strike back at the men of Machus, Thundra stole their dimensional apparatus, planning to launch a counter-attack on their world. The machine malfunctioned, however, and displaced her through time as well as space. She arrived in the twentieth century, and after acclimating herself, decided to humble the strongest man on Earth, thereby, she believed, preventing the world of Machus from ever coming about. Upon her arrival, she was befriended by the criminal Wizard of the Frightful Four, whose instruments detected Thundra's time displacement. The Wizard was looking for a replacement for Medusa, and saw Thundra as an ideal choice. Thundra pretended to go along with the Wizard's plans in order to exploit his resources. She determined that the Thing of the Fantastic Four would be the ideal object lesson to vanquish in battle. Alongside the Frightful Four, she engaged the Thing in a battle, besting him fairly on at least one occasion. Recognizing that her actions in the past would have little bearing on the future, she betrayed the Frightful Four to become an ally of the Fantastic Four. At this point .... a divergance. Stranded in the mainstream Marvel Earth, Thundra found that her power and skills made her something of a rolemodel for disaffected young women. She became a costumed adventurer, or superhero, and fought crime along side the likes of the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the Thunderbolts, and even the Great Lakes Avengers at one point or another. Three years after her arrival, fully acclimated to her new surroundings, she was approached by a man about joining a newly forming team. The team turned out to be dubbed the New Champions, and their base of operations in Seattle made them one of the few superteams on the west coast. Leary of leaving New York, the city she had grown most comfortable in, she was intrigued by the offer. She made her way to Seattle and attended the first meeting. After seeing the roster, she regretted her decision. His illness and time as a superhero aged him but since he's regained his health and his powers he seems to be younger and more energetic than ever. He wears his hair short and dresses in tailored suits when not in the lab or in his superhero costume. His current costume is basically his blue and white Giant Man costume. See illostration. </td></tr><tr valign="top"><td colspan=2>Personality: Bill Foster is a man who has played the roll of superhero in the past. First as the poorly named Black Goliath, and then as the second Giant Man, he never felt confident in his abilities. That and the health problems that he encountered as a result of his heroic career lead him to hang up the tights on several occasions, becoming Giant Man only when directly threatened. Since his cure from the cellular degeneration that was caused by his use of Pym Particles to grow he had kept to science and left the heroing to others. Although he wouldn't admit it, even to himself, Foster missed being a hero. He kept the Giant Man uniform and his nanite research had the "side effect" of allowing him to once again grow to gigantic proportions. When he got the email he was secretly thrilled. Though he complains about his "retirement" and his health concerns, Giant Man is back where he wants to be. </td></tr><tr valign="top"><td colspan=2>Quote:"Don't even think about it." </td></tr><tr valign="top"><td colspan=2>Background: William Foster spent his childhood in the Watts ghetto. His natural intelligence and the influence of several good people helped him leave the ghetto and attend California Technical Institute. There Foster worked to ward a degree in biochemistry and met and married Claire Temple, a medical student. Upon graduation, he worked his way up the corporate ladder at Stark Industries, but his drive for success strained their marriage to the point of divorce. When Harry Pym was trapped at a minimum of ten feet in height, Tony Stark recommended that Foster assist Pym in finding a cure. For several months they worked together in Pym’s laboratory in New Jersey, and eventually found a cure. Foster re turned to Stark Industries, where he was promoted to head of the bio chemistry division at Stark Indus tries’ Los Angeles plant. Fascinated by Pym’s research, Foster synthesized the growth compound, hoping to eliminate side effects. Eventually Foster tested the formula on himself and found he had successfully duplicated Pym’s growth powers. Taking a vacation from his duties at Stark Industries, Foster devised a plan by which he might win back the affection of his ex-wife, Claire Temple. He wrote her about how he had worked with Pym and duplicated his powers, but deceived her into believing that, like Pym, he was also trapped at giant stature. She agreed to meet him to see what help she could provide. They met at a travel ling circus where he said he had to work in order to earn money to continue his research. Foster had outfitted himself in a costume and billed himself as “Black Goliath.” Temple’s current boyfriend, Luke Cage (see Power Man), had followed her, and the two men fought over her. They settled their differences long enough to join forces against the Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime (see Ringmaster) but Temple chose to remain with Cage rather than her ex-husband. Ashamed, Foster returned to Los Angeles. Although he had fashioned a costumed identity for himself, Foster was uncertain whether he should use it to fight crime, considering the circumstances in which he fashioned it. With the encouragement of Henry Pym, he decided to try. On his first outing, Black Goliath encountered the criminal Atom-Smasher, who bombarded him with deadly radiation. This bombardment immediately produced painful side effects, making his size transformations difficult and causing him to occasionally black out. Before Black Goliath was able to defeat the Atom-Smasher, his foe was killed by a mysterious assassin that later turned out to be Atom-Smasher’s brother, the second Atom-Smasher! Ignoring the symptoms of radiation poisoning, he continued his career, battling such menaces as Vulcan, the Stilt-Man, and the Hijacker, and aiding the Champions of Los Angeles and the Thing. When it became difficult to ignore his illness, Foster took a leave of absence from Stark International to become a consultant at Project Pegasus, an upstate New York energy research installation facility. There to do research on the corpse of the Atom-Smasher, he nearly sacrificed his life to stop the mad scheme of the Nth Man. Following the attack, a team of top radiologists were assigned to help cure his condition, including Reed Richards and Walter Langkowski. After their treatments failed, Foster returned to Los Angeles to finish his life’s work with Stark Industries, only to be attacked by the new Atom-Smasher. He, the Thing, and the Original Spider-Woman defeated him. Spider-Woman saved his life with a transfusion of her blood, at the expense of losing her immunity factor permanently. However, Foster’s cell structure had deteriorated to a point that he could never become Giant-Man again. He retired, and became a full time researcher. Eventually, Foster found himself working as technician for the High Evolutionary at his Antarctic stronghold. Learning the High Evolutionary’s plan to mutate everyone on earth, he managed to release a warning to the West Coast Avengers, who tracked him to the stronghold. But as the avengers were being defeated, Foster swallowed a chemical that again transformed him into Giant-Man, and he learned that his cellular disintegration had been cured. He then defeated the High Evolutionary in combat. He realizes that he rates behind Thundra in the pure brawn catagory, and that she's a much better fighter than him. To this end, he tends to play back up to his fellow Champions. If their opponents are agent teams or have agent back up, he takes the cannon fodder first and then works as tag-team partner/decoy for his team. He realizes that his durability, much higher now than it was in it's earlier days, still doesn't match up to the likes of Thor or the Thing, so he avoids working as a shield unless thre's no other choice.</td></tr><tr valign="top"><td colspan=2>Campaign Use: Once there was a Giant Drought in Marvel Comics. There were two giant characters, both villains (Tower and Goliath III). Now, Pym is back in the saddle (or is he gone again), Goliath took the name Atlas and turned the other cheek, becoming a Hero. Jan Van Dyne has done some growing of her own recently, as well. Giant Man is my favorite for the role. He's smart, rational, a good technology guy (not a gadget, but he knows medical tech and other such things quite well. He works well for the team as a level headed veteran and someone who still has an inclination as to how goofy superheroing can be. </td></tr></table>

A brilliant biochemist in the employ of Avengers benefactor Tony Stark, Foster was assigned to work with Avengers member Hank Pym on a cure for the latter's gigantic stature (Pym had been temporarily trapped at an abnormally large physical size). They eventually succeeded in this, but Foster stayed on as Pym's research partner and Avengers Mansion's resident scientist. Foster eventually left this position during one of Pym's leaves of absence from the team, and later used a facsimile of Pym's growth serum to become the super-hero Black Goliath. Still later, he assumed one of Pym's old aliases as the new Giant-Man, though he was eventually forced to retire from adventuring when health problems curtailed his size-changing power (he briefly regained his powers for a time with the aid of the Avengers, but recently lost his powers again). Good writeups, but I thought the STR was a bit high on both. I'd peg Thundra at about STR 60(since Marvel states she can lift around 60 tons..so it's convenient). Giant Man is listed as lifting about 5 tons...so I'd drop him to STR 40 and give him HtH attack if you need his damage higher. That's just my opinion though. Given how Marvel retcons every month, this may have changed by now.
