    Question Custom Characteristic Issue

Below I have an Example of the Custom Characteristic I have placed in a Template that extends "builtIn.Main.hdt"

    <CUSTOM1 DISPLAY="New Stat" BASE="5" LVLCOST="1" LVLVAL="2" MINVAL="-999" MAXVAL="999" POSITION="9" VISIBLE="Yes" USESEND="Yes" APPEREND="5" NCM="20" NCM40="20" NCM60="20" NCM10="16" NCM10NICE="16">

<DEFINITION>(GameMaster's Hero System Rule Book, page TBD).</DEFINITION>

    </CUSTOM1>

I believe I am doing something wrong because when I go to select this new stat under powers and then go to select modifiers for this New Stat my selection of Advantages are reduced to the following:

    Advantages Listed:

    Delayed Effect
    Difficult to Dispel
    Invisible Power Effects
    Ranged
    Time Delay
    Trigger
    Uncontrolled
    Usable On Others
    Variable Advantage
    Variable Special Effects

I do not seem to have the ability to select Reduced Endurance or others (that might be relevant). The Reason (under "View Reason" on the Advantages that are unavailable) mentions that "New Stat" does not Cost Endurance. I figure I have done something wrong in the format of the Custom1 Characteristic shown above, because I thought I had indicated that the New Stat did cost Endurance. Or did I?

Any Direction would greatly be appreciated.

Another question that just came to mind.

Is it currently possible to customize which Modifiers apply to a Custom Characteristic, based on how modifiers are handled with the Current Hero System Characteristics?

I am under the impression that due to the Custom Nature of the Custom Characteristic that it my not be possible. Since the Custom Characteristic could encompass just about anything and how do you apply rules to something that isn't defined in Official Hero System products.

    Thanks in Advance.

    Re: Custom Characteristic Issue

Post the template file that you are using.

As for the second question, you can include an explicit list of Modifiers to include under the definition of the custom characterisitc (effectively overriding the normal definition of the Modifiers). You can also include a list of Modifiers to exclude within the definition of the custom characteristic.

You'll see examples of this in the main template.

    Re: Custom Characteristic Issue

    Also worth noting:

If you have a level-based ability (such as this custom characteristic) which is set to cost END, but don't purchase any levels in it, the end cost is 0.

If you go to the Powers tab and select your custom characteristic and just click on the Add Modifiers button, you won't see Reduced END on the available list because the ability (as defined) does not require any END to use.

Similar to purchase +0 STR -- there is no END expenditure.

Either purchase some levels in the characteristic or check off the "Apply Modifiers to base Characteristic" option (assuming that the base characteristic has levels in it) before assigning Modifiers.

    Re: Custom Characteristic Issue

    Wow...

That is awesome. I had completely forgotten about the "Apply Modifiers to base Characteristic" option. That was my issue.

I was attempting to apply the "Reduced Endurance" Modifier to the Custom Characteristic so I could modify the Endurance Usage for the Character that had this "New Stat" already purchased under Characteristics.

Since I hadn't indicated that this "New Stat" purchased as a power was to "Apply Modifiers to base Characteristic" it didn't allow me to select the "Reduced Endurance" Modifier. I hadn't indicated any levels in the Stat (purchased under powers), just as you pointed out.

    Thanks for the course correction.

I'll take a look at the "Main.hdt" for examples of Modifiers that apply or do not apply for the Official Hero System Characteristics.

    Thanks again for the suggestion.
