    Spray: Flash + AVLD

New question about flash and FD
i want to build a "flash" attack that is an urticant spray (similar to pepper spray in FREd...)

this spray will work "at contact" with eye, not "through" eye; so FD like polarized lens (only cover eye bulb, not eye socket), anti-dazzle cyberoptic or inherent flash resistence but NOT against Glasses, IR Goggles and eye protection of some sort

    so:
can i build this "spray" as a Flash with AVLD (protection is a full restrictive coverage; +¾)? or i must build this as a NND (protection is a full restrictive coverage; +1) or a "normal" flash powerful enough to break through some standard resistence?

    Re: Spray: Flash + AVLD

If I'm understanding you correctly, I'd build it as Flash with a Limitation: Doesn't Work Through Solid Enclosed Eye Covering (-1/4, maybe even -1/2).

Thus, it works normally against a guy with no FD. If a guy has FD due to a protective inner eyelid (like Spock in that one episode), he is affected but can apply his FD. A guy with dark goggles enclosing the eye will be totally immune, as would a guy with a scuba mask or enclosing safety goggles. Note that these last two would be affected by a Flash that was just a bright light in the eyes, since the plain clear glass/plastic doesn't stop the light, only water/chemicals/particles.

It sounds like you're describing a Flash that wouldn't work in some cases where a normal Flash would. Therefore, it's a limitation.

In my opinion this would fall under the rules as listed in the first column, last paragraph of page 171 (FREd, not 5ER). An NND flash attack could be defined as having a defense of "protective eye covering" is about as common of a defense as Flash Defense is. In this case I'd call the NND a +1/2 Advantage, instead of the normal +1.

For those of you with 5ER the same rules can be found at the bottom of page 265.
Still playing/running 5ER in Oklahoma City.

I will second Edsil's opinion on using NND.

I would also like to add, that it is my opinion that Flash DEF, like Power DEF, should be given the appropriate Limitation if it has a weakness specific to a particular Special Effect, however. (Usually a -1/2 Limitation)

    Cheers.

Pepper Spray would probably be Sight Flash, NND +1/2 (Defense is Sealed Eye Covering or LS: Immunity to appropriate Chemical).

CS Gas would be Sight & Smell/Taste Flash, NND +1/2 (Defense is Smell/Taste Flash Defense, LS: Self Contained Breathing, or LS: Immunity to appropriate Chemical)

When exposed to CS Gas and I wasn't breathing there was a burning sensation, but I could see and function. The minute I breathed it was all over. The effects are definitely Flash Sight Group effects (i.e. blindness), but other ancillary effects as well.

I do agree with your premise that regular sight FD is useless. Smell/Taste FD might be applicable, but then you have to ask whether a gas mask provides immunity or whether it simply provides enough FD. My understanding is that it is more of an immunity, built with 1 continuing charge (6 hours, 1 day... I don't remember).

... plus a pretty good Fallout conversion as well.

    No... he cannot apply FD.
If he could apply FD, you were right: a Flash with limitation
but 'cause he cannot apply FD, i thought about AVLD (even if NND are more appropriate, as Edsel saying... i think i'll use NND (+½) then...)
