Flashback. Superman/Batman issue #3. Clark and Bruce are in Washington DC and get ambushed by a ton of super villains. The villians are acting a bit odd and are talking differently then noraml. While Supes is geting his *** handed to him by Nightshade's shadow magic, Batman deduces that it must be Gorilla Grodd using his mind control on all of the other villians. Superman comes to the same conclusion and tells Batman to "look... upward.. on top... of the... monument".
Sure enough, there is Gorilla Grodd perched atop the Washington monument. Bruce asks Clark how he did that, to which Clark replies that he had the same thought about the mind control and was using his super hearing to locate Grodd. He was listening for Grodd's uniguely gorilla heart beat, which sounds different then a normal human heart beat.
I happen to think that's a fairly neat trick. And since I have character with low level super hearing already, I think it might be something worth aspiring to in the future.
The problem is, I'm having trouble figuring out how exactly to construct that level of super hearing. I've already considered things like Detect Heartbeat or Clairaudience. But I'm kinda stuborn and want to figure out how do this via modifiers to the characters Hearing Group.
Here's what I'm thinking so far:
- Targeting to be able to locate Grodd by hearing alone.
- To be able to tell the difference between a human and a non human heart beat, the character needs at least full Discriminatory. Do you think Analyze would be required?
- The Washington Monument is just a little over 555 ft tall, which is about 170 m or 85 hexes. So if Clark was standing at the base of the Monument, I think we'd be looking at about +12 Telescopic for Hearing Group. However, Clark and Bruce were actually standing near the edge of the Reflecting Pool. Thus the wee little math geek in me needs to know this distace so that I can use my few remaining geometry skills to calcuale the length of C! (Sqare root of the sum of A squared + B squared, right?)
- We can all hear a heart beat once we stick our ear on somones chest or use a stethoscope. I'm not 100% sure what you would use to do that without physical contact, but I'm thinking Microscopic for Hearing Group is probbaly what I'm looking for. The question is, how much? x10? x100?
- Any thing else I'm missing hear?![]()
