Oh hey, I forgot the New Universe entirely. I was a huge Psi-Force fan once things got shifted around a bit and Boyd got featured more prominently. I keep meaning to write him up.Originally Posted by Lord Mhoram

"There's a DUDE. He's got the THING. You need to KILL HIM, you need to KILL THE DUDE WITH THE THING, and subsequently, TAKE THE THING!" - via Dave M.
HERO, the most recent incarnation of Dial H For Hero.
The Will Peyton Starman.
L.E.G.I.O.N.
Alien Legion
Suicide Squad
The Elementals
ROM and Micronauts (the original version) both, certainly, even though one was based on the most disappointing toy ever and the other on some of the best.
I really used to enjoy the old Marvel UK Captain Britain, back when he has the staff and his original outfit (so much better than the generic flag hero getup he wears now). The series was utterly bonkers, of course, and full of errors, but I don't read comics for pure literary merit and factual veracity.
While I could certainly pick some runs on titles with certain creators, I would rather go with title-concepts I miss:
- monthly team-up titles (like Brave & the Bold, Marvel Two-In-One, DC Comics Presents, Marvel Team-Up) set in the main universe continuity that doesn't have six part stories all the time just so they can be collected into trades
- a solid anthology title (like the old DC dollar comics or the relaunched Showcase book of the 90's) that has a couple different tales, with rotating line ups (some one parters, some two, some four perhaps)
Martin Maenza
the World of Maenza: Online - my gameworld homepage
Limiting myself to comics that are no more:
Power of Shazam
Starman - Wil Peyton version (Three votes! It's a landslide!)
Elementals - Willingham only
Most !mpact titles (Fly, Jaguar, Comet, Black Hood)
New Warriors by the original creative team
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." - Carl Sagan
In no particular order:
- StarMan (Jack Knight)
- Sandman (Wesley Dodds)
- Sandman (Dream, of the Endless)
- The (real) Legion of Super Heroes (pre-Crisis)
- All-Star Comics
- All-Star Squadron
- The Invaders (the real ones, stories set in WWI written by Roy Thomas, not that New Invaders nonsense Marvel recently started).
- New Gods (the first series, by Kirby. Heck, all of his DC work at that time was fun)

D'oh, I can't believe I forgot about Power of Shazam, I have nearly every issue of this series. Loved the painted covers.
"You know, I used to think it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn't it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe."
Marcus Cole, Ranger to Franklin, A Late Delivery from Avalon
My #1 has to be New Warriors, Fabian's run on it. When I was running Champions (4th) at the time, I made myself a WWFD bracelet to wear when I was GMming.
Firestorm, the original Ronnie-and-Martin combo with all the problems that caused, with the original set of nuclear powers. Not the one with Ron and the Russian, or the one with all three yet Firestorm had an independent personality, and definitely NOT the Fire Elemental version. Curse John Ostrander and his elemental fetish.
Wonder Man's own comic. It just ruled, plain and simple. Great writing, great art ... and they gave Wonder Man, who had typically been just an overstuffed can of beef in a costume, some major character development as well as some of the best lines I've ever read ... and the most amusing fight scene, as detailed next.
During Galactic Storm ... Captain Atlas has gotten the Negabands; he clangs them, and switches places with Rick Jones, who is being bodyguarded by Wonder Man. Atlas starts brawling with Wondy, but soon realizes that he can screw Wondy up by swapping places with Rick whenever Simon throws a punch ... he either has to stop or pulp Rick!
This continues for about ten pages (alternating with Starfox and Quasar, who were near Atlas when he found the bands), until Simon 'gets his timing' ... and times a haymaker to land just as Atlas appears (see, the Speed Chart DOES work!). Atlas goes down, and Simon looks at the reader and remarks ...
"Duck season."
"Of course it's a lost cause. That's why we're here."

Sandman! Good Catch.
I Soooo miss monthly Neil Gaiman.
I loved the one too. ROM was great.Originally Posted by Hermit

I vaguely remember this, and it seemed cool. Again, what did Marvel do to Jack Monroe?Originally Posted by Hermit
Wonder Man's book was surprisingly solid, considering the star. And you're right, excellent writing - that's why I stuck with it so long.Originally Posted by CrosshairCollie

My Top 5 Comics
1. Darkstar Ferrin Colos created by Michael Jan Friedman and Larry Stroman. - He wore an experimental "exo-mantle" from an alternate universe keyed to his cybernetic implants and attuned to his biological signature. It was powered by a "Black Hole". How this Darkstar fell to an energy parasite like the "Starbreaker" is beyond me. The Darkstars were an alternative to the Green Lantern Corps, The LEGION, and like groups.

2. Starman V - Will Payton created by Roger Stern and Tom Lyle. A 1980s DC Comics superhero, created by Roger Stern and Tom Lyle. Payton was struck by a bolt of energy from space which transformed him into a human shaped fusion reactor, and was empowered to fly, was superhumanly strong, could fire bolts of energy, and could change his appearance. He first appeared in Starman vol 1, #1 (1988), and seemingly died fighting the supervillain Eclipso. The 1990s Starman series (q.v.) revealed that his fate was different from previously believed.

ME TOO!! I totally forgot the New Universe. Those came out shortly after I finished reading the Wild Card series IIRC. I saw them as being in the same vein as the series. Collected them all for a while.Originally Posted by proditor

My wife bought the graphic novel series. They were a great read. And yes, she bought them for herself.Originally Posted by John Desmarais
