    Risk 2210 vs. Risk Godstorm

Okay, not an RPG but still game related. I recently played a game of the LOTR Risk game which was pretty good. I've seen the 2210 and Godstorm versions and may pick one of them up.

Anyone have experience with them? How are they overall? Replay value? Best number of players? Comments/criticisms?

They are both the same, basically.

Both are a max of 5 or 6 players and generally only last 5 turns. You have the same basic Territory Cards and then extra cards (Magic-Godstorm, Tatical-2210). The extra cards are based off of the Commander/Gods you have. 2210 has one more Commander then Godstorm has gods (5 to 4). Both have an alternate 'Game Board' (2210-Moon, Godstorm-Underworld), but 2210 is the closest to the actual Risk game, with the basic countries (Renamed) and the addition of Water Colonies. Godstorm is a more condensed version focusing on Europe, nothern Africa, western Asia (Eurasia/Asia Minor), and Atlantis. Cool thing with Godstorm, there is a card to Sink Atlantis, killing everything on it.

Overall, both are the same when it comes down to it. Or you can be like me and have both added to 2 sets of the original and a set of the 40th Anniversay Ed. Risk as well. For some reason, people think I like Risk enough to warrent them to buy me sets for Christmas. Better than socks I guess.

Risk 2210 is the best of the lot. IMO, if you must play RISK this is the one to play. The nuclear wasteland randomization really increases the replayability. the ocean and moon territories are nice. and the options with the various commanders and the cards are fun. (I've Played it about 6 times so far and look forward to playing it again)

    Risk Godstorm
is a close second, basicly being a mythic knock-off of 2210 that isn't quite as good as the underworld stuff seemed to make the game go on without making it any better. (only played it twice but I'd try it again)

LotR Risk is a waste of money as it doesn't really add anything but the thinnmest coat of LotR flavouring paint and a random game end that I found didn't add anything to the game. (only played it once but wouldn't bother unless someone else was already set on playing it)

Thanks to everyone for the input. I picked up Risk 2210 over the weekend. I like the fact that the game only lasts five turns and that it appears that all of the starting players could still be in the game at that time (both of which address two problems I have with regular Risk.)

I only played LotR Risk the one time. I think I would have liked it much better if I knew what cards were in the deck. It would have made a big difference in my strategy if I knew there was a card that could completely undermine what I was doing. (of course since I own 2210, that won't be happening again!!!)

Of course once you play alot of Risk (any version) it is a very slippery slope you are on. It is only a matter of time before you find yourself playing the Revised Axis & Allies or The War of the Ring.

From there you can get hooked on Carcassone, Puerto Rico, Power Grid..... Then you have a whole new hobby on top of RPGs.

The guy who bought LotR Risk also had been digging around in his house and had pulled out the old version of Axis & Allies. He's licking his lips to play.

My Tuesday night gaming session (which has been going on for over 15 years) alternates between RPGs, board games, card games, and whatever else kind of games someone wants to play. I consider "Gaming" all one hobby.

A classic. But if you have the means, pick up the new one. The rules rules are 90% the same, but the 10% that changed really improves the game (For example, Russia now actually has some choices to make and the British may actually get to do something in India). And they even made the toys better. Now each country has it's own custom pieces (British planes are actually Spitfires, German Tanks are actually Panzers, and everyone's infantry is dressed in the appropriate uniforms)

That would be cool, but I only have one crossover player. Most of my RPG group can't be bothered with endless wargames and most of my Boardgame group is getting their RPG fix elsewhere.

Of course the fact that half my Boardgame group works for Fantasy Flight gives the whole thing an unique vibe...
