The treatment of Canada in superhero comics has been facile at best: which is to be expected when you're dealing with what's principly a American medium for a primarily American audience. For CotN 5e, we're a little freer in developing a Canada that feels like Canada should in a superhero world - an aspect where the priginal CotN fell a little short for me- and we're going to do better.

And this, sir, is why it's my #1 book for 2007 Always been a big fan of Alpha Flight and would love to see Canada get its due for superheroes Sure, I may live in the US, but I only live an hour from Montreal ... not to mention that Mrs. Sketchpad is Canadian Can't wait to see it Scott!

The Fantasy Hero and Pulp Hero stuff looks cool and I am definitely interested to see Lucha Libre Hero since I know nothing of the genre and it sounds intriguing. But, I was a little disappointed that we aren't going to get Galactic Federation, The Primeval Era or The Atlantean Age. I am probably in the minority on wanting to see the Hero Timeline fully fleshed out (at least the non-historical periods). Oh well, 2008? At the same time, don't get me wrong. I am *very* thankful for Worlds of Empire and Tuala Morn. I can't wait to get my hands on those!!

Champions of the North is another of those titles, like Cyberhero, that really deserves a second go around by an author who can do the job right. I'm glad to see Scott on this one... I'm another old Alpha Flight fan, with a lot of Canadian friends, and the old CotN just didn't cut the mustard. A lot of not half bad ideas, but very low powered write-ups, and not a real great grasp of the rules. Made Canada look like a nation of milquetoasts. The Canadian Master Villian/ Dr. D analog packed, what? Around an 8d6AP EB?

I liked Borealis too, but IIRC, he made his debut long before the 4th ed Champions of the North came out, and while he was part of the overall scheme of Canadian superdom, the main "new" big bad from CotN was a powered armor Dr./Professor/Lord/(insert favorite Honorific here) type. Sinister, maybe? Or Dread? something like that.

I honestly can't remember Borealis having a writeup in CotN, but I'll freely admit to the possibility of suffering a mind blank. I do distinctly remember that the vast majority of the characters were severly underpowered and inefficiently written (not WRONG, like International Enemies, just very simple). Anytime you look at the main sactioned Superheros of a country and think "The Champions could eat these guys before breakfast", you're not saying good things about that country.
Canada deserves better, and I trust Scott to do a great job. And I'll bet he manages to avoid sterotypes in the process

For the record, Borealis was on pages 94-95 and totaled 824 points. His biggest attack was 16d6 EB at 0 END, and he had 38 PD/37 ED.

You might be thinking of Lord Dire, on pages 118-119. He totaled in at 400 points, had a 10d6 EB, and if his Force Field was up, a 24 PD/26 ED.

    Will buy: Pulp Resource Guide

Might buy (esp. if damaged or 1/2 priced): Enchanted Items, Danger Zones, Aarn: City Of Adventure, Post-Apocalyptic Hero, Lucha Libre Hero (probably not, but will want to learn more), Lands Of Mystery, Crews, Cops, And Cabals, Scourges Of The Galaxy (probably will)

Won't buy (except possibly damaged or 1/2 priced): Villains, Vandals, And Vermin, The Ultimate Energy Projector, Champions Of The North, Golden Age Hero, Silver Age Hero.
    Just Joe

I don't see that 'crunchy' and 'light-hearted' are diametrically opposed.

I played in the Lucha Libre Hero game this year.

It was a blast, everyone had a great time including Hero veterans and complete newbies alike. The entire environment is one which rewards cinematic (OK, as-cinematic-as-a-really-low-effects-budget-can-produce ) and over-the-top behaviour.

It was so crunchy you'd have to cut off a chunk to serve to guests with a diamond-bladed chisel. As a matter of fact, it was the most successfull 'full crunch' convention game in which I've ever played (It ran the entire time and nobody bailed.)

There are well over fifty movies simply starring El Santo, leaving out the legions of imitators. Many are available on DVD. Saying Lucha Hero will be a sourcebook about wrestling would be like saying Ninja Hero is a book about full-contact karate; it's not exactly untrue, but it leaves out volumes. Lucha is an action/adventure genre, unique and beautiful unto itself. dw

    Darren,
I was talking to my friend Nestor last night about DOJ's new products and mentioned Lucha Libre Hero. It so happens he's from Puerto Rico, and thus basically grew up on the stuff. He declared "It must be mine!" (once he stopped laughing) and noted that Lucha is (in his opinion) the closest one gets to live-action comics/superheroes in the world.

BTW -- you're not planning on running a Lucha Hero game at Gen Con, are you?

hay i love alpha flight but i didn't like the Sentinels.Captain Canuck, yes he is dated and not the best iconic character but he has his own stamp {think Alpha Flight got one two}. just thought that Jon mattson did a bit of a miss serves in his in his alpha only homage. as for you writing the new book I'm vary happy and looking forward to it. Jon mattson did a really nice job on the first book the Sentinels were little low powered but some of the builds were cool {Falcon's flight} and Borealis must be updated!! just added note of things i would love to see in the book in no particular order

    1 Camp X
    2 the Devils Brigade/ 1st special forces
    3 the Avro Arrow
4 Riel and the rebellion and don't forget Gabriel Dumont and Michael Dumas there post rebellion
    adventures are so often missed
5 Sitting Bulls entrance to BNA. NW MP Vs US Cavalry
6 Canadians in the US military and vicversa
    7 sleeping with the Elephant
8 Lend Lease and Canada's roll in bringing the US in to WW2

most of those could be side bars

One thing I noticed the other night, after I got home and looked over the printed-out list casually...

The schedule shows only one Ultimate book.

    I'd like to know why!

    Re: The 2007 Release Schedule

Does anyone have an updated 2006 schedule? The one on the website is probably out of date. Some of the items on it are moved to 2007 and some of the items are by Allen Thomas.

    Thank you!
