DAN - Using a new Character Template on an old character

    Dan,

Is it possible to get an old character to use a new character template without re-entering the character?

I have edited a couple of your sample character templates to better lineup with the WG, but I am hoping that I can force the characters I've already created to use the new templates.

Any chance? I got the official word from Steve today. He said the WG must be strictly adhered to so I'm in for a bunch of editing. Any help I can get would be vastly appreciated. Thanks!

Well I know I've switched to a different template before. You may have some minor issues, but IMHO you should be ok.

Not quite what I was asking. I am using the same template, but I edited it.
HOWEVER! You may have hit upon what I need to do! Thanks! I'm going to try renaming the template and then switching to it to see if it works! *fingers crossed*

    Crap! That's a no go...

Dan, is there something else that I may have to change to make this work?

hmm, if you edited the template and it has the same name it should work.(At least that's my understanding). Where is the file? did you put it in the jar file? I think it expects it there.

That's what I thought as well, but it didn't. The file is in the sample templates directory. Which is where I asssumed it should go, but I did manually pick it as well, and it didn't work. I've ran into another snag though. I can't seem to force things to combine or use the correct seperator between items. In other words, when you enter a language and want to display Literacy it has to be written like this: Language: Name (fluency; literate), but I can't make literate join inside the parens nor can I get the semi-colon to be used.

If you manually select the template through "Set Template -> Choose File" then the character will be using the new template. This may not have the effect that you're looking for, however, as the alias(es) will have already been set on the character's powers.

Agreed, I tested this and found this to be true, as when I select the skill in question I see the new formatting that I made, but than have to reselect everything.

So the question is, how do I make this work???

I'll except a "you can't" answer, but I would prefer an actual solution if you have one. I just need to know how limited HD's capabilities are so that I don't keep running circles around this issue. I'm looking for a prompt solution, so if that solution is do it by hand at least that's a solution .

Thanks as always Dan, I appreciate your time.

    You're pretty much SOL.....

I had to make a decision in coding as to how changing the template would work and, in most cases, you'd want it to work the way it currently is: Power definitions are simply transferred over to the new template. Any powers that don't exist under the new template are removed, any powers that do exist are taken over with their existing definition.

Yours is kind of an odd case....one of the few in which this is not desireable.

Not much that I can think of here to help....

Thanks Dan, I appreciate your time. Could I request this feature or something like it for version two or three?

Not really, since it would hose the majority of the folks out there. Most people want it the way it is....yours is just an odd case.

Hmmm... ok. I'll be curious to hear how other people will deal with the WG. Assuming that they think HD is as great as I do and want to use it for such.

I think honestly HD is truly remarkable and it's only short coming I've encountered has been it ability to export per the WG easily. By that I mean without all the tweaking that has to be done. The WG templates that were created got me close, but then I have to edit 75% of the lines to bring it into the guidelines.

For my part, I'm dealing with it by actually manually modifying the documents. Admittedly, it's for my own use, so it's not like a chore... but.

I can put up with it, though, because HD does about 80% of the hard labor, and the tweaking is just bearable.
