On Halloween, 2007, a small group of desperate people, drawn together from diverse backgrounds, fought the final battle to save the world from a greatest occult threat ever conceived: an occult ritual decades in planning and years in development intended to free a monstrously powerful entity into our world. the last stages played before the eyes of an unknowing world, acted out as part of so called “dare shows” they their contestants to isolated locales and had them perform bizarre stunts; each one another step in a vastly complicated ritual that slowly weakened the barriers between our reality and realms of unrelenting horror. A ritual that had to be witnessed and accepted by millions of humans to succeed and it was, every night on prime time across most of the free world. Secrecy was of utmost importance, but such a vast conspiracy could never be completely hidden. Mistakes were made, pieces of the puzzle leaked and a small group of became aware of the plot and struggled to stop it with all their courage and conviction.
They failed.
The entity, a monstrously alien and indescribable thing broke free of its ancient binding, tearing its way into our reality, its struggled unleashing untold destruction across the globe. Fire, flood, storm and earthquake ravaged the planet as the Nameless thing pushed it way into our world, violating never meant to hold in some unimaginable cosmic rape. Hundreds of thousand went mad as it psychic roar torn threw the collective minds of the human race and shredded the psyches of the more sensitive. The last surviving members of the group made a final desperate attempt, surrendering their lives to close the wound in reality the creature was seeping threw. The gate slammed shut, trapping the beast between worlds, in a space that no space at all. It raged and struggled against its fate, sending ripple of fractured space rolling across the world, warping the laws of the universe even as it was pulled, screaming into nothingness. Portals opened, spilling the demonic hordes of dozens of Hells into the world, creatures long thought legend walked once more and face of the Earth was changed forever, but at least there was an Earth left.
100 years later.
The Earth is a scarred tableau of demon infested ruined cities, wilderness, twisted regions where two or more realities have melted together, demon cities and monuments to their power. Hordes of demons run rampant, raping, feasting and pillaging and preying the hapless humans that still cling to a meager existence, largely stripped of their technological protection, in a world that is no longer there’s. The laws of nature, once thought inviolate have become fluid, able to be changed by will and emotion, in short magic flourishes once more. But that is a cold comfort for the survivors since the knowledge to take advantage of such powers had been large forgotten or tainted with myth and superstition and relearning it will be a long struggle. A few cling to the hope of rebuilding the old world and search out artifacts of the time and try to fight against the demons and alien beasts, to destroy their cities and rape camps. But hope seems fleeting, that is until recently. Rumors have started to form, rumors of a way to drive the infernal things back, to return to the Earth to sovereign hand of Mankind once again and of a group of heroes that just might have a chance to do it.

The game will set, at least initially in what used to be known as Japan, but is collectively known now as the "Broken Lands" during the massive upheaval cause by the Awakening a century ago, volcanoes and fault lines all across the globe went off. Land masses broke up, some sank and some cases new land rose from the depths of the sea, some of it dotted with strange and inhuman ruins and artifacts. Few would recognize the Japanese islands now as they have nearly tripled in area, a strong of islands ranging from a few square miles to hundreds. The human population is surprisingly high since there is much room to hide and the demons over cluster around the alien ruins revealed when the new land rose from the depths of the ocean.

The campaign is actually based on the aftermath of an earlier occult investigation campaign that went... badly at the end.
