    D-20 Gamma WOrld :(

I picked up the players handbook and one of the supplements really cheap.

    I feel let down.

No Torc Grenades, No Black Ray guns, Most of the fun mutations seem to be missing.

Yeah, I flipped through the main book for this in a bookstore a while back. I was shocked (shocked, I tell you!) to see that it looked like they had gone the hard-sf route and explained everything! What's the point of a weird, post-apocalyptic world full of bizarre mutants, intelligent animals, and absurdly high tech if it all makes sense? Is there no love left in the world for wide-open craziness?

Yeah. I was all excited about this, then the developers started talking about what they were doing with it on RPGnet, and then as the books came out the comments started rolling in. It was the first Gamma world I didn't get.

It was done by white wolf, so they made it darker/more realistic and got rid of the camp that made Gamma world so great. That and the rules sucks- the main book only had something like 12 mutations in it (but lots of space for community building/interacting rules) - some of the monsters had mutations that weren't listed in the book - and no real rules on how to use them. When one of the writers was asked about the lack of mutations, he said "look at the monsters they have some more".,

Plus the usually WW level of bad editing, 3 chapters in the main book with three distinct page layouts (so you never know where the page number is) and in one case grey print on dark grey background. Ick Ick Ick.

If someone gave me all the books I would feel like I paid to much for them.
Poor attitude, poor design, poor execution.
You know how you play with a cat by dangling a peice of sting within his grasp, and then pull it away as he grabs for it? If the string isn't exciting and tempting the cat won't grab. But if you pull away early too many times and deny him too often, the cat gives up in frustration. The skill is in finding the sweet spot between those extremes where its fun for you and the cat.

    That's what a GM's job is.

I paid about $3 each, and felt ripped off.

A local bookstore also has the GW core rules for cheap ($8), as well as some GW supplements and some Ravenloft books. Glad to know that me picking up the RL book of five adventures instead of the core GW book was a good move.

(The only GW rules I've owned was the second edition, which were wonderfully campy).

This sounds like the most completely wrong direction to take the game.

Gamma World was always a science-fantasy game and its inherent goofiness was always part of its charm.

White Wolf clearly doesn't get Gamma World and/or they're just cranking this out for the money.

I got 'em for about 3 bucks each, myself. Primary for conversion fodder.

So write your own version in Hero and do it right.

Someone already posted a random mutation table for Hero.....it's on the boards somewhere still I'm sure.

I hope that isn't a "poor dual brain" on that Palindromedary!

What I'd like to get my hands on is an old Metamorphosis: Alpha to Omega

The game that inspired Gamma World.

    Re: D-20 Gamma WOrld :(

I have to agree that the new d20 Gamma World was a bit disappointing. I have all things Gamma World including Metamorphosis Alpha and the Alternity version (which I actually liked, though the tone is certainly different than earilier versions). I agree that the designers misjudged what the audience wanted and went more science-fiction instead of science-fantasy. Another problem that I had with it was, as much as I liked d20 Modern, they did poor job of extending it to suit Gamma World. I though Darwin's World 2ed did a much better job of extending the d20 Modern system, though I think DW's tone is more suitable to a Fallout game than Gamma World.

Although the d20 version was disappointing, there's still lots of good information there to mine, especially the GM's book. I'd recommend Darwin's World if you really want a d20 system to run a Gamma World game in and throw out DW's default setting, though the setting is pretty cool once you read it. Also, if you like HERO you can go that route and mine the d20 material for a conversion. I've flirted with conversions to HERO and have done some. Mostly putting together a conversion for the module "Famine in Far-Go." One of my favorite, fun modules from the 1st-2nd edition period. Plus I love the mutant chickens in there.

I also keep toying with the idea of getting some players together to play a traditional Gamma World game, no matter the system, but pull a switch on them and not let them know they're on the Space Ark Warden until they find out.

According to Wikipedia, the rights to Gamma World have reverted back to WoTC.

The Omega World that was in one of the Dragon/Polyhedron mags was very good though. And with the mutation rules in d20 future and with d20 Apoc. you can get a decent gammaworld feel from using d20 future (d20 Modern/Future is my second favorite game system behind HERO.)

Do you happen to have a link or no a good way to find it?
