For those of you who base their campaign on the East Coast you probably should know that the Pennsylvania Railroad was the largest. For the first four decades of the Twentieth Century carried 40% of the total U.S. freight traffic.
For those wanting some useful information (particularly passenger trains) on the railroad check out this site.

I am reminded that at least for a while, long long ago (~1970), you could get plans for railroad artillery pieces. They were offered in model railroad magazines (which we read for a while) for use by scratchbuilders. It's been years since I looked at those magazines, though.
... abnormal, non-Euclidean, and loathsomely redolent of spheres and dimensions apart from ours.
