MAGMA DEMON
Ecology: Magma demons aren't creatures from the infernal realms, but elemental beings summoned from where the domains of earth and fire meet. They are not commonly found in our world, and usually only brought over through the spells of powerful magicians. Once here however, magma demons tend to be loathe to leave, as they find our world wonderfully soft and flammable. About the only complaint these creatures have (if "complaint" is the right word), is that our world is often colder than they like and far too wet.Code:Val CHA Cost Roll Notes 45 STR 35 18- Lift 12.8 tons; 9d6 HTH Damage [9] 18 DEX 24 13- OCV: 6/DCV: 6 28 CON 36 15- 25 BODY 30 14- 15 INT 5 12- PER Roll 12- 15 EGO 10 12- ECV: 5 25 PRE 15 14- PRE Attack: 5d6 10 COM 0 11- 30 PD 3 Total: 30 PD (18 rPD) 30 ED 6 Total: 30 ED (18 rED) 4 SPD 12 Phases: 3, 6, 9, 12 15 REC 0 56 END 0 62 STUN 0 Total Characteristic Cost: 176 Movement: Running: 12"/24" Leaping: 4"/8" Swimming: 2"/4" Cost Powers & Skills 22 Body Of Super-Hot Stone: HKA 1d6-1, Inherent (+1/4), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Persistent (+1/2), Armor Piercing (+1/2), Damage Shield (Offensive; +3/4), Continuous (+1); Always On (-1/2), No STR Bonus (-1/2) 8 Ignite: RKA 1 point, Sticky (only affects flammables; +1/4), Penetrating (+1/2), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Uncontrolled (lasts until extinguished or until flammables burn themselves out; +1/2), Continuous (+1); No Range (-1/2), Only Works On Flammable Objects (-1/2), Linked (Body Of Super-Hot Stone; -1/2) 43 Body Of Stone: Armor (18 PD/18 ED); Visible (-1/4) 50 Body Of Stone: Physical Damage Reduction, Resistant, 50%; STUN Only (-1/2) plus Energy Damage Reduction, Resistant, 50% 10 Elemental Being Of Stone And Fire: Energy Damage Reduction, Resistant, 25%; Only Works Against Fire And Heat Attacks (-1/2) 10 Body Of Stone: Knockback Resistance -5" 12 Long Legs: Running +6" (12" total), END 1 11 Glowing Body: Sight Group Images Increased Size (2" radius; +1/4), +1 to PER Rolls, Inherent (+1/4), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Persistent (+1/2); Only To Create Light (-1), Always On (-1/2), No Range (-1/2) 48 Elemental Being Of Stone And Fire: LS (Eating: Character does not eat; Immunity All terrestrial poisons and chemical warfare agents; Immunity: All terrestrial diseases and biowarfare agents; Longevity: Immortal; Safe in High Pressure; Safe in High Radiation; Safe in Intense Heat; Safe in Low Pressure/Vacuum; Self-Contained Breathing; Sleeping: Character does not sleep) 4 Reach: Stretching 1", Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2); Always Direct (-1/4), No Noncombat Stretching (-1/4), No Velocity Damage (-1/4) Skills 10 +2 with HTH Combat 3 Climbing 13- 3 Demolitions 12- Notes: Defined as knowing how to tear things down. 3 Tactics 12- 2 WF: Common Melee Weapons 239 Total Powers & Skills Cost 415 Total Character Cost 75+ Disadvantages 5 Physical Limitation: Large (-2 DCV, +2 to PER Rolls) (Infrequently, Slightly Impairing) 5 Physical Limitation: Reduced Leap, can only leap half as far as STR indicates (Infrequently, Slightly Impairing) 10 Vulnerability: 2 x STUN cold-based attacks (Uncommon) 5 Vulnerability: 1 1/2 x BODY cold-based attacks (Uncommon) 5 Vulnerability: 1 1/2 x STUN water-based attacks (Uncommon) 310 Experience 415 Total Disadvantage Points
Personality/Motivation: For the most part, magma demons seem to be driven by a strong desire to destroy, especially artificial structures. This isn't due so much to magma demons being "evil" per se (although they are most assuredly malevolent), but due to being the product of earth and fire, and thus two of the forces that cause the most wild-scale changes in the world. Much like a volcano, a magma demon is full of pent-up energy and when set free on this world they are able to release that energy in a virtual orgy of destruction, reshaping the world as they see fit.
This desire to destroy (or at least, reshape) their environment may explain why most magma demons don't demand any sort of payment for their services beyond the freedom to act as they see fit. Of course, considering their environment, it's hard to determine just what might be considered suitable payment for such a being anyway.
Powers/Tactics: Counting on their size, strength, and resistance to hard to see them through most any attack, magma demons tend to ignore subtlety and head right for the center of the opponent's forces. Their glowing body is usually hot enough to destroy most weapons striking it (unless magically treated or otherwise resistant to intense heat), while their great size allows them to use similarly-sized weapons, such as huge sword, axes, or maces. Magma demons will also go out of their way to assault structures, such as towers, castles, cathedrals, and the like, looking to cause as much damage as possible in the hopes of collapsing the building (as well as setting it on fire).
Appearance: Standing at least 12 feet in height, magma demons have a humanoid body formed of superheated stone. Their bodies glow yellow with internal heat, cooling to red or even black on larger muscle masses. Although they have little use (or need) for most armor or other adornment, magma demons will still strap on some scattered bits of harness -- usually greaves, vambraces, pauldrons, gorget, and an ornate helm/crest.
Designer's Notes: This character sheet represents a typical competent magma demon the PCs might encounter in a situation where you need a character sheet (i.e., combat or the like). You can easily customize this character sheet by applying one of the templates found on pages 116-118 of Monsters, Minions, and Marauders, such as Chieftain or Fighter. You can also make the magma demon larger by using the size templates from The Hero System Bestiary. The largest magma demons should stand about 30' in height. You can also give the magma demons spells or spell-like powers, typically ones dealing with the earth, heat, or fire.
Building the magma demon was fairly easy. In fact, I find it the perfect example of how I can use published HERO System products do my work for me. For starters, once I know how tall I wanted the demon to be, all I had to do was look at the giants in Monsters, Minions, and Marauders to get an idea of the base stats. I then used The Ultimate Brick to develop a suite of powers for the body of stone, while the fire elemental, found in The Hero System Bestiary gave me various heat-related powers. All I needed to do then was plug everything into HERO Designer (and make a few value adjustments as I went).
The magma demon is based off of a picture I found posted on the image hosting site 4chan. I have no idea what the miniature is of, or who made it. The only clue I have is the term "Magma Exalted" but I'm not sure what game that's used with (aside from the game Exalted). It might be from Warhammer 40,000 or Warhammer Fantasy.
