Mental Absorption

Here is a concept that reciently came up for a character in my campaign and I was wondering what the official word on it is. I could not find anything about it in the FAQ.

A character wishes to have his mentalist character able to absorb the mental energies that are directed at him and use that to boost his mental powers. I was thinking about using the absorption power but saying that it works against mental defense instead of the usual PD/ED. Is this legal? If it is not, may I get suggestions that would work.

This is specifically stated as legal "with the GM's permission" in the Ultimate Mentalist, page 72.
