What setting/system combination do you think is a very good mix?
My vote goes for d6 Star Wars, even with the small blaster-proof Wookie problem![]()

Okay NOW I can get it right...
Terran Empire with HERO system
Thanks
I would also nominate the FASERIP stuff for Marvel Superheroes given that the goal was a rootbeer and pretzels kind of game. Pretty friendly for newcomers, even if you had to wonder how the #$#$ your 'Excellent' guy was going to hang with the 'Shift X' guy![]()

I'd second that D6 Starwars. I'd also add Paranoia, Dogs in the Vineyard, Universalis (although technically settingless - it is the ideal system for creating a setting collaboratively), My Life with Master, Castle Falkenstein, Amber, Harn, Serenity, Hackmaster (for parody reasons only), Hunter Planet (for comedy silliness), Project A-Ko, SLA Industries, Toon, Unhallowed Metropolis
The white Rules Cyclopedia version of Dungeons and Dragons. Fairly simple and clearly defined, with a world that meshes very well with the improbabilities and restrictions of the system, turning what could be weaknesses for a more realistic setting into strengths. And fans of HERO would probably appreciate having all the core rules in one volume.

I third D6 Star Wars. So great. I'll add Cyberpunk, just cause I enjoy the setting and we always have a lot of fun with the rules (imperfect though they may be). Also a pretty high success for me would be the Conan RPG that came out a few years ago. Yeah, it's D20, but damn they did a good job.
Altandara Fantasy Hero Campaign (Home Brew Campaign world). Borrowed aspects or Jordan's The Wheel of Time series. Channelers who weaved spells out of the natural energies of the world (no components, etc). Sub-Channelers, Blademasters who could weave a bit of the energy to enhance their swords and Swordplay, Spirit Archers who could do the same but with Bows. The Races were divers...Draconians (hey it's great fun playing a 7 foot Bi-Pedal Lizard/Dragon creature), Felines, Wolfen, Ogiers. We even had a detail map of the world with visual secrets that tooks us a few sessions to find (different tree types in the four forests of the land..ie a willow amongst pines...that acted as teleport gates but you need the right key). My friend has run a few Con games at ConQuest in this world...Giants v Dragons anyone.....The Goblin Game (I especially loved that game....we got to play a part of Goblins....I was Rol the Strong...18 str but 5 INT......)
Kevin's Star Hero Campaign: An ever changing campaign world that's about 15 years or so old. Complete with what I like to call "Improved" Jedis...Clansmen. Androids, cyborgs, Space Marines (my namesake Boomer is one), Lensmen and Espers. Races are Bird creatues (bi-pedal w/wings on the bottoms of their arms), standard "Grey" aliens, Bugs......The Clansmen are split into individual Clans w/differing purposes. Boomer's Father is in the "slice first ask questions later" clan while Boomer ended up in the Techie Clan (hey the guy is a Demo Expert and top notch Hacker/Programmer). Great background/history that sometimes comes back to haunt the current Team.
L5R....d10 version (2 ed I believe). We started off with a Samurai training contest and then as a result of said contest we were given a great Mission by the Emerald Champion himself. Played a Lion Samurai in that one.
Shadowrun.....Any Shadowrun game GM'ed by Matt Reeve is absolute theater. He's run many a great Con Shadowrum game....you may know him as the "Diorama" guy......we did a run on a sub Building of Saeder Krup.....the end prop was a 3 story skyscraper complete with cubicles and working elevator....the top floor was Loffwyr's "control" room. Played a Cockney speaking Fomori Troll (furry Troll) w/a big Assault Rifle named Sarge.
You've no where to hide, no where to run. Your village will burn like the heart of the sun......
I was always particularly fond of Chill, from Pacesetter, and Bureau 13 Stalking the Night Fantastic. Both were easy systems to learn and had an interesting history, and heck how can you go wrong with using the modern world as your campaign world.

Ars Magica: Definitely esoteric and not terribly "clean" from a mechanical standpoint, but the mechanics matched the setting and vice versa.
Warhammer Fantasy RPG: the weirdness of the rules complemented the setting and intended "feel"
Marvel Superheroes Role Playing Game -- Advanced: The classic FASERIP system. Unbalanced, but fun and fast
Gamma World: the classic TSR version -- similar to MSH above, this game was crazy pure fun; the mechanics were definitely flawed, but no one cared.
A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked.

I was fond of old-school Deadlands. Really interesting setting, really cool mechanics. In the hands of the right GM, it was a helluva game.
I also liked the Marvel FASERIP system. It had enormous flaws, but it was a really good beer-and-pretzels game that was a lot of fun to play.
d6 Star Wars. Good system that really captured the feel of the original trilogy and the Expanded Universe.
I also forgot FASA's Star Trek. That was great!
