    HexMapper

I just wanted people to know that I've written a pretty good hex-based mapping application. It's in Java 1.5, and I've got a minimalist website for ot here.

Take a look, use it if you like it, and let me know what you think.

Okay, I'm no longer the Alpha Geek I once was. How do I get it torun. My computer doesn't know what to do with a .class file extension, and neither do I.

Class file? Did you open up the jar file? You don't have to do that. For Mac OS X, download the disk image and get the executable out of that. For any other OS, download the jar file, and simply double click it.

There is no .jar file. There are several folders and .class files.

    Re: HexMapper

Okay, this really confused me for awhile. Evidently Internet Explorer (at least on on Windows XP) unjars jar files when you download them. I've added a zipped jar to the download page that will hopefully work around this.

For programming geeks unfamiliar with Java, a jar file is basically a library of code that is possibly executable. It is created using the same mechanism as the Unix "tar" utility, which is similar to zip. So, Internet Explorer is treating the jar file as a tar file and automatically uncompacting it, which makes the jar file unusable. Ugh.

I'm still vexed. Downloading the zipped .jar file still results in a .jar file my (XP-equipped) computer insists needs to be extracted, creating folders and .class files.

Stupid question, but do you have Java (java.sun.com) installed on your system with Jar files associated to be opened by it?

    Re: HexMapper

I downloaded it with Firefox. The executable .jar file seems to work fine and the application runs well on my machine. Now I just have to find time to play with it some.
Still playing/running 5ER in Oklahoma City.

Near as I can tell, working indirectly through friends machines, this seems to be a problem only with IE on XP. Try a different browser while I research this issue.

    Re: HexMapper

The problem seems to be that Windows XP associates a jar file that has been downloaded with Explorer with the Compressed Files utility instead of Java.

To correct this, right click on the jar file and select properties, then change the opening application to "Java". It should be in the list of possible files if you have a JRE installed.

I don't seem to have Java installed, or at least it isn't available on the list of programs to open with. I thought I downloaded Java the other day, but I can't find evidence of it on my computer.

Would someone be so kind as to direct me to a reliable site where I can download/install the latest version of Java? Thanks in advance.
