I'm still in a bit of shock. He was ill, I thought he was still getting over being sick, since he didn't reply to some emails. He was a lot sicker then we thought. He's too young to have a heart attack.

Oh my god... my condolences to his family and friends and all of you at HERO. I know that I should have said it sooner, but I'll say it now: thank you Andy for all of your hard work at HERO.

Re: A Sad Day For The Hero Family

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hero Games family, as well as the Mathews family. I am saddened that I never got the chance to meet Andy in person, but of course I am very grateful for all of the very fine work Andy did on Hero games' products.

Re: A Sad Day For The Hero Family

“Each man’s death diminishes me, for I am involved in the business of Mankind.”
    --John Donne

Andy Matthews was a terrific guy: a loving husband and a dedicated father. Though I have never had the privilege of meeting his family, he spoke fondly of them whenever we were together at conventions or a business meeting. He was a patriot who worried about the wellbeing of his country, and made an effort to stay informed on the issues of the day. He invariably soft-spoken, polite, and thoughtful in his dealings with others -- or at least with me, and I’m not always easy to get along with.

He was a religious man: a believer. We can take comfort in knowing that death did not frighten him. He had a kind of spiritual strength that I have always envied as I have never truly possessed it. To me, this makes the loss of him all the more terrible.

Andy was hardworking and talented; and not only Hero Games, where he supervised countless projects. In the 90’s he worked for Algonquin Books in North Carolina, where amongst other things he did the layout on the R. Crumb illustrated Little Blues Book. I bought a copy of it years before I met Andy. In fact, I’m looking at it right now. It’s a tiny masterpiece in every respect. It makes me feel sad to look at it, but in some ways it also makes me happy. Andy played midwife to countless artistic and creative endeavors in his career, including many of mine. His legacy will continue on even though he has left us.

Re: A Sad Day For The Hero Family

I think we all know how I feel about revealing sentiment. But.

One of the first times and only times I encountered him was right here on this board; he actually was the first to rep me for my HICCoS. A stupid memory, I'm sure, against everything else, but that always stuck with me. I always got the impression that Andy "got it." The thing that makes gaming what it is, and the little things -- like repping the new guy's sig -- that keep it together.

That moment, alone, is enough for me to shed tears at his loss. I grieve on behalf of my friends and colleagues, and wish all the best for his family.

Yeah, wow. My sympathies and condolences to everyone that knew him. Shocking and scary to hear about someone dying at an age like his.
"Do it?" Dan, I'm not a Republic serial villain. Do you seriously think I'd explain my master-stroke if there remained the slightest chance of you affecting its outcome?

I did it thirty-five minutes ago.

My condolences to his family, and his friends... the latter it would seem, he had earned many of by being a heck of a guy. RIP
