A Sad Day For The Hero Family

We're deeply saddened to have to report that our Art Director and friend, Andy Mathews, died early this morning of a heart attack. Andy's been with DOJ from the start, and he was one of my closest friends long before that. We knew he'd been sick lately, but needless to say we're all stunned by this tragedy.

Andy leaves behind a wife and two young sons. We haven't begun to work out any details yet, but we hope to set up a scholarship fund for them or otherwise help the family out, and we'll keep you posted on the details.

This is horrible on so many levels. I have no words that would be adequate.

Andy was a great man. I shall miss him.

Here's a picture of him leading the music at the GenCon church service.

Steve Long gets a lot of credit for bringing Hero Games back from the brink (and rightly so), but Andy Mathews had a great deal to do with making the company what it is today. A lot of the things we think of when we hear "Hero Games" can be laid at his feet. I'm sorry now that I didn't say so publicly more often. He deserved to hear it.

I'm so sorry, this breaks my heart. I only just met the man in person at the last Gencon, and yet we got along like old friends. I have tears in my eyes as I write this. My most sincere condolences to Andy's family, and his family at Hero Games.

I'm so sorry to hear this. My condolences to his family, and the extended DOJ/HeroGames family.
All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of God.

Words cannot begin to capture how sad I feel and how much Andy will be missed. I treasured his friendship, and my heart and prayers go out to Lynn and the boys.

Most of us here have known Andy through his quiet creativity, often without even realizing whose artistry we were enjoying. But to truly understand Andy's heart, I encourage you to visit his blog at http://jestersbasement.blogspot.com while it is still available.
