Fantasy HERO Setting -- World of Generica

I'm giving some thought to putting together an ersatz, lightly sketched in high fantasy setting primarily for use in examples and to provide a more coherent framework to present generic fantasy content within.

The idea is that the setting would include all of the basic, generic high fantasy RPG tropes, without anything too specific or distinctive or "creative" / innovative.

For instance, there could be a handful of cultures whose main purpose is to justify common character types (Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, Thief) and conflict opportunities, treasure hunting / dungeon delving, political / social adventuring, etc.

There are some fixed constants that I want to be present in the setting (to serve its intended purpose as a platform for examples), but beyond that I'm open to (even eager for) collaboration or at least input.

So I thought I would come here and see if some of you, my fellow herophiles, would be interested in collaborating on such a project with me?

A heck, sure. I don't have the time to do a full setting by myself, but would be glad to contribute some hours to a shared platform.

I can't lend any time to the creation but I'd be more than happy to review and "edit" if you needed.

Nah, I've done my time as a D&D apologist - attempting to patch believability and continuity over things. My head would explode if I did any more.

And since you are a long time collaborator, I know your contributions will be good

Yeah, I understand that it could be a conflict for you, what w/ your own published setting to develop for. Its the thought that counts.

That's too bad...Your skills and input would have been valued. I actually popped over to curufea.com before posting this to see if it might be a good place to host it. I've pulled down a .NET wiki package and will see if its worth tacking directly on to my site; could be a good general addition.

I didn't really have a D&D style in mind, but I can see how High Fantasy and D&D are synonymous for some.

It's GENERIC fantasy and D&D that are seen as synonymous.

Re: Fantasy HERO Setting -- World of Generica

I would definitely be interested in contributing - I have been very quiet on the HERO front in the last year (I think the last game-related thing I contributed was a write-up for a Bohemian Ear-Spoon) as I have been running Mongoose RQ for a change of pace. The last HERO campaign I ran was in ICE's Shadow World, where I created a vague facsimile of the Rolemaster magic system for the party.

Sadly, at the moment not running anything because, for various reasons (University exams, players getting non-gamer gf's and dropping off the face of the map, 'natural wastage'), I currently have no players - so I am playing in a Call of Cthulhu campaign and in various Trail of Cthulhu scenarios.

Count me in, if you'd like.
Eosin- ~ "'Wrong' is a D&Dism ~ 'I do it this way' is a Heroism."

SCUBA Hero- "If you did Turn the Palindromedary, how would you know? "

    Roxanna: I need a margarita.
Niels: I don't think Dwarves make mixed drinks.
Ithan: That's because when Dwarves mix their alcohol, they get fire and explosions!

It would be wonderful. It would be like that scene in that movie that everyone quotes where the one guy says something awesome to the other guy.

I am not that creative but I wouldn't mind being a sounding board for this. Spit out some ideas and I'll let you know which would work and which need work.

    PS also this sounds cool.

Re: Fantasy HERO Setting -- World of Generica

Well, it seems like there is definitely interest.

I'll start putting together some structure over the next week or so and will come back with talking points to start useful discussion. In the meantime, if those of you who want to participate have time you might want to start a list of any strong ideas you have on the subject. Also, it might be useful for us to attempt a chat and get some real time back and forth.

    More to come.

You can put it on the wiki and things, I've no problem with that - I'm just getting tired of working backwards from game stereotypes to whatever might have caused them. I'm very much a world first designer.
