Thumbs up Cut 'em Off at the Horsehead Nebula!

Notes on how the TV show Firefly borrowed character archtypes as if it were "Stagecoach in Space." A valuable way for game masters to create non player characters. Or for players to create their own characters, for that matter.

Interesting. Especially when you realize that Star Trek was originally pitched to NBC as being "Wagon Train in space."

Wow, without even knowing it, I have *for years* been enjoying the wrong type of adventure fiction. Cause I'll admit proudly that the Western and Space Opera go hand-in-hand dancing through the tulips. At least now I know I've been wrong.

I still don't want to be right though .

Incidentally, for those who don't know, the term "horse opera" was a pejorative for cheesy, formulaic westerns. The term "space opera" was coined as an analogous term for cheesy, formulaic science fiction.

Those three posts are a great read, and educational to boot. Good stuff. Repped.

    They lied! They lied!
And don't worry, everyone, Hawkeye is back, ready to shoot an arrow at something in case we run out of bullets!

Not really. The reference was used to point out the fact that the characters would be traveling to different places every week, rather than being in a fixed location and having the stories come to them. And, since Wagon Train was a popular show, making the connection between the two in the minds of the execs couldn't hurt.

Whether Star Trek was as good as Wagon Train is a matter of personal taste.

back to the original topic: Anyone remember the movie Outland? Very much a western set in space.
