    New to Hero

    Hi guys

I have been a long time roleplayer but only the other day did I buy my first Hero system books. I have been reading through the 6th edition stuff and I have to say I love it. I am fully converted.

I used to gm some Mutants & Masterminds, I loved the flexibility of their character creation system but the combat system really struck me as dull. For some reason in an age where everyone is dumbing down their rules systems to appeal to the younger (please dont make me have to think market ) I seem to be attracted to more crunch in my rules. So looks like my Mutants & Masterminds game will be converted to the Hero system. It just seems to have the stuff I like in M&M but does it better and has more IMO.

Also as I read the Hero system I can't help but want to use the system as a replacement for D&D. As you can probably guess from my previous statements I am not a fan of the 4th edition.

Anyway just wanted to say I am a new gamer to your system, I was drawn to it by the rules, the fantastic production value of the new books and more importantly the sheer size of the volumes. I find them to be fantastic value for money. I cant wait to start playing.

Carnus, I know exactly how you feel. I've been playing games a long time and just found my way to Hero late in the last edition. I'm even using it to convert a miniature strategy game for use as a setting. Welcome.

This. I had a difficult time with it starting out, but once I grokked it... OMG! D&D was the only other RPG I played that had a lot of tactical options. Most don't have any beyond "the GM can assign modifiers for creative moves", which is... blah. And D&D 3.5, while fairly diverse, did not have a set of rules that felt cohesive and logical. I was constantly thinking, "If this works this way, why does this conceptually similar maneuver work THIS way...?" Ugh. The Hero System combat is both elegant and powerful.

It might be interesting to post up some actual examples of tactical examples in Hero. This might serve as a source in inspiration for both new comers and experienced Herophiles alike. Both RAW and houserules should be considered.

    Thanks guys,

I am just starting to read Volume 2 of the core books, so I will get to the combat system soon.

Welcome to Hero! I use it for low-Fantasy games primarily although I have converted over CthulhuTech and Exalted. You won't be disappointed.

Ooo CthulhuTech now thats a game I am tempted.. no no focus focus.

Well For now I will be converting my Mutants & Masterminds campaign to Hero system. It is an Iron Age/ Street level/ Horror setting.

I was just playing around with hero designer (at work )and converted one of the player characters to Hero and it works perfectly, actually he works better than what he was in M&M.

After getting the hang of the rules and running some games I will look at converting my old D&D setting to Hero. I was getting a lot of ideas from just reading the rule books.

Welcome to Hero, Carnus! As some folx have already posted, feel free to ask questions -- you may get bombarded with answers, often very differing ones, but there's no denying that Hero fans are both friendly and enthusiastic.

If you like low fantasy and tech, and you don't mind a little actual work, check out Urban Fantasy. It's all about how to do stories like The Dresden Files and other urban fantasy tales. The four included mini-settings aren't complete (hence, the actual work) but they're a great starting point and provide tons of ideas for GMs. There's even a take on a Shadowrun-esque "urban fantasy" (just the magic though, no cyberwear).

But please don't; it stings like the blazes, and I pimp-slap back.
