    Old School

    Who do you consider an "old school" pencil and paper roleplaying gamer?

    Is it a matter of years? Does it take having used a certain system, possibly for a certain length of time? Do you need to have Dm'd? Would it require a certain event to happen in a game? How about a cane, is that needed?

    If it helps, i've been playing PnP RPGs for about ten years now.
    Systems I use: D&D 3.5, Pathfinder, Star Wars SAGA, Star Wars Revised Core Rules, GURPS 4th Edition, Shadowrun 4th Edition, Monte Cook's World of Darkness, New World of Darkness, Spycraft 2.0, d20 Modern, Alternity, Savage Worlds, HERO 6th Edition, and Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition.

    Quit bashing other systems: it isn't doing you any favors.

    Definitely the cane... or maybe a walker.

    Someone who has seen or gone through at least two edition changes in their preferred gaming system. For instance, a HERO player that started in 4th edition or earlier; a D&D player from 3.0 or earlier; and so on. If you can look back in fondness on (or, if you're a GM, have house rules to include) stuff from a much prior edition of the game, I think you qualify for "old school" status.

    Re: Old School

    I'd say most definitely anyone who's gaming experience goes back before 3rd ed. Heck I'd even say anyone gaming regularly before the D&D black books, players options I think they were called. I gotta definitely agree with Susano, pre 1980 is most definitely old school, but I gotta say that I'm considered an old school gamer by most around here, and I've been gaming since '85, and I'm considered an old schooler by most people who started playing with 3.0 edition D&D.
    Outside of D&D, and the previous list I'd like to add;
    Palladium pre-Rifts (Ninjas and Superspies, Heroes Unlimited, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Robotech)
    Chaosium (CoC, Elfquest, Stormbringer, not Elric)
    West end Games (Star Wars, Masterkey System (master something anyway), Indiana Jones)
    It's all I can think of, and constituted most of the games my group played outside of D&D. I didn't find Hero until 4th edition in the late 90's.

    Re: Old School

    Keep in mind there's no consensus on what old school is. There are people who don't consider AD&D 2nd Edition old school; some of them don't even consider the 1st Edition Unearthed Arcana old school.

    Understood. This topic isn't about one single definition, just everyone's take on what it means to them.
