    Re: Old School

I just found Dragonsfoot, and yah, some of those guys are hard core.... It's good to have conversation in AD&D terms again, and it's helping me brush up for my game.

As a side note, I've got my group to decide and be in favor of playing 2nd ed, and I'm happy. So it seems that I've got a Human Paladin/Cavalier (kit), Grey elven (complete book of elves) Wizard (Mage- universalist) and Thief, and a Highelven (PHB) Druid.

Not bad, I tried to get the human to take a Fighter/Cavelier (+5 to hit & Damage w/Lance) and one less with a bastard sword to hit. plus one more HP... but he's got some good Saving throws as a paladin... and he seems to have wanted to play it this way, so whatever, I guess I'm just more of a fighter type player... lol.

I'm thinking to make the world a little more "elven" in nature, due to the high level of elves in the party. If you've ever seen Stardust (or read it, I'm assuming, because I haven't, so I wouldn't know), I'm wanting to make something like a barrier between worlds... and once per Human lifetime one man of impeccable virtue is sent over past the barrier to the elven kingdoms... where there be monsters... and adventure. I dunno, what you all think?
if the Norse say that Fenris is a Dark hued wolf, then where are the Wolves of Winter?

FWIW, Champions was heavily influenced by Superhero: 2044, which was a point-based system with no random component, published in 1977. Unfortunately, it (SH2044) was so incomplete as to be nearly unplayable, which is why superior games like Champions were created.

To me Old School is AD&D (second edition counts) or earlier and Villains & Vigilantes

Nah, you're not old; there are those who don't consider 2nd Edition AD&D old school. Some don't even consider the 1st Edition Unearthed Arcana old school!

Why has thou called me from my slumbers? Of ages agone have I dreamed in gleaming silence, 'till mortals dared to summon me.
And if you've got Mountain Dew and Cheetos, I'll regale you of carrying my copies of Gamma World, Oriental Adventures, Fiend Folio and Unearthed Arcana to GMing sessions where legions of psionic warriors battled mind flayers in mental combat. Using the stupid, stupid, Players' Handbook rules that, incidentally, nerfed the Illithids to the point where PCs actually hunted them down for easy kills.

*"Old-school" is remembering a time when paladins were the ultimate munchkin class. Depending on how you interpret the OA kensai rules. I mean, I'm sure that 32 bare-hand attacks/round isn't book legal, but that seems to be what the rules are saying. Ah, Gary Gygax and your terrible proof-reading skills. How I miss them.

    Ha... Old school.....

I learned about RPG in primary school via "L'Oeil Noir" the french translation of "Das Schwarze Auge" (First translated in english in 2003 as "Dark Eye RPG", about 18 years after I first played it!), right after starting secondary school, I was introduced to the Red Box D&D Basic... and shortly after that to AD&D 1st Edition. Hell, I remember waiting at the store for the shippment of 2nd ed to finally arrive!

Its at that same store that I learned about HERO... unfortunately, it was't AD&D, so nobody in my regular group wanted to play :/

    Re: Old School

I know the feeling. I once had a group that didn't want to play other games other than AD&D (and the occasional MERP game) or use settings other than Greyhawk or Middle-earth. I had bought several games and wanted to try them out. It was frustrating that nobody else was interested.

I've lost count of the games I bought and couldn't get others in my group to play over the years. I still haven't had a chance to try out my Scooby Doo CCG.

Hey, it's just another sign of the Apocalypse. I'm just waiting for the Teletubbies CCG.

I'd expect that to be an expansion to the Mythos CCG...

Wrong thread. That should go into the Horror in 50 Words or Less thread.
