    Is it worth it?

    When I go to see samples of digital hero, all I get is a standard internet viewer page, filled with white letters on a black background. After my eyes stop watering I close the window - its that bad. From the comments on art and such, I assume the downloadable version is in a different format. I suppose my question is more in the line of - is the format readable, does it look professional, etc. than is it worth it. I might be tempted to try it out, but not based on what I've looked at in the previews- I've seen kids make better looking web sites than trying to read the previews. Why not have one page so that we can see some of what we're getting (or is that it?). I'd appreciate any comments you might have. Thanks

    Like you, I was underwhelmed by the formating of the free samples, though my thought at the time was "Oh well, I get what I paid for." Still, I had mistakenly thought it was much the same if you paid for it.

    Man was I wrong. Having seen DH#13, the PDF is much better, both on the eyes, and in style. I can only go by one issue, but I think it's definitely worth it, if you have the money, and if it has a subject you like (And since you can preview a table of contents before buying, that shouldn't be too hard to determine).

    Just IMO though.

    It downloads as a .pdf. It's readable. "Worth it" is something you'll need to decide.

    I subscribe, and don't regret it (for what that's worth).

    I hate PDFs, and got a DH subscription just so I could get the FH Playtest.

    However, I flipped thru the DH hero issues that came with and was blown away.

    They are definitely worth it (though some issues are better than others) even though I hate the medium they are in, and I highly recommend Digital HERO to all HEROphiles.

    I agree. Dave Mattingly does a GREAT job putting the DH issues into a readable format. They are first rate. I print them out on the duplex color laser at work...beautiful.

    Yeah, the formatting is on par with the rest of the HERO line (though I haven't printed them out so I don't know how the artwork comes across). I was just thinking how much better DH is compared to Adventurer's Club (which wasn't terrible by any means). Some issues are more useful than others to me, but it's more than worth the subscription price to me.

    Yeah, that'll happen.

    Thumbs up

    I was also reluctant to take the DH plunge, but when I finally sprang for a subscription I was pleasantly surprised. Characters, adventures, rules discussion, roleplaying tips - almost every issue has had something I've really enjoyed, all in a very professional looking package. Some of the regular items I always look forward to:

    Steve Long's "Heroglyphs" column: expanding the possibilities of the HERO System;

    Darren Watts' writeups of prominent characters in the Champions Universe;

    Jason Walters' "You Gotta Have Character" articles, giving HERO System writeups to notable historical figures.

    You get a lot for that $30 subscription (even with the Canada/US exchange rate), and I'm very glad I bought it.

    Glitz factor about 6 out of 10.

    Content factor 9 out of 10.

    Seriously there is real useable stuff in every single issue so far. Several issues have adventures, all have characters, and all so far have alternate and additional rules via Steve's monthly column.

    The most recent issue (13) has sparked the most interst with the inclusion of the MC8. I was very pleased with the article and all of the characters.

    I submistted two articles so far:

    The Effectiveness Rating (DH#3)- an article covering a tool for measuring a charcters fighting power usable as a GM aide and a character contruction guide.

    Unearthed Mechana- A short but challenging adventure for newer champions players and GM's with new GM tips.

    I really liked Vipers Folding Nest ( a past adventure). Another article I liked was The Bayside Blimp. I thought Steve's Heroglyphs article on entangles and his treatment on trigger were outstanding.

    Well... the price is right as well.
