    Just as Universal Weapon Familiarity lends itself well to the broad background warrior, other Universals do the same to other classes.

    e.g., Universal Scientist for broad background wizards (that can learn spells from any school of magic).

    That would be "Universal Magic Theory". It does not imply ability to learn any spells, as those rules depend on the campaign.
    In fact, if having the skill is a Prequisite or it Requires a roll of that skill UMT will not allow him to cast/learn it - he still has to buy the skill seperately.

    How did this subject go from someone being able to pick anything up and haveing a good chance to be able to use it to "Universal Magic Theory"?

    We were discussing universals (like universal weapon familarity is one) in different genres.
