3rd Party Licenses hopefully include previous versions too?

In other news, we've crafted a new 3rd party license under which outside publishers can release their own Hero System products. We're letting existing licensees review it for a week or so, then we'll make it public so you can all have a look at it.

Does anybody know if the 3rd party license will extend to all previous versions of Hero System? There were some wonderful 3rd party products for previous versions--5th in particular, like Hero Traveller and Echoes of Heaven--that dropped out of sight or dropped Hero because of lapsed licensing for previous versions of Hero.

I think it would help sustain the Hero community if Hero supported previous versions to some degree, similar to what Catalyst does with Shadowrun and White Wolf does with it's various World of Darkness spawn.

I'm pretty sure Hero Traveller disappearing was a result of Traveller licensing not Hero licensing.

First, Rod is right -- the Traveler Hero thing had to do with the Traveler licensing terms, not Hero's.

Second, in response to the original question -- no. The license specifically requires the use of the 6E rules and forbids the use of earlier editions of the rules.

Ah! Knowledge! Thank you! In that case, I eagerly anticipate Hero 6th edition sweeping through the gaming world on the new license!

Given that one of the purposes of supplements (in any system) is to help sell more core books to new players, this was assumed by me.
I also think it is a fantastic thing.

edit - the thing that is fantastic is the license. not the 6E only.

You know how you play with a cat by dangling a peice of sting within his grasp, and then pull it away as he grabs for it? If the string isn't exciting and tempting the cat won't grab. But if you pull away early too many times and deny him too often, the cat gives up in frustration. The skill is in finding the sweet spot between those extremes where its fun for you and the cat.

    That's what a GM's job is.

    *grumble, grumble*

Now I have to buy the 6E books.

Well, I guess it's good marketing strategy.

    Thank you very kindly, sir!

Now if the board will just stop futzing around and let me change my avatar, I will get that one in place.

And so it begins..... Now all we need is a nice Conan-esque opening monologue to really get the product ball rolling......

Know, O prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of WOTC and it's OGL, there was an Age undreamed of, when Buckets of d6's lay spread across the gaming table like Cosmic cubes in the hand of the Red Skull - Green Ronin, White Wolf, Eden Games, Swords and Sorcery, Fantasy Flight with its dark-haired women and 40K product of spider-haunted mystery, Inner City Games with its Wierdness, AEG that bordered on the pastoral lands of, well it's AEG so move on, Steve Jackson Games with its shadow-guarded Supplements to everything, Kenzer and Company whose old folks yelled "Get off my Lawn!" to the youth of the world. But the proudest kingdom of the world was HERO GAMES, reigning supreme in the dreaming minds of Game Masters capable of reading a real book........

Or some such sort of thing.....
