    MYTHIC HERO Kickstarter

    Howdy Herophiles!

I'm proud to announce the launch of my first HERO System-based Kickstarter project: Mythic Hero!

You can go to Kickstarter and pledge your support here: Mythic Hero Kickstarter.

My goal is to raise $33,000 in pledges by April 2 to write, lay out, and publish the book. (You can visit my website [see link below] for a precise cost breakdown, if you're interested.) I'd really appreciate any support you can offer!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Kickstarter, here's how it works. Kickstarter is a form of "crowdfunding," in which people such as yourselves offer their financial support for a creative project to see it completed. You can pledge as much as you want, from $1 up to any amount. At certain pledge levels (such as $10, $25, and $50), there are special "rewards" you get for backing the project. For example, for the MH Kickstarter, pledging $25 gets you a PDF of the book and thanks in the credits, while pledging $75 gets you all that and a copy of the hardcopy printed book.

When you pledge to back a Kickstarter project, no money is taken from you unless the project reaches its full funding level. If it fails to reach its goal (in the case of MH, $33,000), then no money is taken from anyone and the project doesn't see the light of day.

To find out more about Mythic Hero. please visit the Mythic Hero page on my website.

    Thanks!

    Re: MYTHIC HERO Kickstarter

Well, I think it's smart to allow more time to raise that much moolah. I'm going to try to see if I can justify pledging 300 bucks. Otherwise I'll probably kick in for 75 or 150.
It is unclear why the bear, which was wearing ice skates at the time, attacked Mr Potapov. The bear was later shot by police. Deadly attacks are rare in the country's circuses, which often train bears to wear skates and play ice hockey.

That's part of it. More specifically, I think carrying the deadline through more of tax season means more likelihood people will get their tax refunds back and perhaps devote some of that money to MH. Ordinarily I think closer to 30 days is plenty of time, but in this case I was willing to make an exception.

I just got my refund and set aside 100 for game books (bascially this book and a few from Blackwyrm).

I've got the wife talked into helping out with her own fun money, but she is looking for a Bibliography of source material (I also asked on the FAQ on the Kickstarter). She loves Primary resources. If you can say yes there will be an extensive bibliography, I can get 10 bucks out of her.
You know how you play with a cat by dangling a peice of sting within his grasp, and then pull it away as he grabs for it? If the string isn't exciting and tempting the cat won't grab. But if you pull away early too many times and deny him too often, the cat gives up in frustration. The skill is in finding the sweet spot between those extremes where its fun for you and the cat.

    That's what a GM's job is.

Side bet: I'm so sure there will be, even before Steve answers, that if Steve doesn't say there'll be an extensive bibliography, I'll kick in the 10 bucks.

About what I figured too - I alos thought that asking on the FaQ at the kickstarter could raise a bit more interest. The wife was watching the video and basically said "I want the names, Author, ISBN (any two of the three) of every book on that shelf." When I asked her if she would help, that was her requirement. But I had to get confirmation before I got the money.

I'm just going to turn around and spend the 10 bucks on more hero product Hero or 3rd Party.

I love the extras - designing Gods, your illustration - and because (unlike BotE) the writing isn't done, it is in the book, not as an extra. I'm just hoping sometime to have enough free cash to pledge a $2000 dollar level. Just once.

Pleged $75 - I was going to anyway, just wanted the extra from the wife. Wish I could pledge more, but money is tight right now.
This book is likely going to be one of my 3 or 4 most used books in my entire Hero library.

    Re: MYTHIC HERO Kickstarter

    Thanx LM!

As I mentioned to you in my message from KS, and as I just added to the FAQ at the project page, there will in fact be a Bibliography. My mythology, legend, and folklore library currently contains 324 volumes (you can see a slightly out of date pic of it on my website, and it's also in the background of the KS video). It's growing nearly every week as I look for more research material for MH. Most of those books will find their way into the Bibliography at the end of MH, organized chapter by chapter so you can easily find all the books on, say, Egyptian mythology if that's what you're interested in.

So far I've written four chapters of the book in full, and partial bits of several more. Already the Bibliography is over 1,000 words long, and that's with no explanatory text -- just authors and titles.

I told the wife and got a huge grin. And thanks for the reply on both paces. I just had to include the humourous reason I asked over on this side. And it means Derek you are safe - as we both expected.

Yeah, that puts a very different spin on things. I've already had one backer send me his idea for the god he wants and I'm only 7% funded so far.

Should I be fortunate enough to reach my primary goal early, I have a couple of ideas for "now let's try for the secondary goal" encouragement rewards that I hope will really knock peoples' socks off. They don't work as primary rewards but they'll make for good incentives later on, if necessary.

    Re: MYTHIC HERO Kickstarter

    I just pledged $75.

I'd also like to say, Steve, I like that this time around for your Kickstarter you are putting the Pledge-created characters into the book for everyone to enjoy.

I liked the idea for having a tier that people get to help create content, I did not however like that everyone didn't get to benefit from it.

Just my $0.02 there, but I hope that this form of incentive will continue instead of the other "private reserve" form that was used previously.

Them's the benefits of not having written the book beforehand.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what sort of gods backers come up with. If all goes well I'll get to create a couple of different example pantheons, and I can make each one distinct so that readers have lots of examples to work from.

Well, one more into the breach. Day 1 and 10% there. Let's hope this meets its goal.

"Do it?" Dan, I'm not a Republic serial villain. Do you seriously think I'd explain my master-stroke if there remained the slightest chance of you affecting its outcome?

I did it thirty-five minutes ago.

Hear, hear! Another nine days like the first and I'll be set to go.

Now, obviously that's not likely to actually happen, but I think having such a strong first day is a good sign. That puts the project a third of the way to the magic 30% mark, for one thing. But there's still a long way to go, so please -- tell your friends, tell your families, alert the Internets!

    Re: MYTHIC HERO Kickstarter

Hey Steve, I have to say that finding out about the details of this project has gotten me quite excited. Just seeing the title on the production schedule didn't do a ton for me, but seeing what's going to be covered and checking out the video really sold me.

I'm just curious to know if the "printed version" will be a paperback or a hardcover.

    Kindest Regards,
