    Windows 7 install problem

After the screen where you select which parts of HD you want to install, it just shows a blank screen and sits there. It's definitely not doing anything; I left it overnight. Hitting "Next" does nothing. Hitting "Previous" returns to the previous screen, so it's not frozen.

I have the 64-bit version of the jre; one thread mentioned the 32-bit version is needed for HD?

    Thanks.

intall HD to a flash drive using XP then manually place it in a folder on your Win 7 machine
use the runHD MS-DOS Batch file to start HD

Dan may have a better way, this worked for me and my Win 7 laptop

    Re: Windows 7 install problem

Install HD into a directory that you have access to, first and foremost. This is the single most common problem that folks have on Windows 7 (or Vista) systems -- not understanding their own system as it tries to protect them from themselves.

Do not "force" HD into a directory that you do not have full rights to. For example, do NOT install HD onto a USB drive and then copy it over to your Program Files directory. You will experience multiple errors and missing functionality during routine operation of the program.

Dan you have said that Java 64 bit does not play well with the HD installer

I went and installed it on an 8 gig SD card and just left that in my Win 7 laptop and it works fine
even went and made shortcuts to it for my desktop and it works

    Re: Windows 7 install problem

There have been instances in which a 64-bit JVM will encounter errors with the installer -- what is being described in the post is not one of them.

There are far more instances in which a 64-bit JVM works just fine with the installer. The most common issue encountered during installation is what I noted above: people not understanding the security mechanisms in place on their systems.

Made sure I had permission for the folder; no change.

What folder did you install to?

To be very clear: installing to a USB drive and then copying the installation over to the intended folder does not help (not even a little bit). It _may_ allow you to bypass the permissions errors that you run into during installation, but will have no effect on permissions errors that will occur during runtime.

If the installer runs well enough to install to a USB drive, then it runs fine on your system and will install to your hard drive without issue, so long as you have permissions to the folder that you are installing to.

If the installer is having a problem on your system due to the (relatively discrete) combination of chip architecture, system software/configuration, and JVM chipset, then it will have problems no matter what installation directory/drive you select.

    * Tried to install to the hard drive at "\Program Files\Hero Designer". Made sure I had permissions first.
    * Tried to install to a Truecrypt drive (something I had previously done successfully in XP, although not on the same USB stick) on a USB stick at "\Hero Designer".
    * The differences are a new HD, new USB stick and Windows 7 as opposed to XP.

You don't have full permission to the directory you're installing to, simple as that.

Look up UAC....then install to your home directory or into your Documents directory.

Unless I'm missing something, the permissions are set.

    You are missing something.

You do not have full access to that directory. Listen to what you're being told and install to your home directory or to your Documents folder.

Tried to install to "C:\Users\$MyUserName\Documents\Hero Designer". Same problem.

Then check the version of Java that you have installed.

Regardless of the Java version, you are going to need to install to your home directory or your documents directory...or other directories that are not under the control of UAC.

    "Java(TM) 6 Update 30 (64-bit)"

I suppose the next thing to try is to uninstall that, install the 32-bit version and try that.
