Thoughts of the soon to be out Daredevil movie drew me to this question.

What characters in the Champions Universe would pass the cosplay test? That is, what costumes would not look ridiculous if they were worn by someone in real world.

Every single costume would look ridiculous. Grond's a four-armed green guy in underwear. Terrifying, but ridiculous. You can't wear spandex or a mask in public without looking like a deviant. Well, I suppose most female supers would look just dandy dancing up on a stage considering the wonderbra-esque soft porn they're drawn as.

I'm sorry. My first response to the character was that it was a characature of the Blue Falcon.

Then I realized I was supposed to take that costume seriously.

Then I realized they were using him as one of their Icons.

In reflecting on this thread, it has occured to me that we may be a bit too harsh. A lot of outfits that people have worn in other times and cultures. Whether or not some superhero outfits look any goofier than stuff people wore in the sixties and seventies is a matter for doubt. And how about some of the more bizarre creations of fashion designers these days?

That being said, I am inclined to think it would be hard for a lot of those costumes to become fashionable, though frighteningly enough during the sixties that might have been possible...

Menton would look pretty smooth. Or at least, you'd 'think' he did. :)

Firewing would look fine, considering he'd be wreathed in flames!

Did you see the latest Bond film. Pretty lame, IMO... but I loved the title sequence, with the female figures digitally enhanced to be covered in ice or flame.

The flame effects were outstanding. I kept thinking, "If they do a Fantastic Four movie, then the Human Toarch will look amazing!"

Hope to see more "power effects as costumes" in future super movies, since I think that will be a way to make the costume work, unlike spandex.

In our low power game, which was essentially the introduction of supers to a "real world" (with lots of annoying more realistic physics that you had to work around, too) one player intentionally made himself a fire sheath/ice sheath guy so he didn't have to worry. One guy had to wear a tarp (he grew) and another guy used a scarf like a bandana and one relied on super speed blurring (me) until an unfortunate jacket snag at 60mph busted me up. Then I started wearing spandex running suits and a helmet which eventually got fancier and fancier until it turned into an actual super-hero esque costume.

Then as PR came into play, everyone started wearing costumes for identification and PR purposes... but the trend actually started out as wearing "something form fitting with the least chance to snag on something."

Y'know... I'd heard he was doing this... after his success with Harry "Ripped off of Neil Gaiman's Tim Hunter" Potter movies.

Could be worth seeing. We really are in the era of geek heaven. Movies and comics and RPGs and video games are all advancing, so that we can experience our geek loves in ways we could only imagine as kids.

And it's directed by Chris Columbus no less

I wouldn't bet on Columbus being the final director. That film is still in its early embryonic stages. They have no script (that they want to shoot), no cast, and the director is going to be tied up with Harry Potter for years to come with filming complications piling up daily.

BTW, the studio wants to do a comedic FF. This is going to suck harder than a black hole in the Negative Zone.

Are you kidding! An orange, rocky Thing wearing a Groucho Marx glasses and nose? WHHEEEE!!

Here's my ten bucks! ;)

(Seriously... after the success of X-Men, Spider-Man, and likely Daredevil... they want to make a comedy out of the FF? What the hell?)

Chris is leaving the Potter Series according to recent interviews and is still on board as of two weeks ago (but of course that means nada) and a recent Avi Arad interview said they wanted to FF movie to have SOME humor, but that after the last FF fiasco that they wanted a hardcore Superhero movie.

After Blade, Blade2, X-Men, Spiderman (and hopefully Daredevil) I have a growing faith in Marvel's Movie ventures.
