Ninja Hero Question: A monks staff

In several Anime programs I've seen monk's carrying the same staff. It's got a metal circle on top, which is split down the middle by another band of metal. On either side are smaller metal rings. What is this staff called, and what is it's significance?

I don't remember what it's called, but the rings are there to make noise. From what I recall, those who use it (Buddhists?) don't want to kill any living thing, so they don't want to accidentally run into animals or such.

It is called a shakujo-bo or "seven-ring staff." Used by monks as a walking stick and (possible) weapon. The rings jangle as one walks along, and the sound is said to ward of evil (or scare off anything the monk might accidently step on). I have seen an anime (Raven Tengu Kabuto IIRC) where the evil (false) priest had a sword blade in the staff and the rings formed part of the hilt.

I would give it the stastics of a normal staff (for a heroic monk). Prehaps the monk can buy some 'magic' or ki powers using the staff as a focus? Also, I would also give him an increse in PRE attack agenst evil beasts.
