First of all let me provide a spoiler warning. If any player from my future Red Star game lurks on this thread I will be very ticked. I'll give you a chance to back out now. You know who you are. :tsk:

Ok, I'm trying to create a sniper character for the heros to deal with. Sort of a crime scene investigators thing. The sniper will be heinously powerful given time and preperation. but if you get him running or get one step ahead, he should be an easy catch. A little mind over muscle. I am just working with Sidekick, DC and Hudson City. I'll post his stats here but I have a few rules questions at the end for the more knowledgable out there.

My questions are whether you think he will be an effective sniper. We are using hit locations. I used the skill modifiers for target bonus and range bonus. Is that good cost wise? Also are the telescoping sight and the Range modifiers redundant? I have a hero machine pic for him, but I'm trying to commision Storn once his schedule clears up.

Past that any comment you have would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Villian for critique

He seems like he'd be pretty effective, though that depeneds a lot on what the average dcv of the PC's, but since generally he'd attack from surprise, he can pretty much call that first shot and hit. As for the telescopic sight and range skill levels, the telescopic sight would only apply to PER rolls, rather than attacks, he'd still need the range skill levels to make the actual attack. I'm not sure how it works in Sidekick, but i think Find weakness is subject to range modifiers too, and in 5E it's considered an Unusual sense rather than sight group, so to use it effectively at a long distance, you may want to get a few levels of telescopic for that as well.

I think so. The main disadvantage he has as a sniper is that he has a brightly colored easily recognized costume that he always wears - which could give your PCs the edge they need to catch him. A terrain suit could make him an overwhelming frustration to your team.

I think it is cost effective for what you want - a specialist. The redundancy just means he can shoot someone accurately from even further away - not a bad thing for a sniper.

I have a friend who was a marine recon sniper. He had some bad stories to tell. Evidently, the best way to pin down an enemy camp is to shoot the radio guy in the belly and take out the radio, too. He lies bleeding and screaming in the open, and you wound/kill anyone who tries to get to him. He could lie there dying for a couple days at the outside, so the pickins are good for a patient killer.

I'm glad I didn't go to sniper school. That sounds like an awful thing to know intimately.

Re: Villian for critique

He is a very efficient sniper if he has the drop on the players (16- stealth roll), he could hit them in the head with a 3t6+1 rka with no problem at all.

I think that the will not fire without brace and set disadvantage is a little strange? It is also very point heavy. I recommend that you set it down in points to preferred level and give him a small pistol or something. Off course if you want him to be insane then go for it but as is 25 points is very limiting. Also I don’t understand what you mean by “colourful night armour are it not black?

Re: Villian for critique

Some of what Trencher says plus I would add the following.

Omega has +13 OCV while the players are at 1/2 DVC and he takes no penalty for calling a head shot AND thier armor is quartered (AP plus Find Weakness). Assuming 12 DEF Armor to the head that means it drops to 4 Armor - the shot does 12 BODY on average, putting 8 BODY through which then doubles to 16 BODY and more than a hundred STUN (Out of combat STUN doubles). If he rolls up (4.5 average on the die, he does 11 BODY through and doubles that to 22 BODY outright killing a good number of supers). The Hulk is hurting if this guy gets ahold of him.

Snipers generally make very poor RPG antagonists cause they either kill you or they don't get a shot off. With his disads, you further this RP flaw rather than minimize it.

Re: Villian for critique

Thank you for the comments, I'll try and answer.

Baphomet: I'll drop some of the sight telescoping, and turn it into Find weakness telscoping thanks.

Bone Daddy: I don't want to put him in a gilly

Trencher: The disads I'm hoping is a balance for the insane damage he can do. He's got the "one shot one kill" mentality. Waits for a prime shot. Hence his RKA only has 10 shots. Shouldn't need more in his mind. I think I'll give him a MA bodyguard to help if people come in close. Colorful night is a term I've used in real life. I forgot it dosen't make sense to people outside my click. Black, deep purples, deep/night blues. That type. I didn't like straight-up black too often. Since it's a uniform of sorts I added color.

Eosin: Thanks for the numbers. I'll scale it down a bit, but I still want the one shot drops most. As for a sniper protagonist he's not hunting the PC's (yet) he has targets around the city that he has to take out. But those are target he has time to set-up. With the PC's chasing him he wont be able to re-set his sight, brace on a moving target yadda-yadda-yadda.

About him being a crappy protagonist I kinda see your point. But he's part of a larger organization (The Greeks) So I want that group to be the main enemy with this sniper being a thorn that they need to catch/stop. The PER rolls and streewise of the PCs are pretty good. I plan to have them present when the first victim goes down. They see where the shot came from, investigate meet up with Greek thugs and goons (maybe the MA) If they can get some info from them on his next target they stop him before the shot. or get close and catch him on the third one, who knows?

Does that seem a better angle?

I guess it all comes down to his personality, but I think that (don't have the book with me) an 25 point disadvantage will make him go into hysterical shock or something if he have to take a snap shot. Off course he could very well be insane many DC styles of villains are.

Well I guess you learn something new everyday. :)

It warms my heart to see more gamers being involved in fashion.

Bone Daddy: I don't want to put him in a gilly

FWIW (nuthin') I agree entirely.

As for the heroes seeing where the shot came from, consider the following:

A real life specialty sniper rifle (Browning makes a nice .50 caliber one I believe, with a free floating barrel) is quite accurate (standard deviation of less than an inch) at a range of about 2 miles. The sound from the shot, which would be fairly soft compared to the screaming all around, should come about 9 seconds after the super sonic round. The muzzle flash would be visible instantly, but again - 2 miles away. At that range a muzzle flash a meter wide would be a little smaller than a nickel held at arms length, and it would come about a second before anything important happened nearby. If one of your PCs is a PER monster, great - no problem. Otherwise, the Greek has to do something stupid to give away his position. That's OK - all literature is based on smart people making stupid decisions.

BTW - I think this character idea/ story arc kicks ass. Neat frustration for the heroes.

Re: Villian for critique

It really comes down to how you introduce him into the story. If he starts off gunning for the heros first, they'll be surprised, and one of them will most likely be dead. If you gun down a civilian first, they'll know they're dealing with a sniper, and will act accordingly. Maybe it's just me, but I think the latter would be more fun. It also seems to be the most common way to use snipers in adventure fiction. Somebody snipes a less important character and the others dive for cover, or they snipe a character and the heroes drive over to investigate. they normally don't shoot at the heros first because then either an important character is dead or the sniper looks unskilled.

Re: Villian for critique

Hmmm, hadn't fully considered the 9 second delay on the sound of that shot. Characters aren't THAT good at PER. But can a shot from two miles away be done with this character? 2 miles-10560ft-3800m (roughly)=1520 inches in game terms. (somebody check my math, I'm not the best) That's like a minus 18 to hit. Can this guy even make that shot? I hope he can but I'm not sure if his stats reflect that. If he does, any thoughts on a stupid descision he can make to alert the PCs? He is still a professional so nothing too crazy like hang a poster up or something. One PC does have a danger sense so I could make sure he hit's that roll.

Sociotard: Definately going to have him gunning for NPC's to start. The first adventure will have the PC's present at an assination by this guy. They are going to a meet and greet. during the photo shoot The PC's will witness the VIP's head explode followed (nine seconds later) by the gun shot. I'm hoping at that moment to spur the PC's in the direction of the snipers hideout. Have a little car chase through the streets and stage some thugs around to give the more combat oriented PC's some fun.

Any thoughts for the stupid mistake he can make? I want him to get away this time but leave some clues for future hits. Mainly interogating the thugs.
