Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters) Thanks Hermit. Though I think I messed up the one leg. The perspective is not right on that boot. It bothers me big time.
Hermit
Re: Duke (art and characters) Thanks Hermit. Though I think I messed up the one leg. The perspective is not right on that boot. It bothers me big time. I'll admit, I am not the best judge of art, I don't have proper knowledge of the ins or outs, and can't draw for spit. I know what I like, as they say and that's about it. I see what you mean by the leg, but only because you pointed it out to me. Other wise I would never have noticed. I did find his expression both intriguing and distracting, distracting because it's an unusual facial expression for a 'pose' by itself, intriguing because it makes me wonder just what situation he's found himself in. Storn
Re: Duke (art and characters) Yeah, his left leg (to our right) is a bit wonky. Hard angle to do with the knee and all... Iknow, I've struggled with that angle many times myself. but the art is crisp and clean, the design unusual. Nice bit of work. I like it. good job. btw: HIs right arm is too long. Totally outstretched and arm locked does the hand reach mid thigh. sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters) Blue, Thanks! QuestionMan, sure thing man. How has your vancouver game been going? Storn, I think I know what to do to fix that angle on that leg, but I'm of the mindset that it may be too much work to bother with and best just to press forward onto an new illustration. Yeah the design is a bit unusal. My player actually sent me a picture with that hero generator program that a lot of people use. The name of the flash program escapes me at the moment. I agree now that I am looking at it, his arm is too long. Do you ever find that when you are drawing that you tend to draw at an angle and then once you see it flat straight on after scanning it that many things are out of scale, or perspective. I think that because I draw at an angle that my perception is skewed and that tends to be the cause of a lot of distortion that I don't detect right away. Thanks for the advice dude. Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters) Alright I did make some amendments that were suggested. I didn't save over the first version so that people can compare. Do you think that looks better? Any feedback is always appretiated.
Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters) yamamura thanks! Actually I'm trying my best to stay away from some static facial expressions that I tend to get caught in by habit. Is the facial expression just really wrong, or do you think it just is not representing the image well?
freakboy6117
Re: Duke (art and characters) oh how sad. I can't berlive i can actually recognise all the heromachine componant now you mention it. i've goofed around with that thing way to much. the picture has really great colour work. The reflective surfaces areally come out well ( i wish i coudl do metals so well)
Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters) Thats the name of it! Hero Machine. You know I can tell you how to do the metal in this style. Actually this style of colouring is not my typical way I do illustrations. I've just been attempting to master it as of late since I have seen it in so many comic books now. Susano
Re: Duke (art and characters) The face is a bit off (to me) -- he looks more scared than... uhm... intense (that's the word), but the colors and style are fine by me. Good work!
Hermit
Re: Duke (art and characters) yamamura thanks! Actually I'm trying my best to stay away from some static facial expressions that I tend to get caught in by habit. Is the facial expression just really wrong, or do you think it just is not representing the image well? Mmm... more the latter than the former. I can understand wanting to try different facial expressions, but the background (With logo etc) behind him makes it seem like it SHOULD be a 'pose' or 'pin up' kind of page (I don't know the correct terms, but hopefully you know what I mean) but the facial expression makes it look like it is meant to be just one action panel among many, like he's discovered something that shocks or surprises him. It clashes a bit, and distracts, IMO. EDIT: And lest ye forget, overall I LIKE the art. I'm only nitpicking because I was invited to and even then my nitpicks are over my personal preferences rather than real knowledge of art (which I don't have)
Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters) Susano I see. Thanks for the input, I'm debating if I should change it. Hermit I am totally picking up on what you are saying. This drawing originally had a background to it that I never got around to colouring so I coped out by placing the logo. I may either get to work on the background during the week, or maybe just change the facial expression. And no worries about being nitpicking because the main reason I do like to post my work is so that I can improve upon it. I want to get better and the more eyes out there letting me know what should be done helps me think when I draw for the next time. Thanks again everyone. yamamura
Re: Duke (art and characters) Not to sound cliche or copping out, but I think Hermit hits the nail on the head about the face.
AlHazred
Re: Duke (art and characters) I actually like the face. Too many characters in today's comic books seem to have the stiff-upper-lip "noble" facial expression. I like to see a hero with something different. Based on the facial expression, I can practically hear this character saying "D'oh!" or "Uh, I thought you said cut the red wire..." And the HeroMachine art (which I use, too, because I'm too lazy to draw well) always has the same blank facial expression. Now I'm going to have to go into my character file and try to fiddle... Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters) Hero Clix eh! Thanks again everyone for all your feedback. Alright right now I am going to take some illustrations that I have already posted on the board and place them here in this thread because I'm moving files to another domain. Plus taking Storns brilliant idea of putting everything under one post makes it so much easier for myself to keep track of things.
Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters)During WWII Hitler attempted several times to create the ultimate soldier. The perfect being. Several scientists worked on an operation called Neue Ordnung during the war where they genetically grew humans. None were completely successful which ended up with termination of the samples. A group of freedom fighters with the Allies discovered the location of this secret project and laid siege to it. They destroyed the entire facility and burned all of the abominations to ash. One desperate scientist managed to get one sample away. Götz Schmidt was a deformed infant at the time. In secret he was raised by the scientist as his own son. Years passed until his time had come to seek vengeance upon those that destroyed his life's work, and so he sent Götz Schmidt now named Panzer out into the world to wreak havoc. In time the scientist learned that while Panzer was physically stronger then any normal man, his organs were deteriorating. Constantly having to be replaced, Panzer searches the globe for those freedom fighters in hopes to regain the original notes by the scientists of WWII for a cure to his dying form.Years later...Neue Ordnung or New Order was forged through a genetic process by splicing the genes of the super-human known as Panzer with that of willing host through artificial insemination. The reason for this attempt was to perfect and analyse the process that scientist had done years before and learn of a way to save Panzer. Four experiments were grown successfully at several different times. Each case developed a genetic flaw if you will. Faust's case he was born with a birth defect having no right hand. Later in life he was supplied with a mechanical fist. In Koloss's case she was born with four arms. Her size and weight were well beyond that of a normal human being. In Psychose's case she was mentally unstable. Prone to fits of psychotic tantrums that were projected through her superior mental capabilities. Hence her nightmares were unleashed upon whatever poor soul would be near by. Lastly Tragheit, A 12 year old that apears in his early 30's. His metabolism is so increased that he is aging rapidly.Instructed in a very confined enviroment they have been manipulated into the individuals that they are today. Full of rage and conditioning they are misguided and used for neferious crimes against humanity.(If the images are too big let me know and I'll make smaller versions)

greymankle
Re: Duke (art and characters) Good stuff Duke. Always nice to see art here at the boards. The four armed chick looks especially cool to me. Are you drawing digitally or free hand then scanning. What's the process here?
Duke
Re: Duke (art and characters) Grey the process is this. I use a .5 mechanical pencil to draw with first. I used to use regular to achieve that thick and thin quality line, but now I find it is much easier to use a mechanical pencil as it saves time on sharpening. HB for the lead, but depending on the time of year and time of day I change that up or down the scale. (temperature of course effects lead in the way it comes out) I like to illustrate on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol smooth. So far I have not found a paper that works better for inking. I use staedler pigment liner pens for inking. Since I work at 8 X 11 size usually I tend to use sizes .005 to 3 for widths. After that I use any old scanner and of course scan it in. Photoshop is used after that to balance out the white and black to get as much of a cutout as I can without it eating into my line work too badly. Then of course comes the laborious task of rendering the image in colour with photoshop. I use a regular mouse no fang dangled pens or anything like that. Colouring usually takes anywhere from 6 to 8 hours it seems. though if a background is added it would take a lot more time.

I can't believe that I missed this on the 6th, I am just happy I found it. Ohh rep on the way. Raven
