#14 SHAPLA (Bangladesh)

SHAPLA

Opi Rahman

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Opi Rahman opposed the capitulation of Bangladesh to Indian rule. She was among the thousands of protesters in Dhaka during 2002 but when the government agreed to the terms as set out by the Indian forces, the protesters seemed to lose spirit. Bangladesh was impoverished and those who stood against the decision soon found themselves targeted by pro-Indian forces. India promised to alleviate some of the hardships. People wanted food.

However, Opi continued to be defiant. Her family were poor, from the north of the country. She moved to Dhaka and took up residence at the Indian consulate among a group of ten protesters. One night the group were cleaned out by Harvest and overseen by local Bengali hero, Umbra. No one heard from the group again. The bodies were well hidden.

Opi woke up the next day in a fishing village 100km from Dhaka. She recalled the massacre the night before but had no mark on her body - even though she could still feel the organic blades of Harvest's arm-weapons. Somehow she had been saved... or born again.

The Assembly discovered her miracle soon after when she returned to Dhaka and demanded answers. She was caught on a CNN news camera and took the opportunity to retell the story of Harvest's killing spree. The interview lasted less than five minutes before Opi was dragged away and the journalists were ushered into a debriefing room.

Opi knew she was going to die.

When she saw the pistol she closed her eyes.

A lot of things happened next. She heard the gunshot, felt the pain... and then she was briefly aware of movement, like she was floating but moving a lot faster than the clouds she imagined in her mind.

The next day she awoke in the mountains.

It seemed that death was just a stage that Opi was destined to go through for her country, and that she now had the opportunity to pass through that 'undiscovered country' and come out on the other side on more than one occasion. The mountain people took her in and Opi decided that she needed to re-evaluate her options. It wasn't everyday that a person realised that they were effectively immortal.

The Assembly was too powerful. The Indian Government was too sprawling and invasive. They had agents everywhere and they had seemed to cement their position on the sub-continent. No foreign country was prepared to challenge India, and Bangladesh seemed quite content to become a protectorate. The local heroes who had been on the scene before the invasion had all disappeared.

Only Opi remained.

She dedicated herself to opposing the occupation. And she knew that she would have to oppose it one day at a time. She couldn't defeat the oppressors by herself: she needed the support of the world and her own people.

She put her life on the line frequently and confronted the Assembly on numerous occasions. All of the encounters ended in death or escape. Opi would either slip away and evade their scouts by moving amongst the frightened and oppressed people of Bangladesh, or she would be struck down dead and mystically transported to safety.

As Shapla she became a symbol for her people. And she also became a thorn in the side of the occupiers. To this day the Assembly has a team dedicated to hunting her down and neutralising her abilities. As Opi, she continues to operate as a peace worker amongst the people of Bangladesh. Indian authorities were never able to identify her real name which has allowed her to operate in two identities, even though both lives are still fraught with danger.

Personality

Opi is dedicated to bringing peace and prosperity to Bangladesh. She wants India out of her homeland, and more than that, she wants her people to enjoy a higher standard of living. Bangladesh has long suffered poverty and Opi hopes to turn that around by highlighting their plight to the international community. She has developed a sense of Fate about her, and knows that she is destined to die many times in her quest to bring about liberation.

She has a very pacifistic attitude, combining elements of Buddhism and Islam, although she is not really a strong follower of either faith. She is in the process of developing her own outlook on life and the universe. In fact, she has developed something of a following amongst the Bengali people, and through her courageous fighting and her altruistic healing abilities, Shapla has become a modern day prophet and role model.

Quote

"To strike me down is to strike at your own weakness."

Powers

Shapla possesses a remarkable healing ability which is enhanced by a fail-safe teleportational twist. When her body begins to shut down and fail her physical form vanishes and reforms far, far away from the immediate danger. She believes it is a form of reincarnation, but it is actually an uber ability which is triggered by near-death experiences.

Interestingly, her rebirth does not include any sign of injury or disfigurement. Her body returns to its pristine state.

In addition to her healing ability Shapla is an accomplished practitioner of karate and uses her powers to oppose the enemies of Bangladesh - although she does more good work behind the scenes than in direct confrontations.

Appearance

Shapla is a strong minded woman whose strength has infused her body. She is always confident and has her eyes forward. She never looks away or bows to fear, and she also possesses infectious courage so that those who stand beside her are able to share in her confidence. As Shapla, she wears a loose fitting backless white blouse and showcases the immaculate white water lily tattoo which graces her back. She wears black pants and boots and hides her identity with a black and white mask.

As Opi Rahman, peace activist, she wears jeans and t-shirts which are comfortable and hard wearing.

When she uses her healing powers there is a scent of lily in the air and the affected area usually glows white for a brief time.

Notes

Shapla is the only public figure opposing the occupation of Bangladesh by the Indian Government in Uberworld. She could approach the PCs with a request for help or else she could be played as an antagonist. Perhaps the Indian government pays the PCs to neutralsie her.

A way to get Shapla into the PCs campaign would be to have her wake up in their neighbourhood after being 'killed' again. Her powers may have received a boost from a particularly nasty near-death experience, and propelled her further than normal. She could wake up in the USA, Australia, Britain or any country. Coupled with her sudden appearance could be temporary amnesia. The PCs may have to work out who she is... and why members of The Assembly eventually turn up to silence her.

I wasn't sure how to create a lone hero in a country dominated by such a powerful force as The Assembly, so I opted for a serial reincarnator (or whatever you'd like to call it). She is a Patriot and stands up for her country, but she cannot possibly survive long and is frequently 'killed off' in public, only to reappear in relative safety some far away place.

Shapla means water lily, by the way.

#15 ZODIAC AGENCY (Barbados)

The Zodiac Agency was established to provide security to corporations and private individuals who did not trust the authorities and especially uberhumans. It has since widened its approach to include security work, retrieval work and even its own in-house experimental work such as when the Agency kidnapped Olympians during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in an attempt to activate the ubergene in its test subjects. The Agency is well respected amongst its former employers and operates in simultaneous operations across North America, Western Europe and most recently in Australia. While it works for employers in most cases, the Zodiac Agency is also interested in its own pursuits.

This is a criminal organisation based in Barbados but operating throughout the Western world. The location of the base is not known, and if it were to become public knowledge the Astronomer would move immediately. Secrecy is important to the Agency.

The six members will follow...

#15 ZODIAC AGENTS (Barbados)

ZODIAC AGENTS

Various

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

The Zodiac Agency was established to provide security to corporations and private individuals who did not trust the authorities and especially uberhumans. It has since widened its approach to include security work, retrieval work and even its own in-house experimental work such as when the Agency kidnapped Olympians during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in an attempt to activate the ubergene in its test subjects. The Agency is well respected amongst its former employers and operates in simultaneous operations across North America, Western Europe and most recently in Australia. While it works for employers in most cases, the Zodiac Agency is also interested in its own pursuits.

A variety of mercenaries and special agents work for the Zodiac Agency. While they come from different backgrounds all agents share a distrust for uberhumans which is the foundation of the Agency. This distrust is based on either a pre-existing belief or a reaction to the indoctrination process organised by the Astrologer.Zodiac agents work in a variety of areas and capacities. They are capable of low-key assignments as well as anti-Uber response teams in which case they will don the Zodiac Battle Armour. The Agency has built its reputation on its 'pure human' agents and its ability to provide a security force equivalent to the power level of most ubers.

Personality

Generally the agents work for Zodiac because of the financial rewards, the thrill of espionage and security work, or perhaps because of a deep seated hatred for uberhumans. Each agent has their own reasons for joining the agency, although personal agendas are frowned upon.

Quote

"It's nothing personal, just business."

Powers

Zodiac has developed an array of high technology devices and weapon systems, the most impressive of which are the Zodiac Energy Pistol and the Battle Armour. Each agent has access to these items, as well as conventional arms.

Appearance

Zodiac agents come from a variety of backgrounds, but all wear a standard Zodiac uniform which is composed of a hardy body armour. The uniform is black with white trimming and a constellation on the left breast, depending on the agent's group. There are always twelve active groups in the agency, named after the twelve star signs of the Zodiac. The Zodiac Battle Armour is a heavier power armour which enhances the wearer's strength and provides even more defence against all kinds of weaponry: human and uber. It is composed of reflective metal plates over a thicker black armour. The Armour includes a visored helmet which hides the wearer's identity.

#15 LADY LUCK (Barbados)

ladyluck.jpg

LADY LUCK

Delia de Luc

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Delia Benson married a wealthy French media magnate and left Barbados at the age of seventeen. Three years later she was a wealthy widow with too much money and a residence in Monaco. She began to frequent the casinos and won as much as she lost - but whether she won or not, she drew an inordinate amount of attention and became known as Lady Luck. Her reputation grew, although her wealth dwindled.

One night she met the Astrologer and was convinced to leave Europe and return to Barbados where the Astrologer had established his Zodiac Agency. Delia agreed and became the Astrologer's assistant, bodyguard and sometime lover.

Personality

Delia is beautiful but cunning. She is self-centered and self-serving, although she does have an undeniable affection and loyalty for the Astrologer. She enjoys the thrill of casinos, of chance encounters and coincidence. She is still young in many ways, although there is an undeniable hardness in some aspects of her personality: most notably her lack of mercy and charity.

Quote

"This could be your lucky night."

Powers

Delia de Luc is a regular human with some martial arts training and a dedication to self-preservation. She has shown an unusual ability to outplay probability in casinos and her luck sometimes affects other aspects of her life too.

Appearance

Delia is tall and elegant, oftentimes dominating a room. She has been hired by the Astrologer to be his inconspicuous bodyguard, although her beauty is more dangerous than her martial prowess.

#15 SIGN (Barbados)

sign.jpg

SIGN

Unrevealed

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

The Astrologer discovered the pliable alien entity which became known as Sign during a dimensional-hopping journey with Prospero. The entity was young and easily manipulated. When the Astrologer brought it back to Earth it became a pet project. As it developed an understanding of its new dimension and abilities, it became to mimic the forms of the Astrologer's zodiac. The Astrologer was impressed with the entity's loyalty and willingness to please, and when the Zodiac Agency was launched, Sign became the organisation's number one operative enforcer.

Personality

Sign is an alien entity and has shown only a limited range of human emotions and reactions. It appears to be mechanical and resists much human interaction, although it has shown unflinching loyalty to the Astrologer.

Quote

"Sign will not allow that."

Powers

Sign is an alien which has been trained to become a walking arsenal by the Astrologer. Its form has always been malleable, and through time it has developed twelve distinct forms each one representing a sign of the Zodiac. Each Sign has distinct powers and abilities, although all of them are highly resistant to injury and posses enhanced physical prowess.

Appearance

Sign is an amorphous being from a dimension which Prospero and Astrologer visited several years ago. Its natural state is ever-changing, but since arriving in the Earth Dimension it has taken on a silver humanoid form with a featureless face. Astrologer has trained Sign to assume multiple forms, each representing one of the Zodiac signs.

The Aries form is silver and well muscled with the head of a ram and glowing red eyes. The Taurus form is larger and looks like a Minotaur, again with glowing red eyes. The Gemini form is a regular humanoid with two faces looking forward and backward. The faces had eyes but no other features. The Cancer form is thicker and hunched, dominated by a large silver shell and a menacing claw on its right hand. The Leo form appears to be a large sized silver lion. The Virgo form is the most human like and appears as a Caucasian woman with mousy brown hair and doe-like brown eyes. She wears a Zodiac Agency uniform and would look human except for an unnerving strangeness about her. The Libra form is a winged humanoid with sharp raptor-like claws. It is very lithe and menacing, with glowing red eyes. The Scorpio form is a thick-set humanoid similar to Sign's regular form, although there is a large scorpion attached to its back. Upon command the scorpion can separate itself and operate independently. The Sagittarius form appears to be a featureless humanoid like the regular form, although it has a silver bow which can be formed out of its body. The Capricorn form appears to be a silver-skinned young man with goat's legs in the tradition of a satyr. The Aquarius form is a shapeless pool of liquid which can move and form itself into other liquid-shapes. The Pisces form is a silver-scaled humanoid with large black eyes, a fish-mouth and gills.

Notes

Sign is an alien entity which has the ability to take on various forms: in this case the signs of the Zodiac. His origin is unknown but is another dimension once visited by Prospero and Astrologer.

Sign is a kind of one-man army, able to change forms to take on superheroes, although a quirk of his abilities is that he can only change his forms in the order of the Zodiac. So he must start as Aries and then become Taurus and then Gemini and so on.

#15 ARCANE II (Barbados)

arcane.jpg

ARCANE II

Archibald Kane

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

The grandson of the first Arcane, Archie Kane had a modest crime fighting career in the 1980s before disappearing suddenly after a battle with the Astrologer - one of his grandfather's nemeses. He was most well known for his fights against mystic threats but never managed to break into the mainstream superhero crowd, often ridiculed as the 'Ghost Buster'. He was always a B-list hero at best.

He returned several years later as a loyal retainer of the Astrologer, seemingly bound to his former nemesis through powerful and corrupting magic. Arcane has since become the commander in charge of the various Zodiac teams across the world. He never talks about the missing years or why he is now working for the man who was credited with his demise, and it is clear that the Arcane who reappeared in the 1990s is a much darker, more disturbed man than the one who was known as the 'Ghost Buster'.

As Commander of the Zodiac Agents, Kane is ruthless and a little intimidating. He always defers to Astrologer and gives little thought to his own safety. He favours his red gem-eye when working for Zodiac within its installations and reluctantly covers it up in public. His eye was lost during his time in dimensional exile and is reported to be in the Astrologer's possession, possibly as a way to maintain his dominance over Arcane.

Personality

The current Arcane is cold and ruthless, seemingly devoid of humanity. He commands with utmost authority and thinks nothing of life, death and all states of interrogation and torture in between. There is no hint of his previous personality which was reportedly more fun-loving and a little hapless. The modern Arcane is hard and uncompromising.

Quote

"Contracts define our approach. If the client has paid for a service, we provide the service. No questions asked and no bonuses added."

Powers

Arcane has inherited some of his grandfather's mystical abilities, although no where near as advanced or as diverse. During his hero days, Arcane was able to create magical handcuffs, step through space using magical stepping disks as well as a magical sense which allowed him to identify things of a magic nature.

The modern Arcane possesses a cursed gem in his left eye socket which enables him to perceive the world beyond human senses, as well as to drain a person's soul and project magical energy.

As a member of Zodiac, Arcane is able to use their advanced technology and weaponry, and usually carries an energy rifle and wears the standard Zodiac body armour.

Appearance

Arcane has chalk white skin, an eye patch and a vaguely Satanic-looking tattoo on his bald head. He is not a very approachable kind of person and radiates danger. Behind his eye patch is a mystic gem called the Fire Gem Of Horus and looks like a ruby wedged into his eye socket. As the commander of the Zodiac Agents, Arcane wears a standard Zodiac uniform which is composed of a hardy body armour. The uniform is black and dark red with gold trimming and a constellation on his chest, depending on the agent's group. Arcane's constellation is simply a single star, reflecting his primary status among the agents.

#15 PROSPERO (Barbados)

prospero.jpg

PROSPERO

Percival Saint John

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Percival Saint John was always an outcast. He was odd in school, bizarre in university and utterly unemployable as an adult. He turned to esoteric pursuits and then arcane ones, hoping to find acceptance amongst the outsiders of the world. His uncle was a member of a cult and Percival felt that he could follow in the tradition, but his uncle was small fry and when Percival attempted to join he only ended up tearing the cult apart - amidst a swarm of demonic wasps. Percival survived and said nothing of the disaster to his family. Not that they would have listened to him. Even they wanted to see the back of Percival.

He travelled to India, South Africa and finally to America where he settled in the South. He began to search for mystical knowledge in his usual haphazard way until one day he stumbled across the personal effects of Mangudai: an assistant to the most powerful sorcerer on the planet. Mangudai had moved to America after his master had died and had himself died several decades later. Percival read through the magical tomes with utter abandon, never having experienced such power in his meandering quest. As he read the books the world around him shifted.

It was 1988.

Dallas was never the same again. Percival unleashed a horde of demons upon the American city which eventually transformed most of the city as well. Percival escaped the demonic horde and hid away in an installation which turned out to belong to the Astrologer. As the American heroes and mystic community battled the demons, Percival hid away with Astrologer and played chess to pass the time.

When the battle had been won, Percival and Astrologer decided to work on a plan of world domination. At least, that was Percival's take on the situation, although Astrologer was more interested in gaining wealth and knowledge. Percival read the books, Prospero's Books, and managed to stumble through further misadventures through space and time. He visited dimensions, destroying just as many as he left undisturbed. One of these dimensions belonged to Sycorax. Her entire dimension was destroyed by Prospero's visit. And it wasn't the only one.

Prospero still manages to get pulled in to weird situations but always seems to survive untouched. He is a bearer of bad omens and destroyer of worlds, but underneath he is just a bumbling old man.

Personality

Prospero has never been lucky. He has had more downs than ups in his life, and never seems to enjoy life for any extended period of time. Since gaining excessive power with his magic books this weirdness has intensified. He has unleashed hordes of demons, destroyed dimensions and caused mayhem across the globe: but he actually means no harm. He is a gentle soul most of the time, although he does possess a nasty streak - especially when he becomes jealous.

Quote

"Give in to your dark side and come and play."

Powers

Prospero is a regular human who has stumbled across books of unimaginable power. When he reads from the books he is able to produce a wide variety of magical effects, mostly linked to demonic spells. He is able to transform people and inanimate objects, but they always change into demonic forms. He is able to manipulate objects remotely, throwing them at opponents or wrapping them up in strong bonds. He also possesses a thick ugly coat which provides him with protection as well as access to remote 'pocket dimensions' where he stores items, most notably his books.

Appearance

Prospero is an old man with sparkling (almost insane) eyes and a wrinkled face. He is slightly hunched and seems harmless enough, although he wears a satanic-looking amulet which can be disarming. He is always shrouded with his thick ugly coat which makes him look like a homeless man. It smells and looks like it is a hundred years old (not far from the truth). Under the coat he sometimes wears spandex as a way to convince himself that he could have been a superhero if he wanted to. It has become something of a joke amongst the Zodiac Agency, although Prospero remains clueless.

#15 ASTROLOGER (Barbados)

astrologer.jpg

THE ASTROLOGER

Adam Decker

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Adam Decker started his professional life as a biomechanical engineer with the American government, working on surveillance systems for uberhumans during a period where the US Government began to worry about the prospect of an exploding uber population. The idea was to develop a microchip which would be inserted in uberhumans and allow a central computer to track their location at all times.

The project was not well received and lost funding within a year. Decker found himself facing an uncertain future.

And then a down-and-out mystic stumbled across a set of magical books in Dallas, unleashing a horde of demons upon the city. The incident became known as 'The Demonification of Dallas'. The demonic incursion began to transform the city as well and lasted nearly two weeks before being controlled by a variety of superheroes and the magical community. Decker's family were killed during this time: something which he has never forgiven.

During this period, Decker's research facility was transformed and his surveillance equipment was irrevocably altered. It became prescient and required the life force of humans to operate. At this point Decker was also slightly affected by the curse unleashed upon Dallas, and decided to keep the machine for himself, having no idea that his family had been killed. He drained the lives of his co-workers to power up the machine and then barricaded himself in the installation, scouring the globe for information which he gathered like a kleptomaniac.

After the demons were driven out of Dallas, Decker's secret installation was discovered by the slightly embarrassed mystic who had started the demonic influence: Prospero. The two men decided to hide out together and played many games of chess. It was during this time that Decker regained his sanity and realised he was in possession of a powerful machine which he could use for personal gain.

He organised the Zodiac Agency: an organisation which began as an information retrieval service (utilising the Astrologer Computer), but eventually moved into security work and their various own agendas. Astrologer heads the Agency while Prospero remains a close associate.

Personality

Astrologer is meticulous and cold. He has no concern for the lives that fuel his computer, and a growing hatred for uberhumans who he blames for the death of his family in Dallas. He is a professional who has achieved great success in his chosen field: the head of a mercenary organisation. He excels in his field and yet he still feels the need to outmaneuver other mercenary organisations, most notably C.L.A.W.

Although he has formed a friendship with Prospero, he secretly feels that Percival is a fool and believes that one day in the future he will most likely have to kill him. The realisation does not disturb him, however. It is, after all, just business.

Quote

"The signs are there for all to see, but it takes a trained mind to see through the obvious."

Powers

Astrologer possesses a demonic machine known as the Astrologer's Computer which allows him to view the world from his secret installation in Barbados. The price for such power is human life, and the Astrologer manages to accrue disposable lives for that purpose, whether it be one of his agents, interns, visiting officials or slaves.

During his early years as the Astrologer, Decker found four rings of power each one commanding a different element: fire, earth, water and air. He has shown no more interest in gaining further magic items and prefers knowledge to power.

Appearance

Astrologer is a fit man in his fifties with dark skin, a shaved head with white beard, and an intense gaze. He wears an armoured costume at all times to provide protection against unforeseen dangers. The costume is dark maroon with a white lining and black pants. He wears two rings on each hand: water and fire on his right hand, and earth and air on his left.

Notes

The Astrologer's Computer has the potential to discover secrets about the PCs, but it also has the opportunity to discover secrets that would benefit the PCs. With that in mind Astrologer might actually be sought out to provide help in solving crimes, although his price would be high - and include a favour in return.

#16 WHITE RUSSIAN (Belarus)

It's been a hectic week, but here is the latest character from around the world. He's called the White Russian and he is a former villain who got a presidential pardon and opened a bar. Now he's losing his mind and skewering minor criminals on the street. Will he turn back into a villain? Only time (and your campaigns) will tell.

whiterussian.jpg

WHITE RUSSIAN

Vladimir Mikhnevich Akhramchuk

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

During the 1980s, Akhramchuk was one of the Old Guard, four villains who opposed the Russian government. He had become an 'ice monster' after a military debacle in Archangel involving a nuclear submarine. Akhramchuk went insane and became the White Russian, going on to terrorise Russia for much of the next five years. The Old Guard disbanded and Akhramchuk regained his sanity, although he was still stuck as a creature made entirely of ice. He managed to disappear from public view, while also working on a contractual basis for covert sections of the Russian government, making enemies with the upstart team of pseudo-terrorists known as Oktober.

Akhramchuk took the opportunity to retire when Belarus gained independence and secured a pardon from both the Russian and Belarusian presidents. He opened a bar where he continues to work, occasionally becoming involved in uber activity, although he mostly follows his own agenda, slipping from one side of the legal line to the other.

Most recently he re-entered the uber world as a vicious vigilante, murdering criminals who dared to come near his 'territory'. These actions have caused some concern in Belarus and Russia, although neither government is prepared to oppose Akhramchuk openly, fearing he will turn back into his villainous role. Besides, so far the White Russian has only murdered criminals.

Personality

Hot head, cold heart.

Akhramchuk is currently teetering on the edge of sanity and is prone to periods of extreme violence. He feels that he is losing control and hates himself, although he will never admit his lack of control to anyone. Since leaving the Old Guard he has been alone. No one has befriended him and he feels more isolated than ever.

He opened a bar in the hopes of reclaiming his humanity but apart from the odd night when he feels his heart warmed, Akhramchuk is still as removed from society as he ever was.

Quote

"Dare you to stain my roads with the blood of innocents?"

Powers

The White Russian is a creature of ice, thanks to a combination of a late-blooming ubergene and an explosion on board a nuclear submarine. His body is a biological-ice which enables him to live but which does not create any kind of body heat. He is able to extend parts of his body, most notably his arms, which can then form into hard ice barbs or spears. The White Russian is ruthless and will skewer opponents quickly using his ice spears and leave them to bleed to death on the street.

Appearance

The White Russian is tall and spiky. His body is made of ice and often changes according to the environment and surrounding temperatures. On particularly cold days he can appear thicker and heavier, while on warm days he seems to become more gaunt and angular. His body is rough and sharp to touch. His head is especially pointed with ice spikes protruding beyond his forehead. He appears to be a kind of ice giant, and has had difficulty in trying to earn a living since receiving pardons from the president and trying to 'go straight'. No one seems to trust a man who looks like he has stepped out of a children's fairy tale - especially one who has a habit of flying into rages and skewering people.

#17 LE HOMME JOUET (Belgium)

toyman.jpg

LE HOMME JOUET (TOY MAN)

Jean-Alain Trezeguet

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

The son of a strong unionist, Jean-Alain Trezeguet entered his working life with his eyes open. He knew that employers would sometimes exploit the workers, but he also knew that there would be men, like his father, who would stand up for individual worker's rights. It came as some shock to discover that his father was actually corrupt and working for the employers he was supposed to be investigating. Jean-Alain informed on his father, the results of which sent the elder Trezeguet to prison. Jean-Alain was shunned by his co-workers and his family. His great start in life had already gone off the rails. Without many alternatives he left Belgium, travelling to Britain where he hoped to start afresh. It took him years to establish himself.

He was hired by Archer Electronics, a subsidiary of Sterling, and began working in the toy department, much to his embarrassment. One day he was asked to participate in a new development within the company and he agreed - anything to get out of the toy department. He joined six other workers and began working on a shrinking ray. At first he assumed it was still connected to the toy industry and inwardly groaned, but he soon realised that the other men involved in the programme were from different areas, predominantly from military and space engineering backgrounds. Jean-Alain wasn't sure whether to be impressed or fearful but he vowed to keep his own background secret and passed himself off as a talented mechanical engineer. No one pursued the story.

When the shrinking ray was near completion, Jean-Alain and the others were met by Sterling himself who turned out to be rather more friendly than his profile suggested and even took time to ask about Jean-Alain's family back in Brussels (not that he had any idea what his family had been up to in the past five years).

Jean-Alain didn't realise it at the time, but Sterling was merely saying goodbye to the scientists, all of whom had now become dispensable and dangerous. They had developed a shrinking ray which Sterling would use as secret leader of T.I.T.A.N. and all evidence needed to be erased.

As the device was being packed up into a truck, something happened which saved Jean-Alain's life. One of Sterling's men made a mistake and opened fire at the scientists before the set time which caused a panic. The truck driver accelerated but ran over a coolant hose and careened into a wall where it exploded along with half of the warehouse they were in. In the extreme heat, the shrinking ray activated and shot random beams across the room. Jean-Alain was struck by one of the beams and as he scrambled about in the firestorm he managed to avoid being shot or overcome by smoke.

As with most of these experiences, Jean-Alain walked away from the inferno a changed man. He felt that everything had gone wrong because of him, that he was the weakest link and just a toy maker trying to make it big rubbing shoulders with military experts. He didn't seem to notice that he was the sole survivor or that he was now forty centimeters tall.

When the shrinking ray wore off Jean-Alain returned to London but vowed never to return to the toy factory. He hid from visitors (although he never received any) and paid all of his bills via the internet. Gradually he regained a little confidence and decided to try the whole working life thing again. It failed miserably, and as soon as he became frustrated by the long lines at the employment agencies he would snap and shrink to the size of a toy. People laughed at him and he would lose his temper and stamp his feet. They would laugh even louder.

One night he had had enough. A rude woman in an apartment below his refused to turn down her stereo and Jean-Alain found himself shrinking in a fury. He stormed down to her door and attacked her boyfriend, stabbing him with a fork. The woman threw money and valuables at him so he would go away and Jean-Alain found that he could harness his anger to make easy money. He returned the following night and took more money from the woman.

With a little money in the bank his mind turned to his former colleagues and their military background. Perhaps, he thought, he could harness his toy making genius with their military applications. He raided one of Sterling's outer London installations and stole plans for weaponry and then returned to Brussels where he knuckled down and designed toy weapons. He had already stylised himself as one of the new wave of superhuman criminals. It would enable him to strike back at those who laughed at him as well as prove to the world just how big he was.

Personality

The Toy Man is something of a showman and enjoys the persona he has created for himself, although his hold on reality shifts every day. He has a growing hatred for children and all things cute and cuddly, although he has regularly developed such 'soft toys' into nasty weapons to spread chaos and fear. He is growing more obsessed every day with his genius and his passion for creating violence out of childish things.

However, underneath the flourishes and big speeches lies a trembling little man. He is still uncertain whether to embrace his toy making skills or hide them, wondering whether he is getting the respect he so desperately wants. To this end he regularly meets with a therapist online under the online name: Big Al.

Quote

"You'll see things from a different perspective once you get to know me. I have a way of making everything look oh so much bigger than you'd expect!"

Powers

The Toy Man has been affected by Sterling's shrinking ray so that his body can now shrink on its own, although he can only shrink to 40cm - no more and no less. He is also able to shrink other people and objects after a series of painful experiments he conducted on himself, although he doesn't usually exercise this ability as its results are still very uncertain.

In addition to his ability to shrink to the size of an action figure, Toy Man also has access to innumerable gadgets all of which are modelled on toys - usually providing lethal effects in the guise of innocent toys.

Appearance

Jean-Alain Trezeguet is a man in his fifties who has not enjoyed most of his life. His eyes are weary and his nose is blotched and red. His hair is black, streaked with grey and kept short and when he is in his Toy Man identity he wears a black coat, pants and cape over a starched white shirt. On his head he wears an immaculate top hat. Toy Man has access to advanced technologies and has weaved a strong protective fiber into his clothes which protect him from most injuries.

Notes

The Toy Man is a themed-villain and shouldn't be taken too seriously once his plots have been uncovered and his goons taken care of. He will crumble into a heap (or explode into a rage which should be easy to contain by your average PC Team). The picture is obviously based on the Penguin and I'd like to think that Toy Man fits into that genre alongside DC Comics' themed-based villains.

#18 MAYA (Belize - Future Era)

maya.jpg

MAYA

Maya Saritama

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Note: Maya exists in an alternate future which is shared by the hero Tempus. Events from that time period may change depending on the present. The current year for Maya is 2099, nineteen years after the retrovirus was unleashed.

When the ubergene retrovirus spread across the world in 2080, things changed rapidly. After a year only a small number of ubers had survived alongside those heroes and villains who gained their powers from other sources such as an alien heritage, mystical knowledge or artifacts. The world had come to rely on super heroes such as the Sentinels to protect them from internal and external threats, so when the Aztec God Huitzilopachtli returned to our dimension at this weak point in time he had little trouble establishing himself in South America, casually usurping governments. However, Huitzilopachtli was thwarted in his attempts to take over the entire world by Set, an Egyptian God, who was raised by his faithful priestess Nepythys using the moment of confusion to bring her Master back to Earth.

At first Huitzilopachtli resisted Set's incursion but he was outmatched and reluctantly agreed to serve Set, as did the God Ganesh who had established himself as ruler of Asia. The Triumvirate took control of Earth with Set in the highest throne and Huitzilopachtli and Ganesh ruling to each side.

Huitzilopachtli transformed the Americas into his own image, bringing back the architecture of the Ancient Aztecs and Mayans, while Set transformed Africa and Europe into replicas of Ancient Egypt and Ganesh transformed Asia into his own Hindu image.

The Americas became a source of hedonistic pursuits. The drug trade was increased to supply the world's new leaders and Central America especially became known as The Harvest Lands. Huitzilopachtli chose Maya to oversee the Harvest Lands and she accepted the role with pride.

Maya was young when Huitzilopachtli first took control of the Americas and was drawn into one of his many harems, but she soon learned to survive and thrive above the other courtesans. She killed rivals and blackmailed superiors, always marching towards her goal of becoming free and powerful. She was granted her wish when Huitzilopachtli himself witnessed her murder of one of his priests, and rewarded her with a place at his side. For six months she stayed with Huitzilopachtli and learned about the new world.

Humans were servants. The few remaining ubers and other so-called heroes were the enemy and were hunted down for sport by the elite. Maya saw an opportunity to live like Gods and insinuated herself further into Huitzilopachtli's confidence sometimes even influencing the God more than his advisors. When she was appointed Priestess there were many rumblings amongst the priesthood but most people were prepared for the news. When she was then promoted to High Priestess and given control over the Harvest Lands, there were some public protests.

Maya silenced her critics with death, even ordering the assassination of one of Huitzilopachtli's oldest advisors.

The God was pleased.

And so Maya earned a reputation as being almost as bloodthirsty and ambitious as her Master.

Personality

Maya was a regular girl when her world was invaded by ancient Gods, but rather than accept her fate as a servant she fought back in the only way she knew. She climbed the ladder of opportunity, discarding friends and alliances as she climbed higher until she came into the presence of Huitzilopachtli himself. She has seen great power and craves it for herself. She knows that Huitzilopachtli is able to make her immortal and lusts after such power, although she is growing envious of others in the God's inner circle and wonders whether she has been played for a fool by her Master.

Maya is ruthless and cruel. She enjoys the blood sports that frequently entertain the masses in the Americas and actively encourages those around her to kill to succeed. She has survived several assassination attempts.

Quote

"Loyalty is nothing without ambition. Seek to usurp and you shall profit greatly."

Powers

Maya is a keen strategist and manipulative woman who has trained herself to become one of Huitzilopachtli's most trusted advisors. She seems to possess an uncanny ability to perceive other people's motives and always seems to be one step ahead of her enemies.

Appearance

Maya is beautiful which is what allowed her to succeed during the early years of Huitzilopachtli's rule. Her beauty is enhanced by scars which she has earned along her violent rise to authority and she bares them with pride and as a warning to others not to cross her. She wears gold as is the new custom of Huitzilopachtli's rule and is never without bodyguards who are all naked to the waist and physical beautiful and strong.

Notes

Maya exists in an alternate future which means she probably won't come into contact with your PCs unless you plan on slipping through time or she somehow manages to come back to 'our time'. Her future is an interesting one: ruled by three Gods who have come to Earth after nearly all of the superhumans have died because of a virus.

It has a lot of elements similar to Marvel's future timelines - you know, Age of Apocalypse, Days of Future Past etc etc. The PCs would be fugitives in a future world where a ruling class is re-living a decadent era while the regular humans are being oppressed.

#19 RADA TEAM (Benin)

Note: This is my African superhero team based in Benin with seven members. I hope I don't roll up another team for a while.

radateamlogo.jpg

RADA TEAM

Team Page (HTM)

Background

The Rada are a race of spiritual beings from the Rada Dimension and have been historically linked to the vodun religion of Benin, and the modern voodoo traditions of the Caribbean. One of their number, Yemanja, realised that their spiritual homeland on Earth was in danger. The Sons of Set had planned to take control of Benin and the well of mystical energy which was based below the city of Ouidah. The priestess Nepythys believed she could harness the energy to bring her Master back to the Earth Dimension. The other Rada refused to intervene which left Yemanja with little choice but to turn her back on her family and travel to Earth by herself.

Once there she enlisted the help of the local hero Mouritala Adjamossi. Yemanja wasn't prepared to care so much for the humans, but found herself falling in love with Mouritala: an experience she had never felt before. As they worked to create a superhero team which could withstand the full force of the Sons of Set, the two co-founders of Rada Team began an illicit affair, for Mouritala was already married. Yemanja wasn't too concerned about the complication as she wasn't fully aware of human emotions and saw nothing wrong with a bit of fun.

When the team was ready, Yemanja led them to Ouidah and brought the powers of her family to bear on the heroes. Each one was blessed by a different spirit: and with the energy they all took on a new name representing the connection they had with the rada.

After successfully defending the city the team remained together and became an established force for crime fighting in the region. They are constantly harassed by the Sons of Set but have broadened their interests beyond the battle currently going on within northern Africa.

Area of Operations

The Rada Team is based in Porto-Novo in Benin but have provided assistance to neighbouring countries as well as moving into the Rada Dimension on occasion. It is possible that the team will be called to the Caribbean as there exists a strong connection between Benin and the New World.

Goals

Yemanja brought the heroes together to safeguard the spiritual home of the vodun, Ouidah from the incursion of the Sons of Set. Since succeeding in resisting the incursion, the Rada Team has provided assistance in preventing natural and human disasters in the region. They are all dedicated to safeguarding their country as well as the ensuring the welfare of Africa.

Reputation

The Rada Team is very well regarded in Benin and all members are welcomed by the people as celebrities. Outside of Benin, their reputation is ambiguous. Some consider them little more than zealots and practitioners of voodoo, but there is a growing admission that the team is doing good deeds across western Africa. Beyond Africa the team is not known at all.

Notes

The great evil which threatened Benin in this case was the Sons of Set, but that group could be easily substituted for any villain organisation, even the nefarious VIPER.

#19 EZILI (Benin)

ezili.jpg

EZILI

Oni

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Oni always knew that she was intelligent and from a very young age she learned to speak the human language and began to understand their misguided ways. Unfortunately for her, Oni was born into a zoo in South Africa, and even though she proved to be intelligent enough to converse with the keepers and even beat them at chess, Oni was not released. Her story spread across the world and drew media attention and debate about the treatment of so-called uber-apes. Oni was actually a test case run by the United Nations and was eventually freed once apartheid was abolished and the new government was able to accede to the wishes of the UN resolution.

Oni was taken to Switzerland where she met other uber primates who had fled persecution from family and humans. She met Jafari Banana, who would later become Agent Ape and she met his best friend, Jono. Oni was sponsored through university in Bern and later attended medical school in the Paris, becoming the first registered ape medical practitioner. After graduating she and Jono were married and moved to the Netherlands where they worked closely with the United Nations.

She worked for many years as a medical expert in uberhuman and uberprimate fields, including a close association with Dr Saul Numen and even the Witch Doctor of Azambia. When he husband died of heart disease she decided to return to Africa where she planned to use her skills and connections to improve the quality of life for apes and humans.

She was in Porto-Novo when the Sons of Set attacked and found herself joining the newly formed Rada Team to force them back, playing a key role in the conflict. She was asked to stay in Benin and join the team, and since the death of her husband had left her a little uncertain about the direction of her life, she agreed.

Oni was given the name Ezili and has been a calming influence on the fledgling team, taking on the role of Den Mother which she so often does.

Personality

Oni believes the best in all things and is never upset or disappointed as she can always see potential for goodness. She tends to mother humans who she usually views as misguided and a little clumsy, although she treats all life as precious. As Ezili, Oni promotes the ideas of peace and love which have become her catch cry as she embarks upon a mission to improve the medical and lifestyle conditions of Africa's people and primates. She remains based in Benin but frequently travels to other countries to offer aid and assistance. She has recently begun working with Sanctity in organising aid to the refugees of Africa's northern countries which have secretly fallen under the control of the Sons of Set.

Quote

"Let me give you a big hug. You'll feel better."

Powers

As well as being an intelligent ape, Oni is also able to establish mental communication with other animals and people. Once a connection is made, usually through skin-to-skin contact, she is able to unlock positive emotions in people which usually manifests as love.

Appearance

Oni is an albino ape with white fur which appears a light grey, and pink eyes. She is a very large ape and grew quickly as a young ape, towering over her family in the first three years. She is powerfully built but is one of the most gentle creatures on the planet. She wears a red cross and a red crescent symbol on her arm bands signifying her connections to both organisations, and has a symbol of Africa on her belt which reminds her of her mission to the people and primates of her home continent. She wears a golden ear ring in her left ear which was a marriage gift from her late husband.

Notes

Oni is a chance for me to create an intelligent ape character which was cool. When I decided to use the name Ezili (spirit of love) as my mentalist, it was a bit quirky to make her an ape rather than the usual 'vamp' which was my first reaction. I'm glad I went with Oni, who turned out to be a pacifist with connections with the United Nations and the history of human-ape relations.

#19 DAMBALA (Benin)

dambala.jpg

DAMBALA

Omolara 'Lara' Codjo

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Recruited to join MI6 midway through her university degree in toxicology, Lara never did manage to complete her studies but never looked back or had regrets. Initially, MI6 wanted to use Lara to infiltrate Beninese dissidents in England following a movement to return the country to its Marxist-Leninist past, but Lara became something of a maverick, creating her own assignments but more importantly producing results. She fashioned herself on the action stars of television and figured everything would work out for her in the end - even when she was captured or tortured, she never gave in to despair.

One mission went very close to breaking her, though, and involved the villain team Empire who had discovered her identity and kidnapped her hoping to use her as collateral against MI6. Empire kept her isolated in northern Africa far from her allies and closer to her enemies than she would ever guess. The Empire base was over run with agents of Set, their support crews horribly killed and Lara was taken by the fanatics to Cairo where she was the subject of hideous experiments with science and magic. Over time her confidence wavered so when MI6 and Majestic did manage to rescue her she was a broken woman. She resigned from MI6 and tried to get back into university which was a dismal failure.

It soon became apparent that the Sons of Set had altered her body and that she was now generating a neurotoxin in her bloodstream which was released from two ducts in her wrists. But rather than shun her new abilities, Lara saw it as an opportunity to regain her lost confidence. She hastily established a heroic identity, calling herself Asp, and began to train in amateur crime fighting utilising her limited secret service experience. Her immediate goal was to take revenge on the Sons of Set, but perhaps her ultimate goal was to join the heroes of Majestic.

It turned out that Empire took her kidnapping personally and thought that she had tricked them by posing as an intelligence agent while actually being an agent of Set. In several conflicts between Empire and Asp she tried to explain the error of their ways but the team was not in a forgiving mood and beat her into the pavement and into hospital. Every time she would be rescued by Majestic. Her dreams of becoming one of them were being diminished with every defeat and things looked dismal.

Lara received her opportunity to face off against the Sons of Set after being recruited by the rada spirit, Yemanja. Although the daughter of Beninese immigrants, Lara had never been to her parents' homeland, and the welcome she received there emboldened her and made her feel at home. When the Sons of Set attacked Porto-Novo as predicted by Yemanja, Lara and the other heroes were able to fight them off and become something of legends in the process. Lara had never experienced such success before and realised the value of team work.

She decided to stay with Rada and become a better hero, although she is still hung up on one day becoming a member of Majestic and moving back to the 'civilised' world of London.

Personality

Lara Codjo is a woman who jumps right in and gives every to a task, although her attention can sometimes waiver. She is confident and given the opportunity she will become one of the world's greatest heroes. She has had a few setbacks, however, and feels a little intimidated by the successes of more professional super heroes, most notably her idols Majestic.

She enjoys dancing and snakes, the combination of which seemed to be her favourite disguise as an MI6 Agent. She still works as an exotic dancer when gathering intelligence for Rada and the team jokes that she is like one of those American super spies on television. It's an image she has carefully cultivated. Her sensuality is undeniable and she exudes an air of the sex-kitten which has not gone done very well in Beninese society. The fact that she is also a lesbian has been harder to accept by her team mates and her new country, but their refusal to admit her sexuality doesn't really bother Lara. It's not like she's actually attracted to any of them anyway.

Quote

"Do you have to stare at my breasts like that?"

Powers

Dambala has been genetically modified by the Sons of Set so that her body produces a potent neurotoxins in her bloodstream. This toxin is able to be projected through tight ducts under her wrists, and when squirted at a target these venom blasts can cause paralysis or blindness. Her body is also resistant to neurotoxins and more resistant to injury due to the modifications.

Lara is also a trained intelligence officer, focusing more on the physical aspects of such a job, including martial arts training and field skills. She maintains contact with MI6 and although no longer an active member has done freelance work for them in Africa.

Appearance

Dambala is a provocative woman who strives for immediate impact, although shuns the attention of the media or any source which could capture her image and lead to the revelation of her true identity. Such a revelation would end any chance she has of continuing to work for MI6. Her costume includes a black skintight mask which covers the top part of her head, but allows her dark hair to sit freely in a pony tail. Her body armour is also black with green and white highlights, including a snake motif along her right leg, and reveals ample cleavage and midriff which enables her to distract opponents as well as infuriate the conservative members of Beninese society.

Dambala has two venom ducts on the inside of each wrist which look like small scars but which are able to project neurotoxin through a mental command.

Notes

Lara has connections to the intelligence community and is something of a Sydney Bristow character (a la Alias), although she also has the added twist of being able to generate venom blasts from her wrists like Spiderman. She has contacts with the British super hero team, Majestic (who she hero worships and so desperately wants to join) and MI6 (who she still works for on a freelance basis).

#19 BAKA (Benin)

baka.jpg

BAKA

Anicet Oketola

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

The son of a demon and a woman who died soon after birth, Oketola was raised by family in a remote village outside of Ouidah which was the spiritual home of the vodun belief. His family shunned him as cursed, and he had to learn to box to keep the older boys from beating on him too much. Everyone called him 'the cursed beast', a belief which was well-founded when he began to show signs of his demonic heritage during adolescence, at sixteen. The locals wanted to run Oketola out of their village, and some wanted him dead; but his family stood by him if only to honour the memory of his mother. He was kept in seclusion in a hut on the outskirts of the village and remained there for two years.

At eighteen years of age, Oketola decided to leave and smashed through the meager barriers set up to hold him. He trudged off into the sunset and kept away from home for years, moving through the country trying to avoid settlements where he would be branded a demon and hunted to death. He stayed within Benin, but moved to the northern regions where he became a legend.

When the Sons Of Set moved into the area they stumbled across his 'lair' and were thoroughly defeated. Soon after, Oketola was approached by Yemanja and she explained to him about his father, who was a demon. Oketola felt like his life was simultaneously coming apart but also coming together. His questions were answered but he didn't necessarily like what he heard.

He agreed to join the Rada Team because Yemanja promised to help him move back into society. He stayed with the team because he realised that he was accepted, and even wanted, by the people of Benin when he opposed the Sons Of Set.

Personality

Oketola has a body image problem and entertains regular thoughts of self-loathing and even suicidal impulses. This has improved through his association with the heroes of Rada Team, but he still hates being a monster. The thing that keeps him from ending his life is that he worries that he will be thrust into a fiery demonic dimension if he does die, and that frightens him even more than his reflection.

Quote

"Graaaugh! Run in fear!"

Powers

Baka possesses a demonic form with bone spikes erupting all over his body and bulbous muscles rippling on the surfaces of his bulky form. He can manipulate his bones to produce hard armour plates, extending bone shards and most impressively he can grow to a monstrous size of 10m, increasing his already uberhuman strength to devastating levels. He can also see into the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum and can hear beyond human levels.

Appearance

Baka is a demon. His body is thick and muscled (the muscles appearing intermittently with jutting bones on the outside of his skin rather than on the inside) and is truly intimidating. Baka frightens everyone, even when he is not trying; so when he grows to 10m tall he leaves an impression in everyone's minds. He cannot, naturally, wear conventional clothing, and usually drapes himself in hessian cloth when not on duty. He wishes he could turn back into his human form, but his life is destined for misery and his dreams are always spoiled.

Notes

Baka is the classic tortured soul. He is dangerous to anyone who touches him as his bones can cut through most things and he currently lacks the control he needs to keep his razor sharp bones sheathed.

I actually drew this picture over a year ago, but it wasn't quite right for the character, so it stayed in storage. Normally I'd draw new pictures but my fingers were sore. This team has seven members. Phew. So I used this one. I wanted a demonic character and this one suits it fine.

#19 AYZA (Benin)

ayza.jpg

AYZA

Lehadi Tchomogo

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

The shaman took Lehadi from his dead mother two hours after his birth. He had been sent to the small apartment by spirits and local animals, all of which seemed to believe the child was destined for greatness. The shaman became the boy's father for a while, feeding him and keeping him safe from the world, and all the while Lehadi learned about the animals and vodun.

When he was twelve, Lehadi and the shaman returned to Porto-Novo where he was introduced to the authorities, the police. The shaman was very old and he wanted Lehadi to be looked after, although Lehadi had no idea his visit to the capital would be the last time he would see his 'grand father'. The police chief wasn't sure what to do with the boy, but knew the shaman by reputation and trusted his judgement. The chief's wife convinced him to take Lehadi in as their own child and the chief reluctantly agreed.

Lehadi took their family name, Tchomogo, and enrolled in school where he did well enough but grew restless in the classrooms. He was used to living free and working with the cattle. He started to miss classes and explore the port city, enjoying the salt in the air and the movement at the wharfs. One day he entertained the idea of sailing away with one of the huge tankers which moored in the bay. He snuck on board and waited for the ship to leave, but as he waited he began to feel a weakness wash over him. Within a few hours he was passed out with exhaustion.

They found him in Marseilles. Doctors took a week to bring him out of a coma, and by then specialists had been called in, including the esteemed Dr Saul Numen who deduced that Lehadi was an uberhuman. Numen took the boy to Vienna where his condition deteriorated. It looked as if he would die, and the Numens took him home to Benin where they expected him to last no more than a few days.

As soon as the plane carrying Lehadi touched the tarmac the boy seemed to recover, and within a few hours he was fully recovered, perhaps even more healthy than he had been previously. Numen conducted further tests and brought in The Heart Of Africa who suggested that Lehadi's life was bound to the African continent and that he actually drew strength from its very soil.

Lehadi joined the Heart Of Africa's entourage and worked with her for a year as she helped communities across Africa. He then returned to Benin and was approached by the rada spirit, Yemanja, who had gathered together a team of superheroes to safeguard Benin's immediate future. The Sons of Set launched an attack on Porto-Novo, as predicted by the spirit, and her Rada team were able to stop them.

Lehadi became Ayza, the Protector.

Personality

Lehadi is young and idealistic, and after spending a large amount of time with the Heart of Africa, he now feels the weight of the world on his shoulders. He knows he has a big destiny in front of him and feels the need to embrace it fully now, rather than grow into it. At sixteen he is still young, but manages to inspire the people of Benin and his team mates as well. Only time will tell if he can survive the pressure.

Quote

"I can do it, just give me a little more time, okay?"

Powers

Ayza has become intrinsically linked to Africa, the symbiotic relationship granting him limited immortality and enhanced physical attributes. He has begun training with the other members of Rada in hand to hand combat and these fighting skills complement his impressive durability and allow him to be more effective in combat than he was originally. Presumably he will improve his strength and speed as he grows older.

Appearance

Lehadi is a muscular youth although he does very little weight training - it seems to be a natural part of his ubergene. His team mates have suggested that he might want to start training so that his strength can increase, although he is currently resistant. He prefers to spend time with people rather than with gyms and weight rooms. He keeps his hair very short and wears black shorts and an armoured golden vest with a lion's head. Although it is public knowledge that Ayza is Lehadi Tchomogo, he also wears a black domino mask. When not in costume, Lehadi wears casual attire, usually displaying a well known sporting brand. He hardly ever wears shoes, enjoying the touch of Africa's soil and the sustenance he receives from the connection.

#19 AGWE THE SUB MARINER (Benin)

agwe.jpg

AGWE THE SUB MARINER

Dr. Moustapha Munez

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Born in America to a Beninese chemist and an Argentinean mechanic, Moustapha was something of a nerd growing up and excelled in his chosen field of marine biology even though he managed to isolate himself in doing so. Rather than rely on peers for support, Moustapha opened his heart to the world he discovered under the water. At first he studied dolphins and marine mammals, but when he was approached by an Atlantean explorer, Moustapha found himself invited to the legendary city of Atlantis. While his human peers rejected him, the Atlanteans treated him as a learned man and shared with him knowledge of their own culture.

Using this knowledge, Moustapha developed a prototype explorer suit when he returned to the United States, which he dubbed the Sub Mariner suit. At first it was a basic self-contained exploring suit but Moustapha continued to add features until he discovered that he had created a power suit which enabled him to actively oppose those who would threaten the oceans.

As the Sub Mariner, Moustapha worked alongside the Atlanteans to repel attacks by the Lemurian Empire as well as to stop human pillagers including Deep Six. During one campaign against an unscrupulous oil company in Western Africa, Moustapha was approached by the rada spirit known as Yemanja, who was also known by the Atlanteans. Yemanja called upon Moustapha to join Benin's newly formed superhero group, the Rada, and Moustapha agreed and for the first time he visited the country of his mother.

He has found himself comfortable in Benin, but still vehemently identifies himself as American and returns to the States at least every month.

Personality

Moustapha Munez is a man with two distinct lives. His heroic identity as Agwe the Sub Mariner is larger than life, a professional hero who garners respect from human and Atlantean communities. He is an outspoken defender of the oceans and a keen promoter of alternative energy sources in order to protect the future of the marine world. His public identity as Dr Munez receives some degree of respect from the scientific community, but Moustapha still finds it difficult to maintain friendships with his peers. He finds creative outlets in designing new features to his suit as well as in the creation of Sub Mariner comics which are moderately successful in the States, although not widely popular.

Quote

"We must learn to embrace the unknown, not fear it."

Powers

The Sub Mariner suit is powered by Atlantean technology which is pollution free and seems to continue working indefinitely. Moustapha has tinkered with the suit and enhanced its alien technology. It produces a powerful force field which enables the wearer to survive in the deepest realms of the ocean as well as providing protection from most conventional weaponry and undersea predators. Moustapha has added a hard air projector which enables him to produce devastating blasts of air. The suit is able to move fast using turbines and is effective under water as well as in the air.

Moustapha has also created a range of devices ranging from infrared binoculars, to hand clamps and flare guns. His most valued accessories are his bolas which he can use to incapacitate enemies (although he has yet to work out how to use them effectively underwater).

Appearance

Moustapha Munez is a nervous looking man with thin-framed glasses and hollow cheeks. He wears a wetsuit when in the field, but when he shows up for his job as a lecturer, he wears black turtle-neck sweaters and slacks and uses too much hair gel to keep his curly hair straight and manageable, although it always ends up as hard as rock and unmoving.

As the Sub Mariner he wears a streamlined black suit which covers the body entirely. He wears white lined goggles and has white piping along the suit's edges and a heavy utility belt with a red 'A' emblazoned in the centre. His chest is covered in a bright red vest which sends a warning to his enemies both above and below the water. His wrists are equipped with turbine gauntlets which allow him to generate solid-air blasts as well as help him to navigate his feet turbines to fly or swim underwater.

#19 YEMANJA (Benin / Rada Dimension)

yemanja.jpg

YEMANJA

aka "Enomwoyi Ogoubiyi" (the human name she has adopted)

Character Sheet (HTM)

Personality

Yemanja is a spirit who is living amongst humans. She is sometimes ignorant of their customs and lives in the moment, enjoying all experiences as they come. She is immortal and doesn't think about mortality or mistakes, realising that anything that happens can be altered down the track. She is in love with Ogun, although she treats the relationship as entertainment for the present.

Among her own race she is known as immature and flighty, and the rada are currently looking at bringing Yemanja back to her home dimension and cutting short her little experiment.

Quote

"We have always served humanity, so I don't see why we should stop now. All these uber people just make things more colourful and interesting."

Powers

Yemanja is a powerful spirit although her powers are much reduced in the Earth Dimension. In times past she has been called upon by vodun priests to perform a variety of tasks, and through such a connection she has the powers of water: both creative and destructive. In her earthly form she is able to access only some of her powers, most notably the ability to project magic energy as a weapon, a constraint and a shield. She is always semi-corporeal on this plane of existence and able to completely vanish from sight at will.

Appearance

A spirit who has decided to turn her back on her home and come and play on Earth, Yemanja has taken on a humanoid form which has light blue skin, sky-blue eyes and a coral-peach coloured hair which seems to shimmer and vanish all the time as if floating through a mystical current.

Notes

Yemanja is one of the spirits of the vodun religion (aka voodoo). She is not as powerful in this humanoid form as she would be if summoned by a voodoo priest, but she has given up most of her power so she can take an active part in human affairs.

For American-based campaigns, Yemanja (and her team) could be brought into a game through voodoo. Perhaps Yemanja is bound to an evil voodoo priest and turns her powers on the PCs and when the heroes try to defeat her they find themselves being stopped by her team mates.

#19 OGUN (Benin)

OGUN

Mouritala Adjamossi

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Diary Entry:

24/09/06 - OGUN (Security Password: 014-643-7XX)

After being the only so-called hero in Benin for half a decade, I admit that I was initially worried about sharing the spotlight with Yemanja's band of heroes. I wasn't an uberhuman or the recipient of magical gifts. I was a soldier. I was a normal man who was forced to be something more when the squad I was in found themselves facing the very first incursion of our country by those cursed legions, the Sons of Set. We didn't know what we were facing. At first we assumed the men were refugees, but when they began to cut us down with energy weapons we knew that we had stumbled upon something we were not meant to. Our country had been chosen as the next conquest for the witch, Nepythys: she who would bring ruin and fire upon us all.

I survived and tackled one of the soldiers, grabbing control of the alien weapon. I fought until nightfall, killing strangers while all I knew fell around me. When the soldiers retreated into the darkness I found myself sickened by the death around me. These strange weapons didn't merely kill, they mutilated bodies beyond recognition. I threw down the rifle and swore never to use a firearm again.

News reached the cities that Benin was under attack, and that I had single-handedly defeated them. The public lined the streets. My superiors suggested I leave the armed forces, and my wife Djedji seemed to be satisfied that I had reached my potential. We had been having trouble, Djedji and I. We wanted children, but it didn't seem as if we would be blessed in such a way.

The Sons Of Set returned, of course, but I stood between them and their goal. I wielded a staff which made the enemy underestimate me. They did not know that my ancestors were the famed female warriors, colloquially called amazons by the white people. Our blood was a warrior's blood. I faced off against the godlike fury of the one they called Maahes and nearly died, but the Christian heroes of Sanctity had tracked the Settites and came to my aid. I realised then that I couldn't hold on forever by myself.

And then I was visited by a mysterious, impossibly beautiful, spirit.

Yemanja.

She took me to an island in the Bight where we sat and talked for hours. She had been watching us, hoping we would be safe, but she came to the conclusion that Benin required heroes. She convinced me to lead her assembled heroes and I... I found myself agreeing with her. And I fell in love with her. I hadn't realised it, at first, but it was soon clear. Every moment I saw her and sat with her, I felt my attraction grow.

And yet, my reputation and principles would not allow such a tryst to come about. Yemanja seemed to coax me, to draw out my emotions, and against all my logical impulses we succumbed to desire.

Where does that leave me? I am a hero, more than a mortal man; and yet I find myself betraying my wife of ten years and through that betrayal I am destroying my society. What would the people who admire me think if they realised I was a fake?

I only hope that I can maintain the strength to keep serving my country, and to avoid destroying everything I hold dear through the weakness of my flesh.

Personality

Mouritala has always been a proud man and serves his country because it is the right thing to do, perhaps the only thing to do. He is normally honest and holds strong moral beliefs, but his relationship with Yemanja is threatening to tear him apart. He knows that he is a normal human and that she is a creature beyond imagination, but he cannot resist her and feels himself beginning to resent his mortal wife, something which makes him sick.

Quote

"We may be a small country compared with yours, but what we lack in size we certainly make up for in heart."

Powers

Before meeting Yemanja, Mouritala was a trained soldier who had developed excellent skills in stick-fighting. After meeting the spirit he was blessed with the spirit of Ogun which manifested itself with an affinity for fighting, enabling him to fight even when blinded as well as finding flaws in most opponents. He is also able to generate a flurry of strikes with his staff which defy logic. While channeling the spirit of Ogun he is able to land blows five times faster than normal.

Appearance

Ogun is an athletic man in his thirties who has had a life in the military as well as extensive training on his own. When in costume he wears a golden-orange body armour, with black leggings and wrist guards. He carries a 2m staff which has been blessed by Yemanja. It is always cool to the touch even in the hottest of days.

#20 THUNDER DRAGON (Bhutan)

thunderdragon.jpg

THUNDER DRAGON

Geeta Wangchuk

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Geeta was discovered by the Kung Fu Master Go on a journey to the western regions of China. She had no memory of her past but showed great promise as a warrior, although Go refused to train her as she had no one to recommend her to him. Geeta was determined and since she had recognised great power in the old martial arts Master, she felt compelled to remain in his company. She forced her way into his small entourage and cleaned for him and prepared food for the group. The others considered her impetuous, and although Go could also see the rudeness in her actions he could also see a desperate bid to retain a connection she had felt with him. He enquired about her in the area and discovered that she was from Bhutan, but that nothing else was known about her. In fact, the locals thought she was a wandering thief. They had no respect for her.

Go instructed one of his students to test the girl and his student was so impressed that he pleaded with Go to watch her train for himself. On the evening of the training session Go had heard trouble from India and their fledgling superhero group, the Assembly. The Indian Government had invaded Pakistan. Go was saddened and his attention was not fully on the practice duel.

Geeta could sense that Go's attention was elsewhere and rather than consider his reasons for such distraction she took them as testament to her inferior abilities. She believed he had already judged her and became angry... very angry.

The clouds darkened and came racing from around the area, congealing above into thunderous stormclouds. Lightning flashed in the sky as Geeta and the student fought with sticks. The skies roared with fury which was mirrored on the ground as Geeta struck the student down. Go's interest was intensified as the storm began to dissipate and he conjectured that the girl he was watching was more than a talented fighter.

She was an uberhuman.

He consented to train her, but it was clear early on that her attention was on Bhutan. As the months passed, news from India grew more disturbing. The country had taken control of many of its neighbours through the brute force of its uberhuman Assembly. Geeta began to remember parts of her childhood times in Bhutan. Se would talk of these times with Go and he encouraged her to return to her homeland, agreeing to accompany her there.

Once in her homeland, Geeta seemed to recall more and more of her past including the location of the mystical Sword Of The Thunder Dragon which had been her father's or grandfather's sword. She wasn't clear, but when she discovered the blade Go was amazed at the power it held. He even suspected that the girl's heritage was more than human, and even more than uberhuman.

With the blade in her hands, Geeta came to realise that she was needed in Bhutan to protect her country from the greedy eyes of India. She knew that her country's hydroelectric power was coveted by neighbours and also believed that her government and king were weak and corrupt. She told Go that she would leave him and work alone, and even though her training was far from complete, Go released her knowing that her fate was in Bhutan and not with him.

She had only spent a year with the Master but she felt that he had brought her back to life. He had shown her power in physical movement and had awakened her past including the hidden location of her sword. She wields the sword as Thunder Dragon and seeks to protect her small country from India as well as China and her own military.

Personality

Thunder Dragon has a powerful legacy to fulfill, although it is still unclear as to the origins of her powers or the Sword of the Thunder Dragon. There are some legends that link the sword to a powerful warlord from northern China several thousand years ago, but the sword was older than that and only fell into his hands through conquest. Geeta has tried to find out more about her origins but so far has many more questions than answers.

She feels the pressures and loneliness of her role and has never been able to form real relationships with other people. The closest she has come has been with Go, although she feels that she has disappointed him by leaving his training. She currently lives in villages for short periods of time, never really making connections and has mostly been overlooked. Through her investigations into her past Geeta has taken on the family name of Wangchuk, a family who vanished mysteriously over a decade ago from the area she feels most at home with. She is not certain but she feels that the missing Wangchuk's may have been her family.

Quote

"Gather dark clouds, for retribution is at hand."

Powers

Geeta is able to wield the mystical blade of the Thunder Dragon which enables the warrior to cut through most materials, deliver thunderous blows and to move so fast as to knock out hurtled objects from the air. She has trained with Go and has learned several powerful King Fu movements which she relies on when her sword is taken away from her. Her most impressive ability to date is to be able to redirect attacks back on her attackers, including a memorable time when she diverted an energy blast from Fusion to strike down the mercenary Naga. The sword seems able to deflect any attack even nuclear energy.

In addition to the sword and the training, Geeta's mysterious origins have also granted her limited powers over the weather, specifically the ability to gather together stormclouds. She does this unconsciously when angered or frustrated, but is also able to command them through conscious thought. She is able to generate winds from the storm to propel her through the air, as well as call down lightning with pin-point accuracy.

She wears an enchanted robe which she discovered with the sword and the robe has so far prevented many serious blows from hurting her.

Appearance

Thunder Dragon is a simple-looking woman of indeterminate age, although she is less than forty. She has long dark hair which she wears in a variety of styles and slightly pock-marked skin on her cheeks. Her eyes are dark, especially when she is angry as they reflect the stormclouds she can command. She regularly wears peasant clothing which allows her to fade away into backgrounds, but as Thunder Dragon she wears an enchanted robe made of a dark green silk, bordered in white. She wears black leggings and bodysuit under her robes and conceals her identity with a dragon-themed mask.

#21 SAETA ROJO (Red Dart) (Bolivia)

saetarojo.jpg

SAETA ROJO

Cristina Gavilan

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Saeta Rojo has caused trouble for international companies in Bolivia and beyond, targeting them and stealing everything from cash to security information and personal effects from the offices of management. She is a compulsive thief who is said to have grown up in a poor family and blossomed into a kind of Cinderella-figure with all her dreams available at the end of her superfast fingertips. She cultivated two fences for her regular exploits, and even travelled beyond South America up through the West Coast of the United States on 'vacation' where she raced through Silicon Valley with some success, although she realised that there were more superheroes in America which seemed to get in her way.

She spent a couple of months in prison in Mexico and it looked as if she was going to be extradited the the United States, but she was busted out by her fence, Jose Morales, who got into huge debts on her behalf. She thanked him, realised he was in love with her, and basically left him standing on the Mexican plains.

Too much baggage.

The moneylenders had him killed and then put out a bounty on Saeta Rojo because she wouldn't pay. It turned out that the backers had been in the employ of the Latin drug-lord Leonardo Bonet. Bonet made contact with Saeta Rojo and upped the interest on the principal to a level where she was now in two minds whether to pay up or keep on the run.

She has turned her eyes back to the States where she feels she has a better chance of getting the money, but she knows that time is running out - even for her.

Personality

Very keen, but not overly intelligent or perceptive, the Red Dart usually races into situations before she really knows what is going on. Luckily for her she is able to rush right back out again if things don't go her way. She loves gadgets and technology, although she remains mostly ignorant of their purposes which has caused some minor catastrophes in her career.

While an unashamed criminal, Red Dart is not a killer, and has even opposed those criminals who have shown a disregard for human life. In her own eyes she is a hero for the oppressed, but in reality she is just a petty thief with a conscience.

Quote

"Ooh, that's muy guapo... very pretty... mine!"

Powers

The Red Dart is one of the fastest people on the planet, and has even managed to get her name in the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest woman ever recorded. She also has superhuman reaction speed and has been known to dodge bullets and to seemingly appear and disappear in a blur. She seems untouchable, and even when she does seem to collide while running, unless she is rendered unconscious she inevitably manages to swerve at the final millisecond to avoid injury.

Appearance

The Red Dart has worn a variety of costumes during her career, but is currently enamored of a revealing suit which is predominantly white with red lightning stripes, boots, mask and gloves. Her costume reveals a bare midriff and plunging neckline. She has yellow lightning bolts attached to her boots and mask which she thinks makes her look very sharp. She wears a mask which covers the top half of her head and conceals her long black hair which falls to her shoulders when out of costume.

Notes

Red Dart is a light hearted villain without schemes to take over the world. She just wants to have fun and take shiny stuff that might be worth something. Her costume is based on another famous speedster, just for fun.

Hope she's a good addition to your campaigns.

I've forwarded her on to Lynne's 'Unofficial Handbook of the Champions Universe' just in case she needs another villain.

#22 DOCTOR KOJIC (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

doctorkojic.jpg

DOCTOR KOJIC

Dr. Mirko Kojic

Character Sheet (HTM)

Background

Doctor Mirko Kojic was travelling with his family across the notorious Snipers' Alley in Sarajevo during the conflict which resulted in the dissolution of Yugoslavia. His son, Ilijaz, and daughter-in-law, Nina, had convinced him to make the perilous journey to help one of their friends who was trapped on the other side of the river. Kojic protested and warned them against the journey, and pleaded for them to at at least wait for a NATO troop convoy so they could have some sort of protection. But his son called him a coward and so Kojic gave in to the demands of the young.

As they crossed the stretch of road that had been given the name 'Snipers' Alley', Kojic felt his heart beating so much faster than usual. He felt as if he were about to suffer a heart attack and clutched on to the little hands of his grandson all the tighter. The little boy Zlatko looked up to his grandfather's face with a hopeful smile... and that was when the shots rang out across the street.

Kojic felt his arm ripped backward and he fell to the ground, only to see his son and daughter-in-law fall to the street in splashes of blood. Zlatko, too, was shot down.

Kojic blinked, thinking he was dying. He looked to the hills which gave the snipers such a clear view of the street and he felt his body tense. His heart continued to pump harder and harder and his eyes seemed to glaze over. He pushed himself up with his hands and he was shot again by the sniper. But instead of falling down again, Kojic pulled himself up, realising that the bullets were bouncing off of his body and falling to the ground around him.

He turned his gaze to the mountains.

More shots rang out.

Kojic clenched his fists.

Years later, Kojic was still mourning his family but he had also developed an intense hatred for NATO who he blamed for not protecting them. On the day his ubergene had activated Doctor Kojic had laid waste to the section of Sarajevo as well as much of the hillside communities which were used by the snipers. Citizens were unsure whether to applaud him or fear him, but it was soon clear to them that Kojic was not going to bring about any kind of peace. He rampaged through the world taking his vengeance out on anyone who dared to stand in his way.

Over time he came to realise the flaws in his powers, especially that they were activated by adrenaline and that as an old man he was not capable of generating such rushes on his own. He turned to the laboratory where he developed a series of triggers, none of which gave him the results he needed, although such experiments did manage to further decay his sense of morality and his grasp on reality. He began using amphetamines to bring about the rush which would activate his strength and with the trigger in his control he continued his attacks on the world.

Doctor Kojic is known as a marauding psychopath as well as a nefarious 'evil genius' depending on the time of the year and his use of drugs. Sometimes he pursues scientific discoveries such as a way to harness his ubergene and affect other test subjects (mostly resulting in brainless monsters) while at other times he seems content to lay waste to cities and especially American interests.

Personality

Kojic was once a driven medical doctor and proud grandfather, but since the deaths of his family and his growing reliance on amphetamines to supply him with the necessary kick to manifest his powers, Kojic has become a desperate man without a keen grasp on reality. He has become insane by comic book standards and is driven to take his revenge on NATO and anyone else he can blame for the deaths of his family and the destruction wrought upon his homeland. He does not take any responsibility for his own actions and doesn't see that he has become a mockery of a human, driven as he is by the need for revenge and the next high. His dependence on drugs has unleashed a psychotic streak within him and has manifested itself as sadistic tendencies which he has become infamous for across Europe including the torture of soldiers and the destruction of places where families congregate. Kojic lives in his own world now and cannot be persuaded to see his actions as being wrong. The world is wrong, in his eyes, and anyone who argues with him is clearly not to be trusted and must be eliminated.

Quote

"All of this is my work... burning automobiles in the deserted streets... cracked walls and barriers which once protected the innocent and meek... I have the strength to rend society itself asunder and not even your so-called heroes can stop me!"

Powers

Kojic's powers came to him very late in life and may have manifested themselves in different way had circumstances themselves been different. As it is, Kojic is able to channel his adrenaline into uberhuman strength. The more agitated or active he gets the more power he can wield. He has come to use amphetamines as a way to tap into this power so that he can control his transformation more readily. At his peak strength, Kojic can lift over 800 tons and is considered one of the strongest ubers on the planet. In this powered state, Kojic also possesses increased invulnerability to physical and energy attacks and regenerative powers.

However, in his natural state, Kojic is a frail man and has consistently been captured after his opponents have been able to moderate his adrenaline levels and de-power him - something that Kojic has found infuriating to say the least!

During his career, Kojic has sometimes used a dart gun which he engineered himself. The darts are fired from a glove and can contain a variety of effects from a paralysing toxin to a deadly one, an explosive shell to razor sharp darts.

Appearance

Doctor Kojic is a thin man in his seventies. He has very little hair on his head and his eyes have sunken into his head as if retreating from the pain and suffering he has witnessed. He tends to wear conventional clothing, including mismatched suits, oversized wool-lined jackets, pants and cardigans. When his strength manifests itself he inevitably tears his clothing although he does not seem to actually grow in stature, remaining in the physical form of an elderly man.

Notes

Kojic is a look at what would happen if the ubergene manifested itself late in life rather than the traditional adolescence. He is a frail man but capable of becoming one of the world's strongest men. In addition to the baggage he might have to carry due to his age, Kojic is also a drug addict, drawn to amphetamines as a way to harness his powers rather than rely on nature alone.

He is a scientist of the 'mad' tradition and capable of nefarious schemes as well as your straight line crazy rampages.
