Re: Mottos for use in games

"Wählte Ungnade, wo Gehorsam nicht Ehre brachte!"

Chose disfavour where obedience did not provide Honor!

Prussian General Johann Friedrich Adolf von der Marwitz who declined to follow his kings orders to plunder chateau Hubertusburg of the Electoral Prince of Saxony in 1760. He thought it to be below his AND his kings honor to do so and ask for his dismissal. It was granted.

The motto is on his gravestone.

"Wir sind nicht auf der Welt um glücklich zu sein und das Leben zu genießen, sondern um unsere Schuldigkeit zu tun."

We are not on this world to be happy and enjoy life but to do our share.

Bismarck

"If violence is not the answer I did not understand the question."

"Might makes Right!"

- Minuteman, Freedom Force.

That's backwards. It's "Right makes Might" (or it should be)

Hey, a man can hope, can't he?

"If we do not dream, how can our dreams come true?" Alfred Pennyworth, from batman: To Stalk A Spectre by Simon Hawke.

Re: Mottos for use in games

Growing up with Trekkies for an aunt and uncle I always liked the Klingons. Their mantra/battle cry, “Today is a good day to die” always stuck with me. Some people see it as nihilistic, but I see it more like the “live every day like it’s your last” sentiment (I know that’s an extremely optimistic view of the statement). As far as actual war is concerned it is a lot like the samurai mentality towards battle.

Also, for any horror/paranormal/supernatural game I like the motto from the first 30 Days of Night sequel: “Nothing lives without a head.” Not necessarily true in some settings, but a good rule of thumb.

I believe that quote's been attributed to Crazy Horse, at the Battle of Little Bighorn?

Re: Mottos for use in games

I ran a short-lived Rebel Special Forces campaign in grad school. One of the soldiers, considering a fight with several times their number of stormtroopers, quipped, "We're not outnumbered; we're in a target rich environment."

Here's another d6 Star Wars quote which later became a kind of group motto:

"We've got you outnumbered 5 to 70!"

Here's a few that may or may not qualify as mottos...

"Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition."

(from X-Men 2099)

"It doesn't take rocket science; it takes a rocket."

(from a Punisher comic, I forget which one)

"Mercs never die; they go to hell to regroup."

(from a T-Shirt at the local military surplus store)

"Wolverines!"

"What's grazing fire? Why don't you just shoot right at 'em?"

(a pair from Red Dawn)

"Never, I mean NEVER take off your helmet in combat."

(a mantra from our Special Forces campaign, where failing to use one's helmet resulted in a strong tendency to get shot in the head)

Re: Mottos for use in games

From one of the only Dark Champs games I ever played in:

"Violence just got a little more random" - Reese Wilkerson

And the unofficial motto of one of my big baddies in Champions:

"If it takes the death of me

to make history,

the whole world will remember my misery" Onyx
