Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

When the meteorite crashed in the badlands of Wyoming, amateur astronomer Connie Benton thought it would be the find of a lifetime. Little did she know how right she'd be. The first thing that struck her as odd was the lack of heat around the crater when she approached it. The second thing was how perfectly smooth and spherical the meteorite was. Like a crystal ball. Actually more like an obsidian ball.

But when she reach out to touch it, the sphere suddenly cracked open and a strange glowing red THING (to this day, Connie can't really describe it. Slime? Plasma? Lava?) shot out and enveloped her. She screamed. Bizarre images assailed her psyche...

...when she finally woke up, she had changed, bonded now with an alien symbiote. She could fly with fiery wings of plasma, be protected by a field of fire and project flames. However, she could only do this at night. Ultraviolet light caused the symbiote to withdraw, leaving her as a mere human. Taking on the name Nightfire Connie soon got the attention of the Stellars.

It is left up to the GM to determine if the symbiote is sentient or unintelligent, benevolent or malign. Connie right now really wants to be a hero. The symbiote, however, may have other ideas...

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

I too was stuck at work; perhaps we can try the X-Y's another time. (You know I'm all over this theme.)

In the meantime:

Fulgurite

Fulton Smith sometimes wondered why he was so different from the other kids in his neighborhood. They didn't seem to get stronger in sunlight and weaker in the dark, or bleed green blood. Then when he started throwing off sparks at school whenever he looked at pretty girls, his parents decided he was old enough for the truth.

It turned out that Fulton's father had been one of the officers of an alien invasion a while back. He'd been assigned to discover the identity of one of Earth's greatest heroes and assassinate her. Due to some contrived coincidences resulting in mistaken identity, Mr. Smith (not his real name) had wound up falling in love with the hero's best friend instead. He faked his own death, hid out for a few years until the invasion faded from memory, then wooed and won his love.

Fulton was enrolled in a "young metahumans" school under the code name Fulgurite, graduated about the middle of his class, and signed up with the Stellars.

Fulgurite can levitate, teleport (though it takes extra time to do) and throw electrical bolts. He's also somewhat stronger than normal humans. However, his energy stores can only be restored by exposure to direct sunlight. (his costume is designed to strip to trunks and boots easily for maximum skin exposure when viable.)

Interestingly, Fulgurite also seems to have an aura of command; but it only works on minion-level aliens, who are unduly impressed by him.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

We've all been there, right? You're young, ambitious, and fresh out of school. You don't just dream about making a difference, you're sure that you will. There's no chance you'll waste your life.

So you set your sights on the biggest, best organization you can find. You buy the suit. You get the haircut. You polish that resume and go through the interview process and wait for the call. And the call comes and you celebrate with your friends.

Your first day of work you arrive early. You meet your boss. And you're told that all the really exciting work is being handled by a bunch of old farts; not because they're smarter or better or more intelligent than you, but because of seniority. You bridle, but you set your shoulders and play the game. You tell yourself that if you take on some tough assignments and really shine, you'll rise all that much faster. You'll get to that position of real power before your youthful energy, vision, and integrity have been worn away. Oh yes. Yes, you will.

So you volunteer for the worst of the worst and they give it to you. And you set to.

That's what The Intern did for the Galactic Council of Civilizations. He took on the incredibly difficult assignment of hauling a bunch of backwater barbarians into the enlightened present. He came to Earth to improve it. The locals think of him as a hero and that's fine with The Intern. He wants them optimistic and inspired. The quicker they make changes for the better, the quicker he hauls ass off this rock and climbs the GCC ladder.

Six-limbed, orange-skinned, with a mouth set between his four eyes and nostrils atop his bald head, there's no way the Intern can pass for human. He uses advanced technologies to help him fight ignorance, barbarity, and villainy on Earth -- though not technology so advanced it could threaten the planet should it fall into the wrong hands. Nearly all of his equipment uses "stasis technology" to protect the Intern and stop opponents in their tracks.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Apex takes on the abilities of the nearest, most powerful apex predator whether he wishes to or no. Taking on those abilities nearly always leads to obvious physical changes. Fortunately for him, he never takes on aspects that are more limiting than his natural human form.

Example abilities

  • Black Mamba: While in Kenya, Apex found himself with a cobra-like neck flap, black mouth, sinuous torso, and fangs filled with one of the deadliest neurotoxins known.
  • Cheetah: On a mission to Iran, Apex grew a tail, semi-retractable claws, enlarged heart and lungs, and could accelerate from 0 to 60 faster than a sports car.
  • Komodo Dragon: A jaunt to Komodo Island led to Apex growing a very long tail, a mouthful of serrated teeth, a mouthful of nasty bacteria, and a long, forked tongue.
  • Wolverine: A trip to Canada isn't just about maple syrup for Apex. Nope, he also enjoys powerful jaws, sharp claws, waterproof fur, and special molars that allow him to eat food that has frozen solid.

Dang, molars with that ability would have come in handy in college.:doi:

Agent Walsh

former MIB member. Still loosely linked to the organization. They gave him a power armor of reversed engineered alien technology to test out. THey "arranged" for him to join a new group of alien heroes called the Stellars. Walsh doesnt particularly like MIB and would like to be rid of them. (if only he could) But, the suit gives him a good power kick. So, he'll get some entertainment for now.

Walsh isnt exactly a fan of MIB. He retired under mysterious (and mostly likely strained) circumstances. But, it didnt seem to sever his ties to the organization totally, given his current predicament. Perhaps he knew too much to let get away totally. (and live). He seems to like his teammates better. Though, that doesnt go so far as to say he actually likes them. He'd just rather be with them, than those "holier-than-thou @$$holes he want let him go free. Maybe, the Stellars can help him escape. Not a hero per se (not a villain either. He does it because he has to (and he really does have to)

Powers: Some of the suits powers include: flight, teleportation, energy blast, sonic disruptors. holographic image creation, and probablt many others not yet disclosed.

New team: Constitutional Guard 6 members. (probably flagsuit types or similar) dedicated to being a kind of national team for USA.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Posterity is a lot closer to his family than most people are. He is constantly in low-level telepathic contact with every male of his line -- past and future. Equipped only with government-issue red, white, and blue bulletproof spandex, a standard firearm, and incomparable confidence, Posterity is at his best when he's working the family.

Tossed in a supervillain's holding cell with no hope for escape? No worries. Posterity focuses his attention on the men of his family who have gone before him and lets them know about the problem. Sometime in the past, one of Posterity's ancestors does something to help. Perhaps he gets on the construction detail for the cell and intentionally screws up something. Perhaps he buries a cache of weapons and tools. Perhaps he arranges for a message to be held by a law firm until just the right date -- at which point it's passed along to PRIMUS.

It's not all apple pie for Posterity, though. He's often called upon by one of his descendants in the future to perform some bizarre deed or other. To make a stock purchase or make sure some kid passes his geometry exam or arrange for the sequencing of the oyster genome...

Franklin claims he's descended from THE Benjamin Franklin. He might very well be telling the truth. He's fluent in every language and is a super-genius gadgeteer. His power suit may be light-weight, but it's remarkable durable, gives him super-strength and packs one heck of an electrical blast. He's a fluent orator as well, preferring to negotiate for a peaceful solution if at all possible. Still, he's not afraid to fight when it comes to it.

However, as his ancestor was rumoured to say "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety," Franklin distrusts the governmental excesses certain people running the nation want to take and will butt heads with any of the more jingoistic members of the team.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

The hero known as Amendment is secretly law student (and politician wannabe) Robert W. Smith. Born with the mutant ability to replicate himself up to 9 times, he briefly considered taking the name "Bill of Rights," but thought better of it. He has studied various martial arts, including judo, karate, and aikido, and is proficient with many common martial arts weapons. As Amendment, he wears a parchment-tan outfit interspersed with phrases from the Constitution, written in calligraphy in a subdued gray.

If not duplicated yet, Amendment is able to duplicate and recombine very quickly, allowing him to pull various tricks. (An odd quirk allows him to recombine into a form other than his original one, but only if this is done within 2-3 seconds.) For instance, he can briefly surround a target, hit him/her multiple times, and then recombine back to one individual. He can also bridge gaps by duplicating across that gap, and then recombining into the form that ends up on the other side of that gap. He can do the same thing to reach up to about 50 feet high, by duplicating forms onto each others' shoulders and then recombining back into the top form. (In game terms, this should be done as Teleport, passes across intervening space.)

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Captain Justice

George Sterling was one of the great WWII era patriotic heroes. Previously a member of the Crusaders, after the war struck out on his own with Lady Liberty and her sidekick Kid Liberty, as part of Liberty and Justice. In 1955, he received a tip about some crime evidence that could be found in an empty warehouse, and he had to hurry. Hurry he did, hopping on the JusticeCycle.

When he got there, it was dark. He pulled out his wartime Zippo for some light. From the darkness, he was hit on the head; his lighter went skittering across the floor. The last thing he remembered seeing was a ring of bright lights, then unconsciousness.

When he came to, he was surrounded by crates, shelving, and cobwebs. He must have been in here a long time for people to have packed the warehouse without knowing he was here. Fumbling around in the dark, he found his Zippo; he tried to light it but it wasn't working. He managed to find his way outside.... to a changed world! The first thing he noticed was the cars. Gone were the luxurious models made of Detroit steel and American ingenuity. What he saw looked at first like UFOs with wheels. Turning to where he left the JusticeCycle parked, he found... another one of those space-age cars. Not his. And the people... instead of business suits and smartly dressed women in skirts, he saw.... the only way he could describe what he saw was madness.

He saw a police officer, who took him to the station. Finally, something familiar. The steps on which he, Lady Liberty, Chief Price, and others would hold their press conferences after a successful collar. The interior, though, was changed as well. Gone was the slightly seedy, poorly lit main office with the Boys In Blue milling around. What he saw was brightly lit, men and women in suits, with what looked like a TV set on every desk? And women cops? His hands shaking, he reached for a cigarette, remembered his lighter wasn't working, turned to ask for a light... and saw a dozen faces staring at him with a look of disapproval. Someone cleared their throat next to him, pointing at a sign that clearly said "No Smoking".

It took a long time for him to convince them that he wasn't just another nutcase dressed up as Captain Justice, that he really was Captain Justice. It took him almost that long to realize what had happened... he had been catapulted over 50 years into the future! In 1955 he had apparently vanished without a trace, and Lady Liberty and Kid Liberty had taken into custody a villain named Mr. Science, who was somehow responsible....

Captain Justice and the man in the suit regarded one another warily. The man looked familiar, but he couldn't place the face. He was sure he knew him from somewhere. Then the man spoke. "George? Is it really you?"

Justice responded. "Yes, but how do you know...?"

"George, it's me. Capt-- Kid Liberty."

With that, it finally sunk in. One shock after another, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. George "Captain Justice" Sterling, for the first time in his life, fainted.

Melting Pot is a young woman blessed by the Spirit of America (or so she claims) with a unique gift. She can merge any two Americans into one person for a few minutes. The combined person has the combined strength, intelligence, speed, skills, etc. of the two Americans, but oddly enough, neither of their Psychological Complications (apparently the melding cancels out any mental abnormalities.) Afterwards, the two people have an increased understanding of each other, though this is not always as helpful as Melting Pot would like. Melting Pot normally uses herself as one of the ingredients, and hates doing it non-consensually (but is sometimes required to by mission objectives.)

And for our next team...

"Who speaks for the dead? We do."

"Who protects the dead? We do."

"Who avenges the dead? We do."

"We are The Graveyard Shift. Because 'rest in peace' should mean just that."

Five heroes who specialize in helping the dead, from as small a thing as cemetary vandals to as large as fighting Takofanes' latest mass necromancy. Sometimes they'll stretch a point and help relatively innocent undead, or even the living if the problem falls into their area of expertise.

He calls himself Uriah, and is a specialist in death myths. A handsome man with striking Middle Eastern features, Uriah serves as an advisor to the Graveyard Shift, separating what is truly evil from what is misunderstood neutrality. He despises necromancy, though he sympathizes with those undead left with unfinished business/seeking deserved justice. Few entities are able to resist his banishings; fewer still can stand against his wrath if he is moved to anger.

In actuality, Uriah is the Archangel Uriel, the Angel of Death and Warden of the Gates of Hell. His is a thankless job by most human standards. And yet, he loves and respect humanity. He weeps at how Michael, Raphael and Cherub have turned their backs on their duties to join The Guardian Angels. He keeps his angelic nature a secret. In the meantime, while he sees how low an angel can fall, he hopes one day as his duty as Hell's Warden he may see an infernal truly redeem itself...

The Medium (Emily Callahan) is a more straightforward superhero. She has the ability to summon, control, and talk to spirits, and they can do anything from swarm around her so that she appears as a blur to others, to moving things at a distance for her, to actually picking her up and carrying her. She can even, for someone recently dead (say, within the past five minutes), hold their spirit in place long enough for them to be brought back (through CPR, a Heal power, and so forth) (bought as 0d6 Healing, Resurrection).

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

The Tolling appears to be a boy of about 12. That's how old he was when he died some twenty years ago. His undeath has been kinder to him than his life of which he has said little but, "I was rode hard and put away wet. When I was worn through, I was tossed away."

Distrustful of the living, the Tolling feels most comfortable among the dead. And they provide what he needs. The Tolling can summon just about anyone or anything he needs, so long as he is in a graveyard and can spell out what he needs with letters on the gravestones therein. Some things are simpler to summon than others, and the dead do not always provide precisely what the Tolling had in mind.

Specificity is an important limiting factor on the Tolling's Summon Power. Generic words like "car", "gun", or "knife" will get him something recognizable as that object, but not necessarily exactly what he had in mind. The car might not run, the gun may be a toy, and the knife may be useful primarily for spreading butter. It takes time and effort to spell out just what the Tolling might want to Summon.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

"Hello. Donner Investigations, Nick Donner speaking." (pause) "No, the ad is not a joke. I am a mage, as well as a private investigator -- just like Harry Dresden, only more specialized." (pause) "Dresden Files. Great series of books, disappointing TV show that died after one season." (pause) "No, ma'am, I don't suppose that would be 'your cup of tea.'" (pause, sighs) "No, that's a skin disease. 'Mage,' not 'mange.' As in 'magician,' only more powerful. I specialize in the dead." (pause) "Talking to the recently deceased, occasionally raising them for short periods of time. Of course, it helps that I'm a bit dead myself." (pause) "Hello? Ma'am? Hello?"

"Deadman" Donner is a relatively young (38 year-old) mage who, upon reading Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books, decided that being a mage/PI was a neat idea. Unfortunately, one of his first cases (a missing person's case that turned into an apparent murder/suicide that seemed a little too "pat") led to Donner dying himself under mysterious circumstances. Being a mage, he managed to cast one last spell to keep himself from crossing over completely. Currently, he's not quite alive (no pulse, no breathing, no need to eat or sleep, but also unable to feel) and also not quite dead (not decomposing - yet). He can hear (but not see) spirits, and can cast a decent variety of spells (though he is unable to heal damage to himself).

Every month, Donner has to renew the spell keeping him semi-alive, which requires (among other things) that he assist in the peaceful crossing over of at least one spirit during that month. This isn't as easy as it seems, since spirits who don't automatically leave the mortal world want to stay for a reason -- unfinished business, revenge, or what have you. But he does his best, mainly because he himself is still trying to solve the crime that resulted in his death.

New Team: The Seekers

This is the self-declared "reserve team" for the Champions. Though completely unsanctioned (and pretty much unwanted) by the Champions themselves, these four hero-wannabes have actually managed to do some good in their first year on the job in Millennium City.

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

This is the story of The Alternate.

Robbie Barnes was a fanatic about the Champions. His wall was plastered with pictures and posters of the team. He had scrapbooks filled with the latest derring-dos of Defender, Obsidian, Seeker, Quantum, Solitaire and Jaguar. He cheered when they butted heads with C.L.O.W.N., was terrified when Professor Muerte and the rest of Terror Inc. threatened the city, wondered who'd win in a fight between Gold-Wing and Defender. You know, that sort of thing.

Cue Robbie's ultimate experience when he found himself right at ground zero when Malachite the Perfect Man attacked the museum to steal this strange crystal. There was a huge explosion. Robbie was caught up in the blast...

...when he awoke from his coma five years later, he was in for a huge shock. This world...it couldn't be HIS world, could it?! Where was Seeker? Where were Obsidian and Quantum? Heck, where was C.L.O.W.N.?! Worse still, it was like they never existed! No one knew what the heck poor Robbie was talking about. There was talk of committing him to psychiatric care. In a panic, Robbie ran, trying to figure out what to do...

...and found himself changed into the very perky body of Solitaire, master mystic and mentalist! Delighted (all right, maybe he handled changing into a woman a bit TOO well), Robbie experimented, finding out that he could change into the heroes -- HIS heroes -- that he remembered. It wasn't a near-perfect change. Sometimes, he didn't have all the powers, skills or training. So far he can only keep up the shift for two hours at max. And sometimes, he changes into the wrong form for the job. The rest of the team is still trying to forget about that whole "Merry Andrew" debacle.

If Robbie can't have his heroes back, he'll have the next best thing! Hope he doesn't get obsessed about what he remembered...

Basically, if a 4th Ed. HERO character wasn't shifted/adapted to 5th/6th edition, Robbie can change into him/her. It's an activation roll to try to shift into a specific character. Pray he doesn't critical botch as he has the potential to change into a VILLAIN as well...

She's tall. She's buxom. She's quick and proud and (almost) ready for action! She's Wonderful Woman! She likes to tell people that she's a demi-goddess or some-such from a lost tribe of Amazons living in . . . er . . . somewhere mysterious. And wonderful. Anyhoo, that's not exactly the truth. Really she grew up in Kansas City (the Kansas one) and gosh darn it if she didn't clean that place up. Or at least sort of keep the violence down. Mostly. Gosh and golly she tried hard! After all that hard solo work, Wonderful Woman figured she's ready to join the Champions. So she started showing up at their base, at their press conferences, and at their battles. She just wants to help! Those sillies just don't seem to get it, though. They say she's not ready. Not ready? Well... Haven't they ever heard of on-the-job training? Guess not.

Wonderful Woman has set her mind on joining the Champions. She just needs to prove herself. And she will!

Wonderful Woman is pretty strong. She's pretty tough. She's pretty. She has cool bracelets that let her deflect bullets and other attacks -- but she doesn't always get them between the bullet and her body. Good thing she's pretty tough. And she's got this lasso that makes people not precisely tell the truth but, you know, it's sort of like having a couple beers in you -- you get sorta relaxed and loose with the tongue...

Re: Create a Hero Theme Team!

Lince: Javier Amarillo's grandparents fled Chiquador for the United States a few dictators ago--Chiquador has never had much luck with its leaders. They came legally, as Abuelo Amarillo was a doctor, an educated man who already spoke English well. They moved to Michigan to be as far away from the dictator as possible. Wanting to fit in, they raised Javier's father to be as American as possible, and pretty much the same happened to Javier. He can speak Spanish about as well as anyone who took a year of the language in high school.

This did not, however, prevent Javier from inheriting some sort of family curse; apparently it strikes the youngest living adult male in the Amarillo family when the previous holder dies. This was his great-uncle, who'd disappeared over thirty years before back in Chiquador. As of yet, nothing has been learned about how or where he died. But the death was made clear when Javier spontaneously turned into a lynx. Javier has gained a fair amount of control over the transformation now, but still sometimes turns against his will when angry or horny. When it came to pick a hero name, Javier was surprised to learn that The Lynx, Lynx-Man, Man-Lynx, Lynx Boy and Lady Lynx were already taken. Not that he would have gone for that last one anyway. So the Spanish for "Lynx" was his best choice.

After a couple of solo adventures, Lince was asked to join the Seekers. He likes it fine so far, despite Alternate sometimes slipping and calling him "Jaguar" instead. Lince can transform from human form to a lynx of the same mass almost instantly, though normal clothing is damaged by this. He has not yet been able to achieve a halfway form. He has a nearly magical regenerative capability which does not work vs. wounds inflicted by copper or electricity.

Al Liddel seems like a normal ex-con with a mohawk, trying to keep his head down. But then he saves the day by punching out a tank while wearing a rabbit suit and hood. He decides to stay on the job despite threats from the underworld.

If only he had more control over the powers from the suit he grabbed up as a disguise.

Al randomly grows, shrinks, teleports, tunnels, and slices as the heroic White Rabbit.

let's do a crossover with the villain thread.

Let's see.

Mars and Athena Puzo are super genuises who hate each other. They have opposed each other for decades. Now at the point of their lives where their actions have taken a toll on each other, they have decided to fight a proxy war against each other.

Athena created the Owls of Rome to fight her war.

The Owls of Rome are seven heroes based on toys like GiJoe.

Zealot is barely a hero. She also happens to be the twin sister to Cavalier. Incensed that Mars hired her brother over her, she immediately offered her services to Athena. She prefers working by herself rather than dealing with "lesser talents". In her mind, this is war and the ends will always justify the means, no matter what collateral damage happens. She feels she knows her brother's mind better than he knows himself. She may actually be right about that. Like Cavalier, she too knows a wide variety of weaponry and martial arts.
