My characters

I sent my first art commission off to juggertha@hotmail.com (who has done some work for Pizza Man). I got the finished piece today and was totally blown away by the detail and shading that he put into it. These are characters from the stories I write.

Granish d’Dunnor is a leonine Sachalin. The Sachalin are a race of humans merged to great cats with magic. The three races are leonine (lion merges), tigrine (tiger merges), and jubatine (cheetah merges). The leonine have tawny fur over their bodies, human hands, and catlike faces.

Granish is fun loving, optimistic, and flexible. His desire is to become an engineer, but he is a skilled bard. He is cocky, flashy, and a swashbuckler. He wears flashy, colorful clothes and scarves. He carries a scimitar instead of a straight sword. He has 1 sister who is 7 years younger than he. He is very close to her and protective. He thought she was dead for 7 years, so he cherishes her.

His people live by a simple philosophy—the strong survive, the stronger rule. Granish has seen several flaws in the system (his father abandoned his infant sister in the forest because she had a shrunken arm) and is struggling to find a better way. In the meantime, he still serves his kingdom’s high goddess. He wears a medallion around his neck to show his devotion.

Granish’s father was the most beloved bard in their kingdom until he was killed by a tigrine noble. Granish’s quest for revenge brought the kingdom to civil war. Had he sought justice, things would have been different. He plays the lute and when the killer is finally dead, Granish will be able to share his father’s songs with everyone. Until then, he may pass them from “bard to bard.”

He has a close friend, Karina Tomeii (coming later). She lost her younger sister to the same tigrine that killed Granish’ parents. Karina sees Granish as the older brother she never had. Granish’s weaknesses are wine, women, and song. He lost his eye in a bar fight. He flirted with a human barmaid, her father didn’t like it and cut out his eye. It did require 6 men to hold Granish down, though.

The scene I would like. I see Granish as a very happy person. Dangerous to cross, but happy. He is standing to play the lute with his scimitar on the ground. He is smiling, looking out, with both eyes visible. He is dressed in bright colored clothes of simple cuts.

I will definitely be using Juggertha for future commissions! (And I will be posting them here as they are completed. Rarely more than 1 per month. Will have to skip months also.) I am really pleased and excited!

This is Karina Tomeii at age 19, introduced in the same story as Granish. Artist is Juggertha.

Karina grew up in a traveling band of Fey (half human, half elf outcasts). Like Gypsies, they moved from place to place. When she was 15, she met Granish who became like a brother to her. She is an accomplished pick pocket and cat burglar. She has no training with any weapon except the knife.

Her only sister died in a fire set by Granish’s enemy. At age 15, shortly after her sister’s death, she left her troupe and struck out with Granish.

Spoilered because some of the info above is coming in a future story.

Karina discovered early on that she has a great sense of direction and can tell when people are trying to trick her.

Usually fiesty, she can be surprisingly flirty when the occasion warrants.

Karina dresses like a gypsy when she’s not on a night job. She wears bright colors and large, hoop earrings (silver). When she is picking pockets, she stays in her day clothes. Her assumption (right most of the time) is that marks will overlook the girl in bright clothes who is obviously not trying to blend in.

In the picture, she has spotted a mark who needs to be relieved of a coin purse and is planning her move.

Re: My characters

Just got the next one of my commissions back from Juggertha@hotmail.com. This is Shylocke Averyson, son of a noble from a fallen kingdom. He got bored guarding towns and caravans, so became a bounty hunter. He was good and never lost a bounty. After a couple years as a hunter, he won an archery contest and was invited to join the mercenary unit known as "Dogs of War." He eventually leads it.

Shylocke was devoted to the god Blyde one-hand. Those devotees never use their left hand for sword work. Shylocke has lost his faith but old habits die hard.

In the picture, he has been out on the town one evening when accosted by a thief with incredibly poor judgment. He has just said, "I hope you feel lucky, punk. But you aren't going to be!" :eg:

Re: My characters

Here is Hanna bet Shimeon! Painted by juggertha@hotmail.com. She will be debuting in "To Cleanse the Leper" which is still several stories away. Chronologically, it will be after "My Enemy/My Friend" and maybe after "My Brother's Keeper."

Hanna is Hedaic, the Jewish analog in my setting. She is extremely devout and comes from the Holy Land. She was sent as liaison between her group of holy warriors and the Knights Luminar. Unlike most, she wears the tefillin on her head at all times. She only wraps the arm bands at specified prayer times.

Hanna is also very compassionate. She will only fight to defend herself or innocents. Even then, she hates to take life but sees the necessity against some adversaries. Don't view that as a weakness. She knows how to find weak points in armor and can debilitate foes several times her size with a few well placed strikes.

She is not calling forth a fireball in the picture. She is praying and HaShem is showing his approval of her devotion as happened in Acts and a few times in the Rabbinic literature.

Re: My characters

Blown away is all I can think of to describe opening this one for the first time! Juggertha@hotmail.com really outdid himself this time!

This is Blane and Grimthol Freeman, brothers. Blane is the prophet while Grimthol is the knight. The picture comes from the climactic scene of "My Brother's Keeper" (still to be finished).

[Trying to figure out how much I can say without spoiling the story.]

Grimthol proved himself to be a natural fighter and scholar. He enjoys study more than most of his age, esp. research in theology. He grew up in a religious family, but had a vivid encounter with the Father during the mission to escort Hanna to Castle Osias ("To Cleanse the Leper").

Blane is a promising prophet of the Father whose ministry has been held back by a feud with Grimthol. He is known for his devotion to the Father, compassion for the downtrodden, and zeal against servants of evil.

The foot in the foreground belongs to a summoning mage (they wear grey but he is in shadow). As you can see, the brothers have made their way through several minions and summoned monsters and now face the Big Bad.

I didn't tell Juggy the expressions I wanted this time. He did better than what I would have said, though. Grimthol's look is "Let's finish this, Brother." Blane's look says, "Brother, our Lord has already won the war."

Re: My characters

This will be the last one for a while. Christmas is coming, and this also completes my core characters. Though I have spoken to Juggertha about a later one.

This is Twindove the Wild Elf (or Arcadian as they prefer). I'd say she looks good for just passing 90. She is a member of the spider clan in good standing as can be seen by her tribal colors painted on her face.

Her face paint is 3 narrow strips like a mask around her eyes (light green, dark green, brown*). She is a nature friend and very protective of animals and the earth. She loves violent weather--especially high winds and thunder storms.

Her first appearance will be in the upcoming anthology. Shylocke Averyson meets her in "The Contest." No romance, just friends. He's still kicking himself for sending Elaina north. They also meet another wild elf, one who doesn't wear the paint...

Re: My characters

It's been a while since I had a piece commissioned, and here is the latest!

I choose this board's GoldenAge to see what he could do with Twindove the wild elf. He worked up this piece of Twindove in action. He said he is available for other commissions. I will be using Edd again as soon as I figure out which character is next.

I gave GA the same description of Twindove that I gave Juggertha but specified nothing about pose. This is what he came up with. I'm busting with glee!

Twindove features as a supporting character in the story "The Contest" which can be found in this collection. Shylocke Averyson features in all three of my stories. He meets Twindove in the second and Granish in the third.

My next story featuring Twindove keeps getting pushed back in the writing queue, but, after seeing this pic, I'm inspired to move it up!
