Ranger Choke Hold?

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

Could you describe it? I haven't heard of a Ranger choke hold before, but then again there's still alot I haven't heard before, lol. Is it known by certain styles, and by that I'm including MMA as a style.

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

Instead of "ranger" do you mean "ranged"?

If so, then, assuming the character has a way to make contact at range (stretching, TK, other), then all one has to do is make said contact using the "ranged choke hold" maneuver. Now, as I say that, I too don't ever recall seeing this before and I am making some basic assumptions on how such a thing would work.

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

Or do you mean "a choke hold as used by the US Army Rangers"? In which case looking in Ultimate Martial Arts would likely be your best bet, since a choke hold is given in the "Manoeuvres" list.

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

You taking about the move from Scent of a Woman?

The one that came to mind, is that teached by the unarmed specialists. I am not sure if it's fictional depiction is close to the actual move.

Okay...

Well, do you have some kind of example of this "ranger choke" from a book, video or... something?

Or or you trying to figure out what the actual technique would be based on the name?

Mind you, the only place I can personally recall encountering that term is Scent of a Woman. And I've trained with Force Recon Marines, Navy SEALS, RAF and one actual Army Ranger... my first Sensei was a Jarhead, he introduced me to a lot of interesting people ;)

Not to say that other people don't use such a term, but I've not run into it. Maybe someone else on the forum has...

Now with that said, there are a large variety of choke holds that I have been shown from various combatives and grappling systems, some of which might be a bit difficult to create in HERO since they are compound holds. Many of them can render someone unconscious while crushing the windpipe, separating the vertebra or breaking the neck...

I am not sure if it's fictional depiction is close to the actual move.

Here, check it out from about 4:10 on.

Not sure why video won't actually start at the 4m10s mark as I have indicated :(

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

I wonder if maybe Ranger Choke hold might reference the technique where you jump on an unsuspecting sentry and shap his helmet back as you both fall to the ground. And failing the sentry having a helmet you just go into a rear choke hold. That technique would be useful to a Ranger.

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

There are lots and lots of possible choke holds--blood chokes are different from air chokes, there are several ways to apply either, and that's before we get into ground work like triangle and anaconda chokes.

Fwiw, I don't know if its universal, but I've seen and use chokes to refer to blocking windpipe, and stranglation referring cutting off the blood flow.

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

I've heard of the blood choke/air choke dichotomy, but never heard of choke and strangulation used to refer to different techniques. The Scent of a Woman thing looks more like a pressure point hold than a choke to me. It looks like it would hurt, but not necessarily render someone unconscious. At least not without a lot of hurt first.

I use those terms due to my background, but many arts do not make a significant distinction.

In judo, the term shime (jime) is quite often freely translated as both "strangle" and "choke". Many people don't realize the technical difference in English and thus use the terms interchangeably. So Sankaku-Jime becomes Triangle Choke, even though Triangular Strangle is the accurate term. By contrast, Jigoku-jime is almost always translated as Hell Strangle, probably because it sounds cooler ;)

In BJJ, they mostly use the term choke, but they do tend to stress the difference between blood choke and wind/air choke when they talk about the actual mechanics.

While there are pressure points in the neck, his fingers really aren't in the right place to hit them.

His grip on the lapels/tie is potentially tightening the collar to produce a strangle. The grip on the throat adds to the pressure.

Of course, it's hard to say what the real intent is since he's not actually trying to hurt the other actor...

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

Well to answer the op's question, I'd buy it as as choke manuever and buy maybe a level or two just for the choke and call it Ranger Choke. It think what the movie is supposed to show is that he is using his hand to crush the trachea.

Re: Ranger Choke Hold?

The Choke Hold maneuver in Martial Arts is generic and can represent any number of techniques. In essence, the maneuver is the mechanic and the specific technique is an FX.
