What "Pulp" have you read lately ?

I just thought that I would start a new thread to ask other fans of the Pulp genre what "pulp" or pulp style books they have been reading recently. Recently I have discovered a series of books featuring a two fisted American hero named "Hardluck" Hannigan , written by Bill Craig. The first book in the series is "Emerald Death" and already (i've read the first eighty or so pages ) we have an American adventurer in Africa in the 30's involved with a beautiful aviatrix, her adopted father (who apparently studied in Tibet alongside one "Kent Allard"), nazis with a giant airship (with its own squadron of fighters on board),and a race to find an emerald with mystical properties. Oh and an evil nazi mystic wearing a steel mask ( this is an idea that my co referee and I have used in our own pulp game, well before I had ever heard of these books). What more could a pulp fan want ? Oh yes and an escape by aircraft with the hero tied to the outside of the fuselage (sort of like in "The Mummy"). This is the first of a series and looks as if it could be a lot of fun. Now the question I have is "What "pulp" style books have the other contributors to the "Hero Games" forums been reading and / or what do they recommend to the rest of us ?

Re: What "Pulp" have you read lately ?

It's funny, I've done very little reading of actual Pulp titles although my Dad went throw a radio serials period, so I've heard my share of recordings.

Based on a comment by Steve Long, I'd really like to get into reading some of the many tales about The Spider. There's a very cool looking reprint of the "Black Police" trilogy re-titled The Spider Vs. The Empire State. In this title The Spider takes on an army of jack-booted fascist thugs that have managed to take over the New York State Legislature.

The closest I've to come w/ current reading is the Pulp Hero book itself. It's nice to have a feeling for the entire genre and I'm sure the book has a nice bibliography for further reading. Most of my reading time is being taken up by my research for running a Pulp Game set in San Francisco and is currently confined to historical research.

Justified is well worth the watch but it literally rolls out like Elmore Leonard is telling you the story so, best to get the DVD and kick back on a weekend binge. :D

Justified is damn good story-telling and it does play out like a crime pulp. (I was happy to see Graham Yost, the was the force behind the short-lived Boomtown, resurface with Justified.)

ABC's The River is unadulterated pulpy horror goodness. It isn't perfect, but I give them high marks for trying something different and for an having an interesting story-telling style.

Alrighty, back to reading my books about SF.

I really enjoy Edgar Rice Burroughs' stuff - his writing style reminds me of campaign journals.

I also enjoy the Indiana Jones novels - thought not Pulp per se - very fun, light, reads that can fill one's mind with adventure ideas (I had started reading them to get ideas for the World of Indian Jones Master Book game by West End Games - which I feel was a great game!)

If you want to go "off world" with your pulp adventures - the John Carter series by Burroughs just can't be beat. The old RPG Space 1889 has really cool information that could easily be converted to Hero System (which I hope to do some day).

Any of the Shadow books or Doc Savage.

The book King Solomon's Mines (not the movie!!!) is very good and though I cannot remember the author's name he also wrote a very cool book called She which was very good.

H Rider Haggard' date=' and yes.[/quote']

"She" (and "King Solomon's Mines" for that matter) are part of a sort of a series in which characters cross over. I have several of them but i'm not sure if I have them all. The "She" books are "She", "Ayesha : Or the return of She", "Wisdom's Daughter" and "She and Alan", which leads to "Alan Quartermain", "Alan's Wife and Other Stories" and several others via the character of Alan Quartermain, the "great white hunter". It has been said that Sir Henry Rider Haggard invented the "Lost Race" novel with these books !

"Corpse" you might want to check out "The Spider Chronicles" edited by Joe Gentile, Garrett Anderson and Lori Gentile and published by "Moonstone Books". It contains nineteen new "Spider" stories by writers such as Will Murray,Steve Englehart, Ron Fortier and John Jakes. Published in 2007. (Assuming , of course, that you haven't already !)

Domino Lady: Sex As A Weapon. Featuring teamups with Airboy and the Black Bat (who was half Batman/half Daredevil).

Gotta love Moonstone Books. They've done justice to all their material, Especially The Black Bat....whom DC continues to steal from to this day, heh... If anyone ever gets a chance to attend a pulp seminar when Moonstone is involved, take it. Well worth the time.

I've got about a hundred Doc Savage and The Avenger paperbacks from when they reprinted all those pulp magazines as novels in the '60s and '70s. Probably read 75 of them so far.

Also have 4 neat Doc Savage hardcovers from Golden Press that I got for $1.00 each at a used book store. There were at least six (they're numbered), but I've never seen them anywhere else.

"Fantomas," by Marcel Allain - french pulpesque criminal/antihero. Not my favorite of the European pulp-style characters, but an interesting read. Followed up in succession with: "The Devil Doctor," by Sax Rohmer (it's Fu Manchu, doesn't get pulpier); "Jack O' Judgement," by Edgar Wallace (vigilante versus the underworld by the author of the 'Just Men' series); and "The Green Rust," also by Edgar Wallace (bioterrorism in the pulp era).

the hunt novels

Just finished A Princess of Mars. I wanted to read it before the John Carter movie came out. I've also read a few H.P. Lovecraft stories: "Dagon", "The Statement of Randolph Carter", and the "Herbert West: Reanimator" stories.

EDIT: Forgot The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, Playback, and Lady in the Lake.
