Things That Go Bump in the Night

Since it's mentioned on the front page, I thought I'd give a brief rundown on the project.

Things is intended to be a cross-genre supplement for GMs looking for classic horror elements to include in their games. The book will be divided into nine section, with each section covering a 'type' of supernatural monster of being. Thus, it will cover ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the like. The book will also introduce readers to the witiko (or wendigo), contain character sheets for such entities as Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Jack the Ripper, and so on. I also plan on including some modern horrors, such as Greys, Men in Black, Mothman, and if I can find enough info, Slenderman and other modern meme-based beings.

For those who own issues of Digital Hero, the material will be familiar, as much of it appeared there. However, I will be updating everything to 6E, adding new material, and editing previous published material to improve the quality.

As a final note, the book will not be simply a collection of character sheets. The bulk of the book will discuss the history of different supernatural creatures, look at historical examples, and offer a listing of similar beings from around the world. However, in the interests of space, most of the material will concern Europe and European examples of vampires, werewolves, and so on. I'd love to do a comprehensive fully international book on the supernatural for the HERO System, but such a volume would dwarf my Asian Bestiaries and almost certainly end up as thick as the Hero System Bestiary.

Here are the nine planned sections of the book:

Things That Go Bump In The Night (ghosts), Blood Brothers (vampires), The Beast Within (werewolves), Back from the Grave (zombies and wights), Eaters of the Dead (ghuls), "It's Alive!" (constructs), Witiko (the wendigo), A Pair of Jacks (Springheeled Jack and Jack the Ripper), Twentieth Century Terrors (assorted 'modern' monsters, such as Grays, Men in Black, and Slender Man).

... Slender Man?

I have no real ideal, except for the image of Sadiko from Ringu, and the ghost/killer from One Missed Call. I wonder if Slender Man is something of an urban legen 'for real', like The Hook and The Babysitter Killer ("Go check on the children.").

No, it's more of an artificially created monster such as any horror writer might invent for a story, except it IS like genuine folklore in being a collaborative phenomenon.

Re: Things That Go Bump in the Night

Sounds like my kinda book, and will add this to my list.

So, this thread reminded me that I was curious about the whole Slenderman thing, which led me off into creepypasta and Fear Mythos territory, which I'm now considering adding into my setting and now I really kinda do want to see your write up for Slendy, if not the rest of the Fears.

I feel like there's some sort of causality loop going on here

p.s. OH GOD THE RAPTURE IS BURNING makes for interesting bedtime reading

Re: Things That Go Bump in the Night

Sounds like a great book

and since it does not look like there will be any Horror or Clthulu Hero books anytime soon

these might serve my thirst for horror gaming for a while

MAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Re: Things That Go Bump in the Night

The title has been changed to avoid conflict.

It's now: Spirits, Spooks, and Spectres: A HERO System Sourcebook for the Strange and Supernatural

And, to highlight the diverse contents, the book might just be Ghosts, Ghouls, and Golems: A HERO System Sourcebook for the Strange and Supernatural.

*blink* How will the recent "Slender Man Incident" affect this book? Is there any chance that Slenderman be taken out of the book?

For thoes who do not know, up in Wisconson, two 12 year old girls ALMOST stabed another 12 year old girl to death in order to please the Slender Man, who they read about from Creepy Pasta stories. They are both being trialed as adults (if you comit 1st degree atempted murder or worse, in Wisconson you can be tried as an adult if your 10 or over).
