Well Friends and neighbors, Here's the Phantom's Challenge to all you Champions GMs out there: Create a Magic Girl or Mystic teen in training for your Champions Campaign and intro them into the CU history timeline or better yet design one to compete or work with the Court Of Dreams campaign.

Re: Teen Mystics or Magical Girls For CHAMPIONS campaigns

I don't know anything about the Magic Girl genre; so, I have no idea how they would react to traditional heroes, but I would assume that each such character would have her own perspective on the issue. As far as how the super community would react with Magic Girl community, that would depend on the campaign world. In a world that already has a super-mystic community, they would probably just be another sub-community within the over-all community. If there is no definite difference between the regular super community and the super mystic community, Magic Girls would probably just be another super hero in the eyes of other supers and the general public.

You already know of Robert Trueheart, a.k.a. Lady Heart (s/he is in your campain, silly...especaly at Real Roleplaying.com).

As for how s/he would be viewed in the mystical comunity. Basicly like a flegling bird, taken under the wing of good 'white' mystics, and planed to be made into chicken dinner by bad 'black' mystics.

The superhero comunity in general views magical girl superheros much like thay view other teenage and tweenage superheros...ranging from 'thanks for the suport kid' to 'quit now...it is to dangerous for someone so young'. Untill the MG proves herself, she may never be seen as an equal in the superhero comunity (but this is true for all superheros).

As for the public, that depends on if true magic's existance is known to the general public. In most superhero universes, the public dosen't truly know that true magic exists (there are belevers, but most people view 'mystic' superheros as other type of superheros, if thay know thay exist at all). Thay think 'mutant' or 'victom of an increable acident' when somebody says thay wield mystical powers. This is helpful, as if most people know that forces like Tyranon exist, thay would be driven crazy with worry.

But, basicly the final choice as GM is up to you.

Um...forgot the how magical girls view evey other superhero. Well, that depends on the individual magical girl. It would depend on how thay are treated by other heros (both there own age, and the adult population). Thoes who basicly say 'quit' thay will be pasivly hostal twords (go away, granpa). Thoes who are more suported thay will happely suport, even takeing there words to heart (more likely to obay when told to not fight Mechanon or Doctor Destroyer, for example).

Shrug, magical girl would get a quick invite into the teen titans, where Starfire would immediate explode from cuteness overload (deafening the rest of the team and a 3 mile radius around Titans Tower with a Super Sonic "SQUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

But how would the rest of the DC Universe react to japanies style magical girls? Um...that universe has Zantana...and Amathiss(bad spelling. The princess of Gem World)...so, never mind.

Yes, but (classic) Amethyst doesn't have magic on Earth, and in any dimension she would have magic, she ages to her early 20s, so she probably doesn't qualify for Maho Shoujo (the current Amethyst is 17 and stuck on Nilaa, so it's debatable as to wether she'd qualify either. The animated one (Opal curse Cartoon Network for taking off the DC block) probably qualifies, but...). Zatanna (and Raven, for that matter) is a girl who uses magic, which is different from a magical girl.

It's not that DC doesn't have magical girls (pre-CRISIS, we had Lana Lang become Insect Queen occasionally, and the Yellow Peri, but we lost them when Superboy was excised from Superman's history. Jade (Alan Scott's daughter), the Earth-born angel Supergirl and Mary Marvel could qualify, and there's Kwai from Milestone-Earth's Blood Syndicate), but DC (the corporate entity) seems to have developed a severe hatred of 'fun' characters in the past decade and feels that they need to remake them in angst-ier forms. Right now, the closest thing we've got to a Magical Girl at DC is Arisa from Green Lantern (she still has a presence there, doesn't she).

As for how would the JLA react to a Magical Girl:

SUPERMAN: Would not be happy. He wouldn't be mad at the Magical Girl. He'd see her as more proof of the nobility of humanity. But he'd round on Mipple, Meeple, and any other 'mascots' and chew them the Hell out. "How dare you go around recruiting children for your private war!"

BATMAN: Would see the Magical Girl as proof of the determination of the human spirit. He might even treat her with kid gloves (like he treated Halo, another candidate for Magical Girl, in Batman and the Outsiders) depending on how well the writer 'gets' Frank Miller. The 'mascots' though... "Explain to me again why you picked up a preteen girl, gave her the magical equivalent of a gun, and then tossed her out into your private war without any training whatsoever!!"

WONDER WOMAN: Wouldn't be upset with them at all (female empowerment and all that). She would offer to teach them Hand-to-Hand combat skills in case they're ever in a situation where they can't use magic.

GREEN LANTERN: Like I said, Hal knows Arisa, and she's as gutsy as any GL above the age of Majority, so he wouldn't be too concerned about the MG's age (he would be nervous if she tried to flirt with him. Like I said, Hal knows Arisa). And he met the Guardians, and if the mascot doesn't seem as incompetent as the Guardians, he has no problem with them.

FLASH: Barry would be like the Batman. Wally would be on the phone with Dick to see if they could find a spot for her on the Titans (you don't give a preteen the magical equivalent of a gun and the toss her out on the battlefield without any training whatsoever).

MARTIAN MANHUNTER: Would be reminded of his daughter and offer to mentor the MG, and would occasionally check up on them with his shapeshifting powers (it would be interesting for Rei Hino, Shinto Miko to meet Rei Hino, reporter for Daily Planet Tokyo, ne?

AQUAMAN: No idea. Maybe a little of Batman's attitude, but with more gruff.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica is one series I would suggest watching for a different take on why magical girls exist. It is a startling deconstruction of the genre and gives it a dramatic spin. You can find it on crunchyroll.com for viewing.

Re: Teen Mystics or Magical Girls For CHAMPIONS campaigns

Avengers take:

Iron Man: Totally dismissive of her, pretends she doesn't exist really (Tony doesn't believe in magic and is pretty dismissive of ANYONE really until they stand up to him.)

Hulk: Would become overly protective and HULK SMASH any villain stupid enough to target an attack anywhere in her general facility.

Wasp: Would go all "mom" on her and try to protect her and take care of her. Would be totally against any preteens on the team, but would be heavily training them to be ready if they were confronted (and for possible team membership once they were old enough).

Hank: We have a little girl on our team? Huh, weird (back to tinkering)

Captain America: Would probably be daddy to Wasp's Mommy. I.E. taking care of her and training her. Would likely get teary eyed about not having a family and minor "flashback" to some girl he thought was the "one" back in the day.

Black Panther: Some slightly understated verbal attack on the nationality that "spawned" her then leave her alone.

Hawkeye: Bad Joke after Bad Joke at her expense, but honestly his attempt to befriend her. He just wouldn't "get" kids.

Thor: really hard to tell. Everything from treating her like a Warrior Woman, every bit as capable of defending herself as any member of the team, to outright Anger at a child that young being put into danger. NO sexism tho (Sif would castrate him.)

I am probably forgetting someone, but it's a start.

Re: Teen Mystics or Magical Girls For CHAMPIONS campaigns

DC's Amethyst in her original incarnation was absolutely a Japanese-style magical girl who happened to be made in America. That she aged into an adult form doesn't disqualify her; several classic Japanese magical girls, notably Creamy Mami and Magical Emi, did the same thing. There was even one magical girl, Bewitched Agnes, who was actually pushing thirty and being driven into forced retirement!

Marvel has a couple of characters that, if not full-fledged magical girls, come so close as to make no difference. These include Magick (Ilyana Rasputin) and Ilsa Bloodstone (who was TOTALLY NOT influenced by Joss Whedon's Buffy Summers, who herself was TOTALLY NOT influenced by Devil Hunter Yohko, even though they totally and obviously were).

Humm...Avengers list is OK, but your forgeting a few recent members. Spider-Man, Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew), Justice (curently of the Avengers Inintive), Speedball (dito, but you have to remember that thay darkened his charater considerly since the Stanford Incident...he is now a cutter), Luke Cage, and the most important of all, Doctor Stephen Strange.

Re: Teen Mystics or Magical Girls For CHAMPIONS campaigns

Let me think...

Spider-Man: He tends to be a pasive mentor more than an active mentor. He'll probaly be quick to offer some homespun advice, if asked (most likely from remembered conversations from Aunt May and/or Unckle Ben), and is also quick to state that his own privet life (which, no, he will not go into much detail about), is far from perfect. He is open for heart to heart conversations on his own time table. As for the mascot, as long as he/she has the best intrests of the magical girl at heart...(most of his lack of tude about teen supers is based on his own past experences as a teen super, without much of a suport system of his own)

Speedball: Let's face it, Robbie is messed up. In spite regaining his name and powers, he cuts himself and wishes he died in Stanford with the others. He will probaly be the first to stress training, training, and more training. Just so that she dosen't make the same mistake as he did (which was let Namorita get into combat with Nitro inthe first place).

Luke Cage: Cage is mostly all 'street', and would have a more pratical advice for the magical girl. He would proably want them off the hard streets, but would stick his nose out of there buisness.

Justice/Spider-Woman: I realy have no ideal.

Doctor Strange: He would proably try to replace (or, at least supliment) the advisor massot and take the magical girl under his wing. He most of all has a good ideal what the magical girl is going through. While training them, he will work on faceing the big bad himself (this, sparing the young ones from this task). If thay must face the big bad, he will make shure thay have all the suport he can give them, including training fitting of an ex-Sorcerer Supream.

Iron Fist: Another one who is likely to know the mystical conections of the magical girl, he will strive to teach martial arts and meditation to help expand the magical girls magical protental.

Re: Teen Mystics or Magical Girls For CHAMPIONS campaigns

As I don't play much, I figured that I wouldn't be posting here any more. So much for my guess. I don't think Superman, Batman, and the others would ask the animal companions of the girls for an explanation. Instead, they'd ask the girls if they had any idea where the powers come from. SunSpell (Judy Kaplan who replaced Tim Clark) explains that higher powers of good made the choice. She adds that she occasionally hears a female Japanese voice guiding her. She believes that this woman is a previous SunSpell and that she was a ninja.
