Description:

Nobuo Matsuri is thirty-two, but his male pattern baldness makes him look ten years older. He's deceptively fat-looking; under that initial soft layer, he's all muscle. Nobuo has full lips, a thick nose, pudgy cheeks, small beady eyes, and a mole between his eyebrows. People are constantly amazed he landed such a hot wife.

 

In civilian life, Nobuo wears a cheap salaryman suit or other low-brow middle-class garb. His "ninja" outfit is the generic black "mook ninja" outfit made popluar by the media.

 

In civvies, Nobuo has a nervous habit of scratching his head; this vanishes entirely when he's in ninja mode.

 

BACKGROUND

Nobuo Matsuri is a typical Japanese salaryman. He has a low-paying, dead-end job in customer service at Bataph Foods, an incompetent boss who treats him like dirt, a mother-in-law who constantly nags him and his lovely wife about his shortcomings, and two young children that find him kind of embarrassing. But Nobuo is also a renegade ninja, formerly the top assassin of the Nakuru clan. When he fell in love, Nobuo broke the Iron Law, and has been sentenced to death.

 

Nobuo loves his wife and his family, his ordinary job (even if his idiot boss gets on his nerves) and his ordinary life. Unfortunately, every so often assassins from his clan track him down and he must kill them. More troublingly, Nobuo often finds himself in circumstances where reason and negotiation don't work and those close to him are in mortal danger. Then he must reluctantly use his ninja skills to eliminate the problem

PERSONALITY

Nobuo is a sweet-tempered, patient man who hates violence and killing. He often seems like a polite pushover and is often taken advantage of by others. But when he must, he becomes once again the cold, merciless assassin he was raised to be.

 

Nobuo loves his wife and family, and will do anything to protect them...even his awful mother-in-law. He's also loyal to his co-workers, and prides himself on giving good customer service.

POWERS/TACTICS

Nobuo is trained in the use of ninja weapons and skills, and is amazingly fast for a man of his bulk. He's capable of killing a full-sized man with two fingers using the Full Moon Finger attack He has access to a variety of ninja weapons and gimmicks, but will only have one or two on his person at a time.

 

Nobuo prefers not to kill, and will attempt to use reason and negotiation to solve problems. Often, he will find excuses to give opponents a second or even third chance to repent, or at least back the hell off. If this fails, he will kill the target as quickly and painlessly as possible.

 

CAMPAIGN USE

Nobuo Matsuri is the main character of "Ninja Papa", created by Yasuhito Yamamoto beginning in 2006. His obvious use is in Ninja Hero but he'd also fit in a Dark Champions game that doesn't mind a little comedy. Player characters might investigate why there are reports of Nakuru clan ninja fighting each other, and corpses killed using their methods that neither the police or the media seem to be investigating. Or they might be called in because terrorists have made threats against Bataph Foods' employees and Nobuo must try to conceal his ninja activities while helping out against the attackers.

 

If Nobuo needs to be more powerful, pump his DEX and combat levels, and give him some defenses, If he needs to be less powerful, remove his "superpowers" and be just a normal ninja. Nobuo Hunts only those that are a direct threat to the lives of those he cares about. He'll gladly back off if someone shows they;re not a menace anymore.

 

 

_Supporting Characters_

 

Aya: Age 28, still has her good looks and excellent figure, even after having two children. She's deeply in love with her husband Nobuo, and firmly believes in his goodness. She is supposedly unaware that he's an actual ninja, but may just have the good sense not to let on.

 

Sora: Ten years old, athletic, is sometimes disappointed by his "uncool" father but loves him anyway.

 

Umi: Eight years old, bright, has inherited her father's nose. Is appreciative of her father's protectiveness and believes in him.

 

Mother in Law: A horrid hag who is deeply disappointed that her lovely daughter married such a loser and loses no opportunity to remind him of this. Lives with Nobuo's family, and was a co-signer on the mortgage. She has a bad hip. One chapter indicates that she's actually a formidable secret martial artist in her own right, but it's unclear how seriously the reader is supposed to take it.

 

Manager: A bitter forty-five-year old who's the boss of the customer service department. An incompetent who has risen as high as he can thanks to the Peter Principle, Manager is sexist, racist, lazy and is more concerned that his workers come in on time than that they actually give good customer service. He's abusive to his subordinates and a lickspittle to those above him. He is trapped in a loveless arranged marriage and has two children who he rarely sees by his own preference. Gives really bad advice.

 

Noguchi: An attractive office lady in the customer service department who admires Nobuo for his integrity and kind nature. She was sexually assaulted in college, and has a strong distrust of most men, especially lecherous ones. Her career has largely stalled out due to her habit of sticking up for herself and her co-workers, especially to the Manager. She's quite outspoken and dignified, which the Manager finds unbecoming in a "girl". She's attracted to the mysterious "ninja" who saved her from attempted rape one night, but is unaware that was Nobuo.

Hair Snipe: Nobuo plucks a hair from his head, and flicks it into the mouth of the attacking animal, aiming for the throat. This causes the beast to calm down and pay attention to the tickling in its throat until it's cleared. The downsides of the technique are a) you have to be directly in front of the animal's maw, usually while it's attacking you; and B) the hair you use will never grow back, and Nobuo's balding as it is.

 

The first three volumes of "Ninja Papa" are legally available through JManga. It is an 18+ title (Nobuo and Aya have an active sex life.)
