Pariah
There seems to be a lot of passion about music here. This is a little game to open up conversations about music. Each week, I (or a designated guest commenter) will post a music category and ask for three responses. Respond in as much detail as you like: Song titles, background information, commentary, video links, whatever. Have fun with it, and share your musical knowledge, expertise, and opinions. Pariah
Re: Monday Morning Music Trios We'll start with an easy one. This week's musical topic: Three songs you liked in high school.
Pariah
Re: Monday Morning Music Trios My three choices: 1) "Hello Again" by The Cars - I think everyone owned Heartbeat City back in the day. It was the first album I ever purchased with my own money (on cassette, no less!). The album spawned several big hits for The Cars. "Hello Again" wasn't one of the hits, but it was my favorite song in the album. 2) "You're the Inspiration" by Chicago - Chicago 17 was another album that everyone owned. Without this song, I would never have become interested in Chicago--and never discovered the really awesome music they made early in their career. 3) "No One Is To Blame" by Howard Jones - I actually prefer the minimalist album version of this song to the Phil Collins-produced remake that sold so many copies. I need to get that album on CD some time. Your turn! Kaze9999
Ternaugh
Re: Monday Morning Music Trios 1. "Jump" by Van Halen. The song seemed to be everywhere. Didn't really get into Van Halen much beyond 1984, however. 2. "AD 1928/Rockin' the Paradise" by Styx. Used to listen to this and Grand Illusion from a friend's LP while playing RPGs. 3. "Leave It" by Yes. Bought on cassette from the now long-gone Odyssey Records on Las Vegas Blvd. It was a 24 hour record store, and I used to walk over in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep and shop for music and video games. Zen Archer
Re: Monday Morning Music Trios 1. "Thela Hun Ginjeet" by King Crimson. KC were my favorite band for many years, and their Discipline album is a classic. 2. "Change" by Tears For Fears. The so-called New Wave tossed up some really interesting pop stuff. 3. "Moon Over Marin" by The Dead Kennedys. A power ballad of sorts.

Or a hit in one region of a country and not the rest of it. "Hello Again" got so much airplay in my hometown that I was certain it had to have been a hit. I looked it up, and evidently it did make #20 in the US Billboard charts.
ghost-angel
Re: Monday Morning Music Trios 1. F-ing Hostile by Pantera, the entire Vulgar Display Of Power album was a cherished bit of music, but that one song described my general feeling towards high school. 2. Sad But True by Metallica, a song I could put on repeat for hours. I think the best track off the black album. 3. Thunder Kiss '65 by White Zombie, technically just the second half of HS for this one - I moved to southern California, turned on the radio and went looking for something suitable. I hit KNAC, which had a suitable "metal" call sign, and then they played this bit - I was instantly sold.

Pariah
Re: Monday Morning Music Trios 1. "You Know My Name" by Chris Cornell (Casino Royale) - With respect to Adele, this is the best Bond song since Duran Duran's "A View to a Kill", and maybe since Wings' "Live and Let Die". 2. "Titles (Chariots of Fire)" by Vangelis (Chariots of Fire) - You know this song. Admit it, it's going through your head right now. Not Vangelis' best work and not even the best in the film ("Five Circles", IMHO), it's his signature piece. It's a defining moment in cinematic electronic music. This, along with Cosmos, introduced me to Vangelis. 3. "Gollum's Song" by Emilíana Torrini (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) - Although songs from the other two movies were nominated for Ocsars ("May It Be" and "Into the West"), I think this is the best song in the series. It has unparalleled weight and pathos. It carries listeners through a wide range of emotions from sadness to anger to spite and finally to hopelessness. I makes you feel a little more sorry and sympathetic for the wretched Gollum.
death tribble
Re: Monday Morning Music Trios That song from The South Park movie. Not Blame Canada. The other one. A song so ingenious, so evil that you want to sing it on leaving the cinema. Pure genius Porcelin by Moby from Playing by Heart Siouxsie and the Banshees Face to Face from the second Batman movie featuring Devito as the Penguin and Pfieffer as Catwoman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI_ghmRZ9AA
Ternaugh
Re: Monday Morning Music Trios 1. The best song from the Ghostbusters soundtrack. 2. A strong Paul Williams song from the Brian DePalma Faustian tale, Phantom of the Paradise. 3. One of the quieter songs from Labyrinth, which fits the action onscreen beautifully. By the way, the choreographer for this sequence was Cheryl McFadden--better known as Gates McFadden--from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Pariah
Here are my three C songs: "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas https://www.youtbe.com/watch?v=2X_2IdybTV0 Quite possibly my favorite song ever. I love this song--love its energy, love its musicianship, love its lyrics. It's become something of a theme song for me. Once upon a time, I had even an email address that was 'carryonwaywardson@________.com'. True story. "Cold and Clear" by Proto-Kaw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8wjavnJz7c The spiritual successor (and predecessor!) to Kansas, Proto-Kaw re-formed in 2002 and have released three new albums since. This is a track from their 2011 album Forth. Kerry Livgren's exquisite songwriting is apparent on this hard-rocking piece of progressive deliciousness from America's heartland. "Carve Away the Stone" by Rush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtsXaGUpG5w This song brings back so many memories, mostly of a metaphorical stone that I was trying to chip away, carve away, and/or roll away at the time. Much better now, thanks. (And if you can tell me what the time signature progressions through the bridge and chorus are, you've got a better ear than I have.) Bazza
okay, this is slightly off topic but wanted to share as it is a musical trio. Played these songs one after the other, all women artists. I think they sort off tell a story and follow on from one another. 1. Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compared 2 U 2. Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive 3. Pat Benatar's Heartbreaker
