mattingly
If you were putting together an "all-star" team of urban fantasy characters, who would be on your "must have" list?

Lord Liaden
Can't do "all-star urban fantasy" without the Winchester brothers from the Supernatural television series. You might also consider Selene from the Underworld films. She might be too high-powered, unless you intend to include Hellboy.
Nolgroth
You're worried about a gun-toting she-vampire when you posited the "never can die, slays demons and angels before breakfast" Winchester boys? You funny. How big is this team? Four, six, Legion of Supernatural Heroes? My pics from the Dresdenverse: Harry Dresden, Karin Murphy and "Grasshopper". ( Had a lot more options, but condensed to this list.) The aforementioned Winchester boys. Maybe even Castiel in his full-on Angel of the Lord stage (before angels got nerfed). Faith, Willow, and Xander from Buffy. (Buffy herself whines too much about relationships.) Wesley and Gunn from Angel. (Angel himself whines too much about Buffy.) The Witnesses (Abby and Ichabod) from Sleepy Hollow. (Love the way they interact,) I'll leave it at that dirty (bakers') dozen.

If I can have Anita (I killed the Mother of all Vampires) Blake, you can have Selene. Anita is a Mary Sue of the Superman degree

If there was ever an example of "writer's fiat," it's the Winchesters. Not to take anything away from the brothers as characters, but they've gotten repeated massive help and ridiculously lucky breaks to keep punching so far above their weight class. I would hope Dave Mattingly would use them more reasonably.

I would hope Dave Mattingly would use them more reasonably. I'm not arguing a bit. Still, even before it went crazy angel-demon wars on us, the Winchesters were doing some pretty heavy things with "standard" ghosts and ghoulies. The angel-demon wars stuff was insane and yet somehow still entertaining.
mattingly
Thanks for the suggestions, all. Kahuna's Bro, I had never watched Monster Force. I'll see what I can dig up, in terms of episodes. Lord Liaden, Selene from Underworld is one of the options I'm considering. I want to make sure there are enough female character choices. Nolgroth, for team size, I'd like at least six, preferably closer to a dozen so that there'll be plenty of options.

mattingly
Thanks, GD. I hadn't heard of that one. I did think of one more that should go on my list -- The Librarian. It gets rerun enough that many people should know of him. Plus, it gives me a know-it-all in the group.
BlueCloud2k2
Not exactly pop-culture icon here, but Barbara Everette and Janae from Princess of Wands and Queen of Wands by John Ringo. Barb's a soccer-mom-a-saurus imbued with power by the Christian God to kill demons and kick ass in His Name. Janae is a stripper, a professional escort, and high-priestess of Freya. LouGoncey
I would love to see people's write-ups of Jack Burton -- his own real ability is when he says "It's all in the reflexes." And I guess the ability to think he is the main character of the story when he is actually a sidekick. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is also interesting because it was originally written by W. D. Richter to be a western.
