NuSoardGraphite
This February, the Wachowskis are poised to set trends once again with their first Space Opera epic; Jupiter Ascending. It looks fantastic. 3 trailers have been released so far. Check them out. It releases February 6th. I plan to catch this one at the theaters. I saw trailer #3 in front of The Battle of Five Armies and it was the most impressive thing I've seen on the big screen in a long time. (visually) On a side note: The Wachowskis are delving into subjects that drive conspiracy nuts crazy. With The Matrix it was about the nature of reality and humanities place in it. With Cloud Atlas it was reincarnation and the role of past lives and the transient nature of time. With this one giving yet more conspiracy fodder with earth being embroiled in a secret interplanetary war which is hidden from the population at large and includes large, winged reptoids who apparently can shapeshift. Oh yeah. This is going to drive the alien conspiracy crowd CRAZY.
TheQuestionMan
Some serious kickass, excellent story telling, and some cool SFX. Looking forward to it. QM
Nolgroth
Some of the stuff in the trailers looks awesome (the space ships being primarily my focus). I just don't know about the story though. Some of the scenes were awkward. Does Michael Beine....er, Sean Bean's character die in this one? I think I'll hold out for the DVD release. Though it looks like a lot of movies are starting to drop the DVD format. I saw one advertised today as Digital HD or Blue Ray. No mention of DVD anywhere in there. NuSoardGraphite
Dont tell me you havent moved up to Blu yet Nolgroth. it's been nearly a decade since it's debut. I'm not worried about the story too much. i've pretty much liked everything i've seen from the Wachowskis, so unless their screenwriter is really crappy (like what happened with Man of Steel: zack snyder, awesome director. david goyer, crappy screen writer) i'm sure the story will be fine. Old Man
We only went up to Blu-Ray last year, and then mainly because the primary DVD player was on its deathbed. There's still a significant premium on BR discs compared to DVDs. Jupiter Ascending looks phenomenal but I wonder if I'll be able to see it. I'm way, way behind on my 2014 movies. Xavier Onassiss
Didn't Mel Brooks use this exact same "you're actually a space prince(ss)" plot line in Spaceballs?
NuSoardGraphite
I believe the line in SPACE BALLS is "she's a Druish Princess".

I technically don't even have a working DVD player for my TV. I watch everything on my computer. And no, Blu-Ray just doesn't exactly ring my bell. I will admit that I have been somewhat wanting to upgrade to Blu-Ray for the purposes of archiving and backup. Then I look at how inexpensive an external 1-2TB hard drive is and I get my mind right. Maybe the story won't be bad, but I will be calling the Princess girl Neo throughout the movie.

I getcha. thus far i have yet to find anything which exceeds the quality of blu ray. streaming is generally worse with a few exceptions (heck, the clarity of dvd is generally better than streaming) and thus i havent moved away from it yet, but i am in the planning stages of putting together a custom HTPC with the future of all digital/streaming in mind. (Thinking 16gb ram, quad core cpu, 1TB internal hybrid drive and at least a 2TB external for backup. will probably include a legacy blu ray/dvd drive so i can convert my extensive dvd collection over) Maybe the story won't be bad, but I will be calling the Princess girl Neo throughout the movie. Then i guess we'll have to call Channing Tatum Trinity

I always leave the left half of my brain at home when going to the movies. I enjoy them far more that way.
Old Man
Channing Tatum looks really bad with a beard. I'll probably have to wait for this one to come out on cable. If it were a SF story with depth or innovation it'd be high on my list, but everything I'm hearing indicates that it's a shallow, effects-laden, visually impressive space opera, which is kind of disappointing considering it's the Wachowskis. Vanguard
I've seen it described as the Battlefield: Earth of the Teens. I won't see it at the cinema, unless someone else buys the ticket. Yeah, I'm going to have to disagree with that statement. Channing Tatum looks really bad with a beard. I'll probably have to wait for this one to come out on cable. Eh, I read somewhere that he had to wear a prosthetic to change the shape of his jaw so that might be why he looks a bit off. It also cause him to have trouble speaking, or so they say. I didn't notice anything but then . . . that's why they do multiple takes for scenes. Not really seeing where the story doesn't have depth. As for innovation, the scenes where the fighters are going at it and the wings are shifting to accommodate the various maneuvers and such seems pretty innovative to me. I dunno, maybe I just do set my bar high when it comes to the movies anymore but I didn't walk out of there going "Wow, that's 2hrs of my life I won't be getting back". Anyway, I thought it was a good movie. I hope the criticisms don't deep six any chance of a sequel but it sounds like they might.
AlHazred
I haven't seen it yet (considering going on Monday), but I've heard that the movie can sit next to Blade Runner, The Fifth Element, and Star Wars. If you put them all on the same shelf.
NuSoardGraphite
Unfortunately it is not making very much at the box office. 19 million opening weekend or some such. I saw it earlier (14th) and its a good movie. Reviews said the plot was nonsensical. It wasn't. Reviews said the movie was derivative, it really wasn't. (some Sci-fi cliches as nearly all sci-fi movies have, but there was enough of its own thing going on here to distinguish itself) What the reviewers missed, and likely 90% of the movie-going audience, is that this movie follows the Wachowski's M.O. to a tee. The Matrix was about the illusory nature of reality and humanity being completely unaware of that fact. There were elements of spirituality sprinkled throughout, but it was mainly about the nature of reality. V for Vendetta was about standing up to the Orwellian state. Cloud Atlas was about reincarnation and how the human spirit is immortal and how we revisit relationships in all their variations throughout our existences. And now Jupiter Ascending is about how humanity is unaware of an intergalactic war for the very essence of humanity going on around them, that human life did not begin on earth, but elsewhere in the universe and that life (especially human life) is found absolutely everywhere. All of these aspects, when put together, form the very core of the conspiracy and new age movements. This is the story the Wachowski brothers have been telling throughout their various properties. If you are aware of these themes, you'll get the film and probably enjoy it immensely. You can still enjoy it without picking up on these themes (there were many themes in this film but the one I mentioned is the core theme) because the action, sfx etc are all enjoyable. My wife went into this movie with zero expectations whatsoever and she said she LOVED it. And even though Channing Tatum is one of her least favorite actors, she found him tolerable in this movie. I will be getting this one on blu ray when it is released for home discs.

W/the 2nd monitor. In a tiny little window. While I'm doing three other things. So I don't waste two precious hours of my life like this poor soul did.... http://uproxx.com/filmdrunk/2015/02/review-jupiter-ascending-is-like-battlefield-earth-without-the-excuse-of-scientology/

However its quite clear reading his assessment of thr film that he missed its point, which was quite clear. On the surface it was quite obviously about the evils of unrestrained capitalism. The main villain(s) are inasnely wealthy industrialists. So wealthy that they no longer identify withr the average person. in fact they are so far removed that they see people as comodities to be exploited, harvested and sold. I would say that is the main plot/theme. But as i mentioned before, this movie has several other sub themes which segue with the Wachowskis other works. I guess he missed those too. NuSoardGraphite
Or didn't find them compelling. Which sub-theme spoke to you? This is possible but didnt seem to be the case in the article which seemed to be simply about how the individual elements of the movie didnt make any sense. And pretty much all of the sub themes spoke to me since i am into thenconspiracy theories the themes were drawn from and am into spirituality as well, so i have been following the Wachowskis work since The Matrix.
