X-Men as a campaign

Inspired by the Avengers as a campaign thread, it got me to wondering how the X-Men might work with the same analysis. For example, Professor X seems to be a GM-PC. Marvel Girl is the only female player, and all the boys playing have crushes on her.

That was Jean Grey in the Xmen. Cyclopes and Wolverine were hot for her. Eventually she rage quite the game though...

Beast is the guy who keeps changing his character each session.  The first one his complications are all about being a dumb brute, then the next one he's got all these science skills and talks like a professor, then he shows up furry one day.

Jean Grey started out as Marvel Girl in the original first X-Men lineup.

 

Angel is the player who doesn't really have much of a concept, just a picture.  He's just a guy with wings really, and he's all into role playing.  Eventually he gets sick of not having any powers and works up a really complicated radiation accident to turn into arcangel.

Iceman and Beast players are the kibbitzers who are usual not paying attention during the session.  Iceman didn't even pay attention during character gen although he later improves his power structures, he still doesn't pay attention or play efficiently, which makes his character an excellent option to be mind-controlled by villains as his performance is typically much lower than his power level.

Scott's player wanted to play Vampire, but was outvoted so he created a tragic backstory with uncontrolled powers so he can go goth emo as a super.

Rogue was most likely an NPC, as her powers would be FAR beyond the scope of what's possible with a starting character.

I think the GM's premise was for everyone to pick 1 of Superman's powers and make a character (or maybe it was Martian Manhunter instead?).

You joke but that's actually really close to what it ended up like.  It would actually make a pretty interesting campaign, especially if they could combine into a super being once in a while, but struggled for control in that form.  "You're all superman, in parts."

That also seemed to be the premise of the character's powers in John Byrne's Next Men as well.

Psylocke's player brought the character from another campaign, didn't like the game and left it mid-adventure.  GM gave character to a new power-gamer frat boy.  Tweaks powers and changes her to an asian bikini babe because it would be kewl.

It would be Martian Manhunter especially if you add Morph and Kitty Pryde

Collossus is the role player in the group who loves complex characters and is less interested in the powers than the personality.  The GM helped build him the character, but he prefers being in his unarmored form and role playing the forbidden love story with Kitty.

Actually, it would make more sense if the GM were a fan of Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes but didn't want to run a campaign set in the future were everyone could fly (legion flight rings).  The main characters that didn't get used as players became villains (Cosmic Boy -> Magneto, Chameleon Boy -> Mystyque, etc...).

I like this and the Avengers threads. I did a similar exercise when Watchmen came out. I would so play in these campaigns.

Nightcrawler's player must've suffered a lot of Total Party Kills (TPKs) somewhere along the way - he designed a character whose agility, speed, wall-crawling and teleporting practically guarantee no-one will land a hit on him!

Don't forget his stealth, he practically becomes invisible in darkness.

 

Kitty Pryde is played by the GM's kid sister who has a huge crush on the guy that plays Collossus.  She's always changing her costume and name and doesn't use her powers very effectively or spend experience.   One day she  reads the rules works with the GM to do an adventure with the Wolverine character in Japan, spending all those xps she's piled up.

And Wolverine is played by the 12 year old who takes the same character into all the campaigns and whines until he can be added to teams despite his murder hobo style of play and penchant for trying to hit on DNPCs or other PCs if they have red hair.
