It was suggested that maybe we create a thread for new people who are posting and especially for lurkers.

So here is what I would like to suggest everyone post as an introduction:

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?
  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?
  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?
  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

I hope this thread gets pinned.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

Just a joke based on the movie "Mystery Men"

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

D&D back in Junior High... maybe 1990?

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

The first game I ever GMed was a verbal-only storytelling game (no dice or paper) in a fantasy setting that my best friend and I called "Megaventure" when we were in the fifth or sixth grade. I DMed D&D 3.5 in Iraq during OIF 3 and have had semi-regular groups for D&D since then with a friend who's also a veteran and his kids and their friends (mid 20's, most of them).

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

I'm home brewing a Fantasy Hero setting which I'm at least currently thinking of "Hero Legends" With a home brew framework for granting powers depending on the individuals' "Legendary Accomplishments". Basically in this world public opinion has for the last ten or so years had the power to change reality. If you were Xerxes the great in my world, you'd be granted additional power from... well, the universe. If your actions have enough impact on reality, reality grants you magical power. I'm working on "Legendary Exp" as a second framework on top of standard exp which is only for the advancement of "Legendary Levels" which grant increasingly large fixed AP cap powers at a rate determined by a table that I'll admit isn''t yet complete.

- First RPG? Hard to say, played quite a few.

- First RPG I GMed? Champions. Still do GM it.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)? It was the name of a city for a fantasy race. I meant to type in the name of the race itself but I was exhausted. I should have stayed with my original handle of Nephilim.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played? D&D Basic.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed? AD&D 1st Edition.

What are you currently playing/GMing? Errr.....nothing.

Hello there!

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

It's the name of one of my characters on Champions Online - she's in my avatar as well.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

Dungeons and Dragons... Probably 3.5? I'm relatively new to the tabletop scene (at least, compared to some of you who seem to have been at this much longer than me!)

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

None yet... But I'm in the process of setting up my first game - of Champions! I'm really looking forward to it.  I've never done this before, but it should be a lot of fun.

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

See above.

I'm totally here because of the Champions Online MMO - when I learned it was based off a tabletop RPG I took it upon myself to track down the books - ended up with a pile of 6E books and an urge to start a campaign. Still in the planning stages, but I hope to start by early November.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?  It's just the first syllable of my last name.  It's been used as a nickname for years.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?  Champions, when I was in college.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?  I ran a few sessions of Champions many years ago.

What are you currently playing/GMing?  Nothing, unfortunately.

As this is your first post I want to give you a special welcome.

I never played Champions Online MMO.  And I am glad you took the time to track the books down and come and join us.  I would highly recommend looking at the Champions sub-forum for any ideas/advice on running Champions.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

It's the name of a AD&D2 character I played in high school. It's either Quenya or Sindarin (from Tolkien). The root words are 'hae' (far, distant) and 'randir' (wanderer/ranger). Seemed like a good name for a half-elf adventurer at the time. I've been using it as my primary online handle since I used it for my first MUD character in 1993. Except in LotRO, because the devs swiped my name for an NPC.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

D&D Basic set (Red box).

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

Shadowrun 2ed.

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

The Iron Kingdoms campaign I've been in for the last year or so is on hiatus, so we're about to start a Star Hero campaign as a fill-in.

Hello, I am Tasha

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

Tasha is the name of one of my first 3rd Edition D&D characters. The name Natasha Greenbottle was pulled out of the Character Generator's Random Name Generator. Tasha just became my online personna/avatar.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?
That would be Original Blue Book Basic Dungeons and Dragons, with Original D&D mixed in.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

That would also be Original Blue Book Basic D&D.

What are you currently playing/GMing?

Currently playing Pathfinder. Contemplating running either The Strange, Lords of Gossimer and Shadow, or Amber (or a mashup of LoGS and Amber). Nothing is set in stone yet. Just need some inspiration.

When did you start to play Hero?
I started with the 2nd edition rulebook (AKA the Revised edition Champions boxed set). I didn't become a die hard fan until Fantasy Hero 1st edition came out and showed me how empowering it was to have complete control of your character's build. Danger Incorporated (now called Dark Champions), was my introduction to modern era RPGs. Justice Inc was a fun take on the pulp genre.

I am a fan of ease of use. Simplicity is important, but can actually make things harder. Ease of use trumps that.

The name Bigdamnhero comes from Firefly. (Y'all probably guessed that.)

First RPG I played was Original D&D back in 1976 (Junior High).

I can't remember if I started GMing with OD&D or just after AD&D came out?

I discovered Hero with 1st Edition Fantasy Hero in 1985 and never looked back. Ironically, I mostly played heroic genres for years, and didn't really get into Champions itself until about 10 years ago.

I run Hero almost exclusively; currently wrapping up a Champions game adapted from Savage World's Necessary Evil setting; probably going to run low-fantasy next. I play in a Star Wars Edge Of Empire game. I also run a lot of convention games, almost all with Hero in a wide variety of genres.

Not new but I do lurk a lot  :)

The name came from a game of Star Wars trivia in a chat room...I joked about being the "All Knowing, All Powerful, Jedi Master of Oz...Shortened to JmOz...kind of been my online handle for 20+ years now

First game was Basic (Red box) D&D

Same with first game I ran

Right now running a Savage Worlds Slipstream campaign and trying to get a friend to run 5th edition Shadowrun

Been playing Champions sense the 4th edition

Like JmOz, I am not new but I am not a prolific poster.

My name has been a long running evolution, we used badge names in our local Glasgow convention and had fun trying to put clues in the names to who we were - my friends then tried to work out who was which badge name.  I was playing with my academic qualification and my current place of work to create a new badge name.  PhD and House of Commons comes to Doc Democracy.  :-)  I liked it and stuck with it - kinda Golden Age-y.

My first game was Original D&D from the books, Blackmoor etc.  Club at my local secondary school ran it and it quickly changed to AD&D when that came out in the UK in 1978 (??).

Obviously I first ran a few dungeons using AD&D but the first game I ran for any extended kind of game was RuneQuest 2 - we loved it and played it for years.  The first HERO stuff was the Champions box set (old grey book, cool street map, terribly typesetting!) :-)

Currently I have a close group of friends who mix and match games.  In the past year we have played TORG, Traveller, 13th Age, Harnmaster, Trail of Cthulhu, a couple of FATE based games and a HERO based mash-up of our favourite characters and settings (from the above games and settings and more) in a massive birthday weekend session.  We also do an hour a week playing D&D 3.5 on Roll20 with folk who cannot get to the face to face anymore.

Sounds like I play more than I do - we aim for fortnightly sessions and often fall back to boardgames when numbers are low.  Most games are two or three sessions then we move game, setting and GM...  :-)

Not knew, been around through two or three different incarnations of the Hero Games boards, and at least two changes in company ownership (Original Heroes -> Cybergames -> DOJ).

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?  It's my name.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?  AD&D 1e.

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?  Also AD&D 1e.

What are you currently playing/GMing?  Sadly, nothing.

When did you start playing HERO?  A friend had been a Champions player for a while already.  I picked up the 3rd edition Champions book in the summer of 1985, and that was it.  (After having previously picked up Autoduel Champions for the Car Wars parts...)

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

Using ones initials is pretty common as a Unix system login.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

That would be Germany's "Dark Eye" RPG, back in the late 80s. I got it

from my local church's library. So I guess the Pope made me do it.

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

The very same game. Nobody knew about RPGs at all and someone had to run it,

while we were passing time at your mom's single parent support group.

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

It's back to the roots, as I'm using a Fuzionized HERO to run an old "Dark Eye"

adventure series. Also, maybe I'm doing something more light D&D-ish pretty soon.

And a sci-fi PbP is just getting started, let's see if that survives the first month.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

I used to play the Age of Empires online with friends of mine back in '97 and I would routinely play the Babylonians and use Priests to great effect.  Psillias was a name I came up with that sounded Babylonian (at least in my mind).  The best part is that it had a double meaning: the P is silent so it actually sounds out as "silly-ass". :)

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

Basic boxed set of Dungeons & Dragons circa '80ish

  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.  We had a neighborhood group that played pretty regularly and we all took turns GMing.

  • What are you currently playing/GMing?

Currently playing Champions but getting ready to take over for the existing GM and run a Gamma World game utilizing the Hero system.

I've been around (mostly lurking) since the start of the boards but I figured I would chime in anyway.

  • How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?  I was given the nickname Deadly as a play on my last name back in 3rd grade.  Years (and several nearly disastrous accidents) later, one of my friends said "You're not so much Deadly as you should be a Deadman".  Everyone still calls me Deadly but I hold to truth in my friend's words.
  • What was the first tabletop RPG you played?  AD&D back in 1980 when I was in 8th grade.
  • What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?  AD&D a few months after I started playing.
  • What are you currently playing/GMing?  I am playing in a Champions 6e game online using MapTool and Google Hangouts, running another Champions 6e game using the same medium and have a semi-regular monthly 5e Urban Fantasy Face to Face game.
  • When did you start to play Hero?  I picked up the 1st Edition Champions Book back in the Summer of 1981 and have been playing ever since.

How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)?

It was the name of the first character (inspired by Freakazoid! and Shazam/Captain Marvel) that I built using 5e that inspired me to post to this forum asking questions.

What was the first tabletop RPG you played?

AD&D1e

What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed?

Amber Diceless (and it did not go well).

What are you currently playing/GMing?

Nothing. Unless you count the ocasional meta-game of HERO character creation.

When did you start to play Hero?

84 While still in high school.  Started with Champions 1e/2e.  Got to participate in a nearly weekly game every Saturday that would often go from 2pm to 2am that lasted over 2 years. Haven't really looked back.  I have purchased only a handful of non-HERO books since then (Amber Diceless, Larry Nivens Ringworld, Dreampark and DCHeroes) with Amber being the only other really long term (multi-year campaign) that I've had the pleasure to participate in.
