Cooper Mason, Lifedrinker

Hello. Presented for your entertainment and use is a vampire based loosely on Dio Brando from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Not Dio's Stand User version from the Stardust Crusaders storyline, but his original version from the first storyline, Phantom Blood. I kinda also added some "Pillar Men" to him. And a heck of a lot of musical references (his name alone is based on Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson). Enjoy, and feel free to adjust him for your campaign. (I might of made him TOO over powerful, considering that I don't have a campaign, I just like to create villains and such).

Background/History: Cooper Mason stood naked upon the deck of a ship on a 'dead' lake in the United States, at sun fall. All men were drained of all life, except one, who was withering away wrapped in pieces of Cooper's own skin, still semi-attached to himself. "Ah, since you are the one who awakened me from my slumber, I shall recite my story for you. You see, I wasn't always the god you see before you. I was born from the seed of Allen Cooper and his twin sister Alice. My parents were the sort who would do anything for the experience of doing something. For appearances sake, he took in and married a young woman named Marilyn. When I was twelve, he spotted a young aristocrat named Joseph Harmon and his young wife Elian. Wishing to marry young Elian, he had to take care of her husband and make his death look like an accident. Quite easy to do when it was 1860.

But, of course, there was a matter with my so called mother Marilyn. She had an 'accident' off a cliff face. So, my father started courting Elian, now a young widow being courted by a widower. After a year, they were wed, and I met my new family, along with her accursed brat Jonathan. My father covered the Harmon riches, so planed to have the newlywed woman and her son met the same fate as his old wife. Since this would destroy my own plans, I stepped in and off the cliff my father went to save my new mother and her son.

Years pasted, and my father only left me debits and an old stone dragon mask from China. I made nice with Jonathan and started to poison Elian. Jonathan was much smarter than I realized, and uncovered my plans. Confronting me as I was about to give his mother the fatal amount, we fought. I grabbed a knife and put on the mask, Soon, blood was spilled upon the mask...my own. As I lay dying for the first time, the mask came alive and revived me. My first thought was to quench my hunger, and pore Elian was an easy grab. Jonathan Harmon swore vengeance upon me, but since I was full, and he was only human, I left him alive, breaking the mask to a million pieces on the way out.

Perhaps I shouldn't of left Jonathan Harmon still breath, but I had better things to do, like get the entire city to worship me as the god I so truly am. Between my first encounter and the second to last encounter, Jonathan learned some sort of martial art developed by those who watched dragons. We eventfully fought again, I killed many of the hunters who came after me, but Jonathan stork me hard and brought me low, even going so far as to chop up my body and taking it from England to America to put the pieces into a box and dump it into a lake. Where I stayed, reknit my body, and feed upon the life-forces of fish till you and your ship raised me from the depths. And I thank you, but letting you be the last one alive upon the ship. Now that my tail is over, so is your life." And with that, the pieces of skin wrap tighter upon the man's body, turning him into a tube of toothpaste which has squeezed out all it's contents.

Personality/Motivation: Cooper was always convinced that he was superior to others. Once unlife hit him, he convinced himself that he is a god. And that is, for all intense and purposes, how he spends his unlife. He does what he pleases to the humans he encounters, and lives how he pleases, cause who can blame a god for what happens to other men?

He does have some failings. Like his being prone to kill outright those who clamed he is simply another vampire, or even have a gal to say he is not a god at all. And, anyone who defies him and lives becomes a subject of his 'holy' wrath. He is secretly afraid of the descendants of Jonathan Harmon (which includes James Harmon the 4th, better known as Defender, even if Cooper doesn't know it just yet...). Only Jonathan came close to ending his existence so far, and this, his descendants bare watching, or even extermination in order to get his revenge upon Jonathan.

Cooper has an annoying habit of referring to himself in the third person. He knows that he owes his powers and existence to a strange dragon cult from China and the dragon they worship. He doesn't yet know that the cult is still alive and keeping an eye on him. He cares not for the group itself (the Cult Of The Red Banner), nor it's dragon god (The Death Dragon). The Death Dragon is quite aware of Cooper, but lets him exist for now (as with Cooper around, he is able to reap the benefits of chaos he pores upon the world).

Quotes: "You thought it was Doctor Destroyer, but it was actually I, Cooper Mason, who would be your downfall."

"All hail me, Cooper Mason, as your god."

"Bow before Cooper Mason, and I might let you serve me."

"You have only yourself to blame for the tragedy that Cooper Mason will now inflict upon you."

"Mortal laws have no meaning to Cooper Mason."

Powers/Tactics: Cooper has a heck of a lot of powers. Being a semi-vampire type character (a "Lifedrinker"), he is able to drain the life energy of others. Mostly, he can do this by grabbing the pore victim and then simply maintaining the hold and surround his grabing arm with a purple aura as the victim's life energies simply drain away. He doesn't actually gain anything by doing this, except for simply feeding his hunger. Unlike 'normal' vampires, he doesn't drink blood (well, he CAN, but he doesn't need to, as a simple grab will do). His most powerful attack of this sort is his lifedrinking aura. By simply standing there, and glowing purple, everyone in an 8 meter radius of him and is considered to have a life-force can be drained of there energies.

As an undead being, he is resistant to various forms of damage, can survive in almost any environment, and can regenerate over time, even to the point of coming back to 'unlife' after being seemly destroyed.

Because his origins are not typical for a vampire, he is not affected by most limitations lesser vampire's have. He is not obsessed with counting. Running water means nothing to him. Pounding his heart with a wooden stake only causes damage to him, and not preventing him to move. He has a reflection. Holy water simply gets him wet. He can enter any building, even without being invited. The only thing he has which is the same with a 'normal' vampire is that sunlight burns him. But he does have one vulnerability normal vampires do not have. Because he is a being of 'negative ki', attacks made with 'positive ki' hurt him more than normal.

As a being of negative ki, he can manipulate and project this ki to many effects. He can shoot beams of negative ki out of his eyes. Combined with his complete control of his undead body, he can dislodge his eyes to shoot above normal barriers. He can pore negative ki into his breath and form a cloud full of sharp blue crystals. And anyone who is scratched by the cloud can be controlled by him. He can bring negative ki to his skin, causing his body tempter to be so hot that it hurts people touching him. And by doing the same thing, but concentrating on light as oppose to heat, he can cause his body to glow brightly for a few seconds, blinding all who look at him.

He also has complete control of his own body. This allows him to easily cut through almost any object (or person), using almost any part of his body. He can easily pull down folds of skin or even dislodge his now empty veins and arteries to use as extra arms and legs (his regeneration ability keeps him from suffering to much harm). He can even fashion glider wings from the very flesh off his back for himself.

Combat wise, he likes to violently kill a normal for his first post 12, then wait for two turns to see what the opponents can do. If he suffers harm at this time, he will take action to strike out at the person who harmed him (as who dairies harm a god). If after the two turns are up, he will decided if the combat bores him (which then he will leave), or if the opponents possess enough power to be a threat to him.

Campaign Use: Cooper Mason is an example of the 'superhero horror' villain. Someone who the heroes can't be counted on to stop from killing as many normal as the GM allows him to. Shure, he has vulnerabilities, but not as many as you would think. And even if you get him down, keeping him there is another story. Because of this, he is not exactly a good fit in any campaign.

He needs not be more powerful. To lessen his power, you might want to reduce his drain abilities some, remove some of his "Dark Ki Projection" powers, reduce or even eliminate Cuts Like A Knife, and reduce his protection powers (Like A Rock, and others) to a lesser level. He is perfect guy for campaign modification, depending on what your view of vampires are in your campaign, if you use the Cult of the Red Banner or not, ect, ect, ect...

Hunting: Cooper freely hunts anyone from the Harmon family (as he fears that only they have the power to remove him from unlife). Beyond that, insult him enough or defile him long enough, and he will hunt you. His way of hunting is direct (Attack with power and predigest). If something about the character makes direct combat risky for Mason, he will fall back to destroying the love ones or whoever or whatever the hero cares about. But first and foremost, he would attack directly if at all possible. Besides, gods do not do anything which would not bring joy to there followers (ya, shure, right...)

Appearance: Cooper Mason, as he appears now, if a pale skinned man, with deep black eyes, long black hair, and unbelievably tall (made worse by his stretching ability). He usably doesn't wear any clothing (and, keeping with the spirit of the Comic Code Authority, is covered by such deep shadows around his nether region that it is imposable to tell what religion he was when alive). When he does wear clothing, it is usually something of a silver color, and allows him to take folds of his skin from his arms, legs, and torso without any problems. When he creates his extra limbs, they are strips of flesh from usually his arms and legs (and sometimes his no longer in use large blood vesicles).

If someone uncovered a painting of Cooper from the Victorian era, one can see that he was, when he was alive, quite handsome, and quite a normal hight. But his weird undeath has twisted him body and soul.

Dio Brando? Powerful? Even before he got his Stand in storyline 3 he was powerful. He has complete control over his own body. He can freeze people who touch him by drawing away moisture from his own body. Plus he is a vampire (blood drinking kind, not my lifeforce drinker). In storyline 3, he gains his Srand, The World, which allows him to stop time. So, we have a vampire who daylight will never reach him.

Well, to tell the truth, the Pillar Men are more powerful than Dio, but they don't last long. Santaviro, Eisedece, Whamu, and their leader Kars (who gains true immortality, then regrets it in his ultimate fate of 'I have no mouth but I must scream'. Their is something to be said about being to powerful.)

  • 2 weeks later...

To be honest the 40 Dex, 40 Int and 40 Ego are excessive. I would drop the Dex by at least a point and the Ego as well.

Well, yes...it is excessive. But I am of the belief that this character needs those stats to be a scary master villain who is able to fight multiple superheroes at once. Besides, I have no ideal about your campaign (or the campaign of anyone else), so feel free to modifie this character till it makes sense AND fills the same role for your campaign. Besides, who doesn't do tinkering of villains before use? (besides new GMs, that is...)

Don't get me wrong, it is nice to get some build advice from others. For example, I'm not exactly shure I wrote up Cuts Like A Knife correctly (is only one Verible Emition Point needed to be able to have him cut people with any body part?). So, some advice is welcomed. But remember, your always free to mod this guy to fit your campaign. In fact, your encouraged to do so.

Cooper Mason's designer notes.

Stats: In STR, I wanted to duplicate Dio Brando's feat of using a semi as a weapon against Jotaru. So, I gave him 60 STR. I made the other stats a 40 because of his 'superiority' and that he is a vampire. Of course, the INT has been questioned by Death Tribble, and I am in the proses of reviewing it.

The Drains: Basically, I did not want to make Cooper a blood drinker, so I simulated it with the drains. The first three, he has to grab his victim to drain, but the last one is a 'make it dangerous to stand by him' attack. Update: Just thought up a musical reference...the band Vampire Weekend. No, I don't think I herd any of there songs...

Exie Eyes and Exie Eyes Without A Face: Based on the beams of energy Dio Brando can shoot from his eyes (in both Jojo storyline 1 and his video game appearances). I did the second attack with Indirect to make it not quite the same as Dio's. The names comes from the songs Sexy Eyes and Eyes Without A Face.

Cold As Ice and Crystal Blue Persuasion: Both attacks are different, but both are interconnected. Cold As Ice was based loosely on Dio's Ice Entangle Damage Shield attack, but since I was going to give Cooper another Damage Shield attack, I decided not to go that route. Instead, I decided to have the ice attack do straight damage, then add a mind control effect which Cooper can activate as long as the ice crystal fragment stays in the victim's system. Based on the songs Cold As Ice and Crystal Blue Persuasion.

Hotblooded: This power is based on one of the Pillar Men powers. Eiseedesee ("AC/DC" for those who don't speak 'hide the musical reference so we don't get sued') can superheat his own 'vampire above vampires' blood to burning levels. I decided to basically give his a damage shield. And this is the reason why I didn't give Cooper an Entangle Damage Shield with Personal Immunity (besides, he needed more ranged attacks than melee attacks, especially considering Cuts Like A Knife...). Name is based on the song by the same name ("I'm Hotblooded, Check It And See, I Got A Fever Of 103, Come on Baby, You Can Do More Than That, I'm Hotblooded, I'm Hotblooded")

Blinded By The Light: This is an original power (considering it is not based on what Dio or a Pillar Man can do). It operates on the same principal as Hotblooded, but light than heat. Name based on the song.

Cuts Like A Knife: Also Smashes Like A Mace, Pierces Like  A Spear, etc., etc., etc.... Basically your 'average' use your great strength to destroy power. Makes great use of Variable Advantage, Variable Special Effects (anything physical), and Alterable Origin Point (so that he could use all parts of his body). Name comes from the Bryon Addams song "Cuts Like A Knife".

Like A Rock: Lots of basic protection powers under that umbrella name. Name based on the song by the same name. His Damage Negation has the special effect of 'instant regeneration', but I couldn't think up a song to explain that, so Like A Rock it is.

Roundabout: I couldn't resist naming this attack after the Yes song which is the closing theme to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Basically, he 'catches' the attack with his body, then slings it back. Important note: he takes damage from the attack if he does this. There are two sub-names, "Return To Sender" (when he returns the attack to the one who launched it), and "Kentucky Rain" (when he sends it to anyone else). Both sub-names are based on Elvis songs.

Curricles Of The Mind: I believe I misspelled it. Originally, it was suppose to be Veteran Of The Psychic Wars, but I was unsure how to spell it. Anyways, it is protection from mental powers.

Man Behind The Mask: The only Alice Cooper song I know which I could use for him. It basically refers to the fact that he will regenerate, even from the dead, unless the heroes do something extreme, and the GM decides to never use him again (and also gives the GM a way out if he decides to change his mind). Perhaps the most interesting way to render his immortality mute is my favorite, somehow getting The Dragon to negate what he did to Cooper via the Stone Dragon Mask. It involves lots of roleplaying and an extreme amount of luck.

I Will Survive: I know, the Gloria Ganer song, but what song title describes Life Support any better?

Bits And Pieces: An old song, but what else can describe using bits of skin and/or blood vessels as extra arms?

Abra Abrakadabra: Again, old song, but what song can explain being able to thin out and stretch (especially with the line "I Want To Reach Out And Grab Ya")? (See Bits And Pieces for explanation how)

Bat Out Of Hell: The Meatloaf song/albums title. Perfectly describes using the skin on his back as glider wings (see Bits And Pieces for explanation how).

Might As Well Jump: The Van Halen song. What else would you use to describe jumping ability?

Run Like The Wind: I know, it is suppose to be Ride Like The Wind, but I misremembered the name of the song...

Run Like Hell: Pink Floid song. Basically it is running so fast that Cooper appears to teleport. This Is Not Real Teleportation!

Peekaboo!: I don't remember who sung the song (Devo?) but it basically describes his ability to see life energy quite well.

I Can See For Miles And Miles: A rather new power, I decided to extend his range of sight to goodly ranges. For an explanation, see Bits And Pieces, Exie Eyes, and Exie Eyes Without A Face.

Privet Eyes: Another recent addition power, it simply increases his PRE Roll by +4 (which makes up for his reduced INT). Viva Hall and Oats.

More or less correct, Major Tom. Ir 'helps' that Cooper doesn't like to expose himself to any strong light (I'm going for the Dio Brando from Stardust Crusaders effect of keeping him hidden in shadows and darkness till the final part of that story...the 'nudity' is based on the fact that he needs no clothing, and views himself a god, and the deep shadows... a comment on the CCA, and sometimes by using deep shadows, artist worked around the CCA.)

Edit: Did what Death Tribble asked about Cooper's INT, modified his INT skills (yes, he has some), re-did "Cuts Like A Knife" to include Variable Special Effects, and reduced it to +3d6. AND removed one option from Variable Advantages (Affects Desolified just didn't make sense in a power based on physical effects). He became a bit more expensive, but basically unchanged.

EDIT: modified his DEX, EGO, OCV, DCV, OMCV, DMCV downwards, and upped Vampire Weekending upwards, added Variable Effect to the first slot, got rid of slot two and three (as they were folded into slot 1), and upped what was slot 4 to 5d6. And I modified the rolls of the skills realigning on DEX and EGO (except Contortion, as the special effect of it is basically the body length change of Stretching). I'll probably do one more modification before I am satisfied that the character can be used "as is" (upping his Dark Ki Projections multipower). But that is...something I have to talk to you, the viewer of this post about. How much of an active point should a master villain have without being to ugly?

Cooper Mason Fact Check Charts.

Skill Required: System Operations (and an internet computer, and time to do some search-fu).

No Roll: There are a few people named Cooper Mason out there, but none of them are likely to be the one your searching for.

Roll: There are records of one Cooper Mason who was born around the 1850's in London England to one Allen Cooper. There is no noting who the mother was. There is no death certificate for this Cooper Mason.

Roll -1: Alien Cooper later married one woman named Marylyn Cooper (maiden name unknown), and after her death one Ellen Harman. Shortly after he married Ellen, Alien was killed falling off a cliff.  Oddly enough, that was the same fate as Marylyn. Ellen raised Cooper alongside her own son, Jonathan, it seems.

Roll -2: It is rumored that Cooper's birth mother may be Alice, his father's twin sister, as his birth certificate was clearly six mouths before Allen's marriage license.

Roll -4: There is some evidence that Cooper killed his own father to protect his stepmother and stepbrother.

Roll -8: There is some evidence that Allen might of had some ties with a sinister Asian cult. Exactly which one is unknown.

Roll -10: This is defiantly the undead being your looking for.

No Roll: Nothing, except for what a normal "Vampire" search would reveal.

Roll: "Lifedrinkers" is a name of a breed of vampire which feeds directly on the life-forces of there victim. None of the victims are drained of blood, but instead have purple hand marks upon there body, or other purple marks.

Roll -1: Lifedrinkers tend to have various powers. The only thing that links them are the method of feeding without taking blood.

Roll -2: Lifedrinkers don't tend to have the same limitations as other vampires.

Roll -4: The only limitations shared by Lifedrinkers and other vampires are being harmed by sunlight. All Lifedrinkers are harmed by exposer to attacked laced with something called "positive ki" or "positive life energy".

Roll -8: Lifedrinkers are thought to be related to the Chinese Hopping Vampire. Unlike other vampires, Lifedrinkers rarely spawn (and it is assumed that when they do, it is more or less an accident than on purpose).

Roll -10: Lifedrinkers are linked to the Death Dragon, and the cults associated with him. Some sort of stone mask is thought to be the key to transforming the living into a Lifedrinker. (Cooper Mason is defiantly a Lifedrinker).

Cooper Mason Superhero World Fact Check.

Skills: KS: The Superhero World

No Roll: Nothing, except what is currently known as public knowledge in your campaign.

Roll -10: Defender (James Harmon the 4th) is a descendent of Jonathan Harmon. That would make Cooper his step great granduncle or such. Note: This Roll is only possible if the heroes have some personal knowledge that Defender and James are the same person. If there is no link, do not give them this fact!
