Things Starship Captains Should Do Before Allowing Shore Leave On Alien Worlds...

1) Make sure the locals, and their government(s) in particular, are strong believers in concepts such as rule of law, innocent until proven guilty, trial by jury, and do not have such crazy laws on their books that a member of your crew might end up on death row just for picking his nose in public or jaywalking.

2) For the love of the Q Continuum, make sure your first officer will be responsible and not bring back some exotic form of VD...AGAIN!

Be sure to have all crewmen properly innoculated against any and all diseases.

Make sure your landing party knows the local laws and customs.

Pick a security team that is able to fight and is adequately armed against any possible threat.

If you must bring your dog to the planet, make sure it goes potty before beaming down.

  1. Ensure that the alien world has something worth stopping for, as all stops on alien worlds entail risks.

Ensure that the alien world has nothing that would prevent the ship's departure ... in orbit, on a nearby satellite/moon, or on shore.

Ensure that constant contact can be maintained between those on shore and those remaining on board the ship.

Ensure that adequate security remains on board the ship and that all points of ingress/egress on the ship are properly monitored and secured/protected.

Ensure that good internal security protocols are in place regarding those who will return from the alien world's surface ... and the things they bring with them (knowingly or not) ... to prevent viruses/infections/diseases, alien imposters, alien impregnation, stow-aways, hitch hikers, and the like.

Ensure that good external security protocols are in place regarding the exterior of the ship ... to prevent hull breaches, hitch hikers, minocs chewing on the power cables, and the like both during and after shore leave.

Question: Is this limited to Star Trek?

If "Question"==1:

Remind them to leave any red colored apparel, especially shirts, in their bunks.

Make sure that they have adequate amounts of currency to cover moderate expenses like food, drinks, tourist attractions, etc. Remind them that in any commerce driven society their will be swindlers.

If not an established "safe" tourist world like Risa, assign personnel to buddy teams.

If "Question"==0:

Depends on the setting. A more Firefly setting might be as simple as "mind your P's and Q's."

A Battlestar Galactica style game would imply no populated tourism worlds so shore leave would just be something to get out of the cramped quarters of the ship. Take your weapon with you.

Star Wars-ish? Avoid the Hutts, beware of men with the "deathmark" on five systems, and never, ever cut a deal with a Jedi.

  • 4 weeks later...

Xavier I hate to link to the life sink that is TV tropes

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AccidentalMarriage

but there are soooo many things you could be referencing (I'm guessing "Our Mrs Reynolds"

It's quotes at the top of the trope page, and it's also the very first example in the Live Action TV folder. :snicker:

Don't let this happen to your Captain!
