DC Movies- if at first you don't succeed...

Yeah Cyborg, just plain Cyborg was a Teen Titan, and I liked the character, but I liked Steel a lot too.  They rewrote Cyborg's story to be all about motherbox and Apocalips so it fits well with the movie idea (I'm sure he'll gain his superpowers in the film just like Justice League: War animated movie (from the Justice League: Origin comic -- almost certainly will be the film's basis as well).

I'm pretty sure the Shaq movie deep-sixed any chance of Steel ever being part of the DCEU.

That said, I can see the suits thinking that maybe a Superman-themed Iron Man knockoff wouldn't be sufficiently distinctive on a team that has at least two other people wearing high-tech armor and Superman himself returning as a major plot point. Cyborg has a backstory and power set that stands out a bit more from his peers.

Probably, but DC has got to get past the "oops we made a crappy version of this character so we cannot ever use him again" syndrome.  Marvel stumbled over and over with attempts until they got it right.

actually, since 52 and Rebirth, I have seen John a lot. He is involved with Lana Lang (who has been Superwoman until recently). He has a niece who wears a similar armor to him. He has also gotten to be one of the goto scientists where supers are involved. Superman involved him anytime he needed scientific help a lot.

I think the reason that Cyborg has been chosen as the "black" Justice League member in both comics and movies is that he is an original black character as opposed to a spinoff of a white character like Steel (spun off from Superman and, at least last time I looked, wears the "S") or the John Stewart Green Lantern.

My guess is that DC is using the current Justice League lineup for their film like Marvel uses only their "ultimate" line for their movies.  I prefer the classic Grant Morrison "pantheon" reboot in the 80s but that could just be because I was younger then.  And I usually don't like Grant Morrison's work.

But is Cyborg in the (comics) JL because Iron Man was a hit in theaters in 2008, or because he was a member of the Teen Titans since the '80s and was bound for membership in the JL at some point anyway? The logic being offered is that a Marvel movie success prompted a DC comics editorial decision, which in turn led to a DC movie production not-so-indirectly riding the coat-tails of that Marvel success from nine years ago.

I mean, I suppose you could say that any superhero movie today is riding the coat-tails of Marvel's success (which started with Iron Man in 2008), but isolating this one character is getting awfully specific.

Yeah its just a supposition on my part, based on chasing market trends, etc.  THey might have just liked him better because like rjcurrie says he's more distinct and solo rather than a kind of knockoff.
