Selective Growth

Kuleneko

Recommended Posts

I've seen plenty of shows like Popeye, One Piece and Generator Rex where a character makes their fist/foot/whatever giant, while leaving the rest of their body normal. I don't know how often something like that would be needed/crop up (if ever) but for the sake of argument, would  that be a limitation? An advantage? How would something like that be built?

The real question is, what does the character DO with the giant sized whatever?

If it's a case of cartoon hero's fist grows gigantic while he is winding up for a spectacular fight ending punch, it may just be part of the "special effects" of a Haymaker maneuver, not something to spend points on just something to put in the visual description of what the character is doing.

If your legs grow long and you run and jump better, get Running and Leaping with a Limitation, maybe with Perceivable (people can see the long legs.) If your eyes or ears get bigger and you gain a bonus to Perception, buy Enhanced Senses, again perhaps with Perceivable. Again, for a cartoon type character, these might just be "special effects" of moving to Noncombat Movement or of taking extra time for a Perception bonus.

But if you just want to be able to inflate various parts of your body, I think you should look into Stretching.

If various body parts change size but the character gains no benefit but people start looking and remarking on the freak, you have a Complication: Distinctive Features. If no one even notices, you just have a note on the character sheet.

I'll give you one guess as to what The Fornicator does with his...

(Total: 8 Active Cost, 1 Real Cost)

Stretching 0m, x3 body dimension (8 Active Points); Very Limited Body Part (-1), Side Effects, Side Effect occurs automatically whenever Power is used (INT Drain; -1/2), Cannot Do Damage (Unless you're doing it wrong; -1/2), Costs END To Maintain (Full END Cost; -1/2), Limited Power Refractory Period, must wait between activations (-1/2), Variable Limitations (requires -1 worth of Limitations; Some combination of; Gestures, Extra Time, Concentration, No Conscious Control, Charm Skill Roll (by appropriate other person) or Conditional (appropriate stimuli) etc; -1/2), no Noncombat Stretching (-1/4), No Velocity Damage (-1/4), Restrainable (Turn it off by turning him off; -1/4), Always Direct (-1/4) (Real Cost: 1)

As I said, depends on what you're doing with it.

Lucius what about the linked sticky entangle? Or side effect splatter?

<I can't believe I went there>

Yes, I left the most horrifying of Side Effects out, although I wrote them into what we may call the counterpart power....

Summon 8 1-point creatures, Inherent (+1/4), Persistent (+1/4) (24 Active Points); Extra Time (9 Months, -6), No Conscious Control (-2), 32 Charges which Never Recover (-1 3/4), Requires A Roll in the Hay (6- roll; -1 3/4), Side Effects (Side Effect affects both character and potentially at least one other person; Frequent, Incompetent DNPC if successful; -1 1/4), Side Effects (9 Months of gradually increasing sickness and debility as the host of the Summoned being's most parasitic phase; -1), Side Effects (Roll 2d6, apply that many dice of attack to Summoner (Gradually, sadistically, over a matter of hours); -1), Antagonistic Violent (-3/4), Restrainable (Only by means other than Grabs and Entangles; -1/4), Required Multiple Users (Summoner and at least one appropriately equipped person) (2 people; -1/4)

we started the thread out with kid's cartoons like Popeye and seem to have wandered far from that....yet come full circle to talking about kids....

Hey, follow-up...

Can I ban myself for starting this thread?

It's not your fault at all. Your question was in fact an excellent opportunity to begin a discussion on the principles of building Hero powers, the idea of "Reasoning from Effect" tm and the importance of asking what a given ability actually DOES for the character possessing it.

It's all THIS GUY'S fault!

I'll give you one guess as to what The Fornicator does with his...

The palindromedary says I share some blame for perpetuating the derail, but blame games aside can we get back to trying to find out Kuleneko really needs and trying to actually help?

Kuleneko one thing to ask yourself is how easily can the character control changingbthe hugh hands and how often would that be a hinderence. I don't remeber that Generator Rex's hand couldn't be use in a tight area though that is a logical limitation. So I would go with -0 value. And I wouldn't nessescerly put it on the sheet. Just remind the player that if he tries to use this power in an air duct, either it won't work, or it does but the air duct will break.

Also speaking of Generator Rex, his hands could be defined as either missile deflection or force wall when he ducked behind his hand. Also he could buy entangle defined as grabbing one-handed. That could be the sfx to buy off the limitations that come when grabbing one-handed. CSLs for sweep maneuver too.

P.s. fwiw Im throwing out ideas in pre-6th ed terms.

Have you considered just making it linked to the normal body function? That would simply the entire build by a ton.

Rule 34:

If it exists, there is porn out of it. No exceptions.

Even if that is just Lucius level it-can-be-build-in-hero porn.

Back to serious discussions, this is the most important part. Always model the game effect first.

It is a common misconception (especially if you come from D&D rulesets) to look on how to use abilities/rules flaws to get extraordinary effects (weaponized cantrips). That does not work here. You can build almost any game effect, but you have to pay for it too.

In turn if you did not pay for it (and can't do it as normal, average human) you propably can't do it.

Uh....it IS a normal body function. For adult males.

Lucius Alexander

Exactly my point:

The basic function is something every adult male of our species can do. Kinda like Presence attack or Sight. For lack of better terms, it is a "everyman ability".

The character is only minor better at one aspect of it (asuming size maters).

All those limitations you put on it are inherent in the everyman ability. They have nothing to do with the selective growth ability you wrote down. The growth is simply linked to using the everyman ability.

I guess I need to explain the joke.

No, the write up is not supposed to represent something "better" than average, it is supposed to represent exactly average. I CAN see where the confusion arises in context, though, when I think about the drift of the thread and exactly when, where, and how I presented it.

It, and the other write up, are jokes. They would only be appropriate purchases in a very unusual sort of game, if anyone were ever to run the sort of game in which it might actually be something worth representing with a 1 pt Power to be a potent male or to be a fertile female. I originally built the first in a thread started by someone who was building an android character and wanted it to be "anatomically correct." Someone said "there is a Stretching joke to be made" and I said "I'm just the guy to make it" and I did.

Now can we please get back to figuring out what Kulenoko is actually trying to do (Which I'm sure this is NOT it) assuming he's still willing to talk to us?

Lucius Alexander

The palindromedary says this is what I get for being too ready to whip it out and put it on display.

I guess I need to explain the joke.

I get the joke. It is not that hard after all (despite the fact that it should be).

But your best joke can be turned into a serious discussion about game mechanics and builds:)

Therefore having this stretching just linked to "Having a hard time" would be so much easier.

I think Kuleneko already gave up on taking this thread seriously back in post Nr. 9. And you already did give him the "model by game effect, not special effect" advice.

"Having a Hard Time" would be a good name for the power build. What about its counterpart? Maybe "Calling the Stork?" Nah, that's for the birds. "The Parent Trap?" No that was the name of a movie wasn't it? How about "'Inconceivable!' 'You wish!'?"
