Do you ever wonder if one of your tax dollars goes towards the bullet that ends up killing an innocent civilian in a faraway land that you'll never meet?

Stability in that part of the world is a longterm goal, American can not afford to ignore.

The biggest danger is someone like Trump saying "Slash that" and the whole thing going downhill.

No, there's no doubt whatsoever that my tax dollars go to slaughter innocent civilians in foreign countries.  I try to vote accordingly.

Perhaps occupying their territory and killing their citizens is not the best way to accomplish this?

It is, if the alternative is worse.

Politics like Medicine is about finding "the kind of interference that will solve the issue, without creating too many follwup issues".

I mean the approach of just giving people weapons/money backfired regulary in the past. Saddam and Bin Laden are just two more obvious examples. So much it became a meme that "America is arming their future enemies today".

Meanwhile, the Republican Party, which controls all three branches of the U.S. federal government, has shut that government down.

But they're blaming the Democrats. As far as I can see, both parties are using this situation to try to score beneficial political points ahead of the next Congressional elections. In other words, they believe the purpose of public office is to take and hold power, not to govern.

To be fair, if the Republicans had Filibuster-proof majorities, the Shutdown would not have happened. The democrats have a certain amount of blame here.

To be even more fair, the Republicans and Democrats did govern and did find a compromise that would avoid shutdown. This is all Donald Trump's fault. As it was, as it ever will be.

To yet even more fair, Donal Trump doesn't really run his administration. He is slothful and ignorant, as capricious as he is easy to manipulate. This is the fault of his staff. Yes, he picked his staff, but again, he is easily manipulated, and those picks were largely establishment picks.

To be the most fair, there was ample evidence that Donald Trump was slothful and ignorant leading up to the election.  The American people (from the states that mattered) put him in office anyway.  This is all our fault.

I have the infinity stone of blame.

This is inaccurate. The CR only requires fifty Senate votes. It cannot be filibustered. The GOP is unable to put fifty votes together. Indeed, I believe four Democrats did vote to pass.

Trump certianly isn't helping. A shut down benefits no one... except the Tea Party. And Vladimir Putin. Hmmm.

Maybe it's time to pull out that old never used rule where 2/3rd the state legislatures can create an new Amendment...

my suggestion would be as long as a shut down goes on, Congressmen don't get paid either, nor may they take money from donors or special interests during that time.

Betcha we'd see some negotiations then

I can not blame the Democrats to use that little bit of Power they have to get the Dreamer thing sorted out.

They want something solved that the Republicans could hae solved anytime in the last year.

A shutdown didn't have to happen, but the Republicans don't want to make deals. It doesn't matter what they say, they're running things. They wanted to run their tax plan more than they wanted to fund the rest of the government. If they hadn't done that, they could have rammed a budget through first with reconciliation and then had to deal with their tax plan being delayed especially since the tax plan was so bad even people who benefited said what are you doing?

The only people who benefited were people who didn't need tax cuts but said they would quit donating if they didn't get them.

Trump's revolving mind and tiny twitter fingers aren't helping. The belief is Miller and Kelly are fighting against immigration reform which means they are counseling him to be a dumbass and he's like sure, I can do that.

The question is how many more people in the White House, or connected to Trump going to be indicted. His campaign manager, Manafort, and Manafort's partner are gearing up to fight charges of money laundering, Flynn signed a deal in the summer, and Bannon, McGahn, and Pubus all share the same lawyer and have been asked to explain things.

If Melania exercises her prenup over the payoff to the porn star Trump did, we might even see a divorce happen before Trump leaves office.

Faced with the likelihood of a “blue tsunami” in the 2018 midterm elections, President Donald Trump is holding out hope that terrorists will attack the country,

reported the Washington Post on Wednesday.

“In private conversations,” said the Post, “Trump has told advisers that he doesn’t think the 2018 election has to be as bad as others are predicting. He has referenced the 2002 midterms, when George W. Bush and Republicans fared better after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, these people said.”

Remember those times when the worst thing a President did was sleep with a Intern and then deny it?

Mere confirmation of what we have known all along.

Know? We have the Master Plan of the Terrorists. In writing.

People like Trump and the white Supremacists are the biggest allies of groups like ISIS.

Sen. Claire McCaskill has introduced a bill to solve this problem.  I expect it to get nowhere in a GOP-dominated Senate.

Thanks to the 27th amendment, it can't take effect until next congress even if it DID pass.

Lucius Alexander

The palindromedary explains that this amendment forbids congress from changing their own pay - for better OR worse - they can only change the pay of future congresses.

Just because it does not solve all problems now, is not a reason do finally get it done.

What is it with Americans and "perfect solution or not worth doing"?

I agree it's worth doing.

I' admit to being dubious about whether it will get done, given who it is who has to do it.

I can always count on a palindromedary, though, to give me tagline. Well, almost always.

Tammy Duckworth is not pulling her punches.

Quote

"Does he even know that there are service members who are in harm’s way right now, watching him, looking for their commander in chief to show leadership, rather than [trying] to deflect blame?” Duckworth said. “Or that his own Pentagon says that the short-term funding plans he seems intent on pushing is actually harmful to not just the military, but to our national security?”

“I spent my entire adult life looking out for the well-being, the training, the equipping of the troops for whom I was responsible,” she continued. “Sadly, this is something that the current occupant of the Oval Office does not seem to care to do — and I will not be lectured about what our military needs by a five-deferment draft dodger.”

“And I have a message for cadet bone spurs: If you cared about our military, you'd stop baiting Kim Jong Un into a war that could put 85,000 American troops, and millions of innocent civilians, in danger."

"Cadet bone spurs".
